April - 1938

(Vada would have been 15+ years old when she started staying with Ray and Eithel April 18, 1932. She talks about writing to Eithel and receiving letters from her throughout her Diary. It seems that her main beau was Kenneth Wilson, but she has been busy dating several boys in 1938. She hasn't met Gene yet. If anyone out there is reading this 1938 Diary of Vada's and runs across any names that she has mentioned or is related to any names she has written in her Diary, please contact me at Linda Wagner. 1, Friday - Heard Miss Perkins talk at 8 o'clock tonite. Worked from 7 to 12:30 on the luncheon for Miss Perkins. Set for 400 and only 120 were present. Worked at the store until pretty late. Ben and I went to the dance.

2, Saturday - Got my new patent pumps. Cleaned my room. Went to work at 12. had a very busy day. I am getting better, got a raise of $1 in addition to commission.

3, Sunday - Jadeena and Durward P., Leota and Durward Borden, Kenneth Wilson and I went to Beaver this morning at 9:00. Had a swell time. Got home about 10:30. Broke a date with Harrover.

4, Monday - Back to school and work. Plenty tired. Wrote to Eithel. Kenneth walked downtown with me. Got home from work at 6:30. Couldn't sleep Must be homesick, bad dreams, I guess???

5, Tuesday - Sorority meeting at 6;30. Didn't get home until 9 o'clock. Kenneth Brown and I were supposed to work on Rural Ed. problems. Too late. Don Wilton called.

6, Wednesday - Kenneth Wilson took me to work at noon. I think he is rather nice. It has turned off very cold this evening.

7, Thursday - Snowed all day, cold and the wind is strong. Rode to work and back with Mr. Bloom [Ploom?]. Got a letter from Eithel. Wish I could go home???

8, Friday - Gosh, but is terrible outside. A real blizzard. Roads and streets are blocked. Cut all my morning classes. Didn't go to work. Don Wilton called, wanting to go on fish fry.

9, Saturday - Went to work early today. Sun is shining. Snow is melting almost. Need a boat to get downtown. Roads are still blocked. Date with John Purier after work.

10, Sunday - Up early. What a day. Dinner at the Bell at 12:00. Initiated in AEA at 2:30. Buffet supper in AEA room at 6:00. The show at 9:00, Jane Withers in "Checkers" show, "good show". [Vada has written at top of page, in black ink, "Due today."]

11, Monday - AEA dinner at the Bell Hotel tonite. Didn't go. Went home from work about 7:30. Studied until 9:30, then to bed. Sick.

12, Tuesday - I'm playing the part in our play. No sorority meeting tonight. Went to bed pretty early.

13, Wednesday - What a grand day. acted like it might rain, but it didn't. Don W. and Burton Freize called wanting dates, But I had lovely plans already.

14, Thursday - Supposed to go to the show with Burton tonite, but dated John Purier instead. After last night I'm beginning to live anew [not sure if it is anew or over. I think it is anew.] for awhile.

15, Friday - Went to work early today. Have really been busy this week. Would like to go home but just can't do it. Am sending for pen guard. Kenneth Ray birthday, April 15, 1929.

16, Saturday - $1.00 [Not sure what she meant.]. Got a topper and hat over at Hiatts this morning. Went to work at 10 o'clock. Really busy all day. The biggest day this year. Around $600.

17, Sunday - What a long day. Went to Methodist Church. Date with Kenneth. We went to the Cantata at 8 o'clock. Afterwards, rode around.

18, Monday - [Anniversary of when Vada] Started staying with Ray and Eithel April 18, 1932. Back to work again. Play practice at 6:15. Decided to drop the whole thing. Elsie, Leota, Rosa lee and I went on picnic in the park. Lots of fun.

19, Tuesday - Sorority meeting. Louise and I went to the N.S.H.S play, "Tea Topper Tavern." Pretty good. Broke a date with Burten Freize.

20, Wednesday - Cleaned the sorority room after getting off work. Came home set Edna's hair. Studied until 12 o'clock. Got a letter from Eithel.

21, Thursday - Formal sorority party. Went with Kenneth W. Gee, but he's swell. Sent a pretty ,sweet, cute corsage of Sweetpeas. Had swell time.

22, Friday - Was pretty busy at the store. Went to bed pretty early tonite instead of going to the dance.

23, Saturday - Washed a few things. Cleaned my room. Went to work at 11:30. Erl Lene and I went walking after I got off work.

24, Sunday - Rained today. Lovely. Erl Lene and I messed around all afternoon. Went to church with Kenneth. Gee! But he's nice.

25, Monday - Rained a little again today. Don Wilton called wanting a date. "No!" Again. Set Evelyn's hair.

26, Tuesday - Leota Leeper's birthday, April 26, 1921. Sorority party out at Leepers. Leota's birthday. Had a swell time. Rained. Got stuck about 10 o'clock, didn't get out until 1:30. 5 cars of girls.

27, Wednesday - We're really having a wet spring . Rained again today. Got a letter from Eithel. date with James Crutchfield, to show.

28, Thursday - More work. Really busy. Have so much studying to do.

29, Friday - Studied again this evening. Working on notes. Chester Mairy [think that's what she wrote. Can't read writing here.] was drowned today in a lake down by Avard [that's Avard, Oklahoma].

30, Saturday - Cleaned my room . Went downtown early this morning. Went to work at 11:30. Worked until 12:30 midnight getting out statements.
