Osage Nation (Indian Territory) - Osage county, Oklahoma

May 4, 1876 -- Pawhuska... County seat of Osage county. Established May 4, 1876, named for the well known Osage chief Paw-Hiu-Skah, whose name means "white hair".
March 12, 1880 -- Skiatook... On the county line between Tulsa and Osage counties, 13 miles north of Tulsa. Established March 12, 1880. Until April, 1892, the official spelling of the post office was "Ski-a-took". Named for Skiatooka, a prominent Osage, the community around his home having been known as Skiatooka's Settlement.
Period in 1880 -- Wau-ti-au-cah... Osage county, 6 miles NW of Skiatook. Established for a short period in 1880. Named for Wah-ti-au-cah, an Osage sub-chief.
May 5, 1890 -- Gray Horse... osage county, 5 miles SE of Fairfax. Established May 5, 1890 to Dec. 31, 1931, named for Gray Horse, or Ko-wah-ho-tsa, an Osage Medicine Man.
Feb. 10, 1891 -- Hominy... Southern Osage county, 16 miles south of Pawhuska. Established Feb. 10, 1891. Although there are several versions of the origin of the name, the word is probably a corruption of Marmony, referring to the Harmony Mission in Missouri.
Nov. 10. 1891 -- Embree... On the Osage county line, 6 miles west of Ramona. Established from Nov. 10, 1891 to March 5, 1892.
Oct. 5, 1892 -- Hampton... NE Osage county, 5 miles west of Copan. Established from Oct. 5, 1892 to Oct. 25, 1897, named for William A. Hampton, 1st postmaster.
July 6, 1894 -- Land... Western Osage county, adjoining Ponca City. Established from July 6, 1894 to March 1895, named for James T. Land, 1st postmaster.
Sept. 17, 1896 -- Henry... Osage county, 15 miles west of Tulsa. Established Sept. 17, 1896 to March 31, 1905, named for Henry Anderson, husband of the 1st postmaster.
Oct. 3, 1901 -- Mitscher... Nothern Osage county, 6 miles NE of Foraker. Established from Oct. 3, 1901 to June 14, 1902, named for O. A. Mitscher of Pawhuska, later Mayor of Oklahoma City and father of Admiral Marc Mitscher.
Feb. 13, 1903 -- Foraker... NW Osage county. Established Feb. 13, 1903. Named for Joseph B. Foraker, US Senator from Ohio.
Feb. 16, 1903 -- Fairfax... Western Osage county. Established Feb. 16, 1903. Although there are several versions explaining its origin, the name is probably in honor of Lord Fairfax of Virginia.
Dec. 17, 1903 -- Wynona... Osage county, 8 miles south of Pawhuska. Established Dec. 17, 1903. Name is a Sioux word meaning "first born daughter".
May 10, 1904 -- Algiers... SE Osage County near Skiatook. from May 10, 1904 to Dec. 31, 1904. Name comes from the city in North Africa.
Jan. 18, 1905 -- Remington... Osage county, 5 miles south of Burbank. Established from Jan. 18, 1905 to March 15, 1912. Name came from the Remington rifle.
Sept. 30, 1905 -- Prue... Southern Osage county, 9 miles SE of Cleveland. Established Sept. 30, 1905. Named for Henry Prue, townsite owner.
Jan. 13, 1906 -- Bigheart... Present post office of Barnsdall in Osage county. Post office established Jan. 13, 1906, and name changed to Barnsdall, Nov. 22, 1921. Named for James Bigheart, Osage Chief.
Jan. 17, 1906 -- Okesa... Osage county, 11 miles west of Bartlesville. Established from Jan. 17, 1906 to Dec. 31, 1940, name is an Osage word meaning "halfway" the site being halfway between Pawhuska and the Cherokee boundary.
Aug. 28, 1906 -- Avant... Eastern Osage county, 7 miles SE of Barnsdall, established Aug. 28, 1906, named for Ben Avant, prominent Osage Indian.
Nov. 23, 1906 -- Osage... Western Osage county, 5 miles east of Cleveland. Established Nov. 23, 1906.
Nov. 26, 1906 -- Salt Creek... present Grainola, in NW Osage county. Established Nov. 26, 1906, and named changed to Grainola March 28, 1910. Took its name from nearby Salt Creek, a tributary of the Arkansas River.
Dec. 1, 1906 -- Nelagoney... Osage county, 7 miles SE of Pawhuska. Stablished Dec. 1, 1906 to Feb. 28, 1959, name is an Osage word meaning "Good Water" or "Spring".
Sept. 3, 1907 -- Belford... Osage county, 5 miles SW of Ralston. Established from Sept. 3, 1907 to March 31, 1915, named for Irene Belford, 1st postmaster.
Dec. 31, 1907 -- Burbank... Western Osage county, 24 miles west of Pawhuska. Established Dec. 31, 1907. The name is generally believed to have been taken from a nearby rocky bluff along Salt Creek, covered with cockleburs.
Jun. 26, 1908 -- Pahe... Western Osage county, 7 miles SE of Ponca City. Established from June 26, 1908 to Jan. 14, 1911, named for Pretty Hair, an Osage tribal leader.
Jan. 10, 1910 -- Frankfort... NW Osage county, 10 miles NW of Foraker. Established from Jan. 12, 1910 to Aug. 15, 1912, named for Frank Murphy, townsite developer.
Mar. 28, 1910 -- Grainola... Formerly Salt Creek. In NW Osage county, 6 miles NW of Foraker. Named to Grainola, March 28, 1910, and closed June 22, 1974.
Dec. 2, 1910 -- Bartlett... Western Osage county near Fairfax. Established from Dec. 2, 1908 to June 31, 1910, named for Don Carlos Bartlett, early day resident.
Jan. 6, 1911 -- Barnsdale... Osage county near Barnsdall, from Jan. 6, 1911 to Jan. 30, 1915, name is a variant of Barnsdall Oil Company.
Jan. 20, 1911 -- Blackland... Osage county, 12 miles NW of Pawhuska, established Jan. 20, 1911, and named for the black soil. On Dec. 14, 1917, post office was moved 3 miles SE and the name changed to Pearsonia.
May 10, 1914 -- Souter... Western Osage county, 3 miles from Cleveland. Named for George W. Souter, a prominent local resident. Established from May 19, 1914 to Sept. 29, 1917.
Apr. 29, 1915 -- Herd... Northern Osage county, 13 miles NE of Pawhuska. Established from April 29, 1915 to March 31, 1945, named for Joe Herrod, local rancher and cattleman.
Dec. 14, 1917 -- Pearsonia... Formerly Blackland, in Osage county, 9 miles NW of Pawhuska. Post office was moved 3 miles SE and name changed to Pearsonia, Dec. 14, 1917; post office discontinued Dec. 31, 1936. Named for Joseph R. Pearson, townsite owner.
May 31, 1919 -- Pershing... Osage county, 5 miles SE of Pawhuska. Established from May 31, 1919 to March 8, 1957. Named for General John J. Pershing.
Aug. 2, 1920 -- Pulare... Southeastern Osage county, 9 miles NW of Sand Springs. Established from Agu. 2, 1920 to Sept. 29, 1928.
Aug. 18, 1920 -- Red Eagle... Osage county, 12 miles NW of Bartlesville. Established Aug. 18, 1920 to Oct. 15, 1930. Named for Paul Red EAgle, Osage chief.
Mar. 26, 1921 -- Tallant... Osage county, 3 miles NW of Barnsdall. Established from March 26, 1921 to March 8, 1957. Named for Ralph K. Tallant, executive of Cities Service Oil Co.
Sept. 15, 1921 -- Arondale... Osage county near Hominy, from Sept. 15, 1921 to July 15, 1935. Oil field boomtown named for Aaron Stelle, oil field superintendent.
Dec. 31, 1921 -- DeNoya... Western Osage county, 3 miles SW of Shidler. Known locally as Whizbang. Established from Dec. 31, 1921 to Sept. 30, 1942. Named for Joseph F. DeNoya, prominent Osage.
Feb. 23, 1922 -- Shidler... Osage county, 21 miles northwest of Pawhuska. Established Feb. 23, 1922. Named for E. S. Shidler, townsite developer.
Nov. 22, 1922 -- Barnsdall... Formerly Bigheart, in eastern Osage county. Name changed to Barnsdall, Nov. 22, 1921. Name from Barnsdall Oil company.
Dec. 16, 1922 -- Webb City... NW Osage county. Post office established Dec. 16, 1922. Named for Horace Webb, townsite owner.
Dec. 16, 1922 -- Wolco... Eastern Osage county, 5 miles east of Barnsdall. Established from Dec. 16, 1922 to March 31, 1957. Name was coined from that of the Wolverine Oil Company.
Aug. 20, 1923 -- Cooper... Western Osage county, 8 miles north of Burbank. Established from Aug. 20, 1923 to oct. 14, 1939. Named for Edward E. Cooper, eary day resident.
Nov. 12, 1923 -- Bowring... NE Osage county, 18 miles NE of Pawhuska. Post office established Nov. 12, 1923, named was coined from the surname of two ranchers, Mart Bowhan and Richard Woodring.
Mar. 22, 1924 -- Lyman... NW Osage county, 6 miles NW of Shidler. Established from March 22, 1924 to Feb. 15, 1956, named for A. J. Lyman, townsite owner.
Aug. 14, 1928 -- Carter Nine... Osage county, 22 miles NW of Pawhuska. Established Aug. 14, 1928. Name was coined from the name of the Carter Oil company and the land description, Section 9-Township 26N-Range 6E. Closed early 1969.

Townsites & Shipping Points...

Apperson -- Western Osage county, 4 miles northwest of Burbank. A townsite established in Aug. 1920. It was named for the Apperson automobile.

Betts -- A switch stop on the SAnta Fe Railway in Osage county, 7 miles west of Pawhuska. Named for C. E. Betts, general aufitor of the Santa Fe.

Boulanger -- In Northern Osage county, 19 miles northeast of Pawhuska. A former townsite, established in 1914 and named for Isaac Boulanger, townsite owner.

Hulah -- In Northeastern Osage county, 10 miles north and west of Bartlesville. Townsite plat filed March 4, 1918. The name is the Osage word for hluah, meaning "eagle."

Keefe -- A rural community in Osage county, 3 miles east of Fairfax. Named for J. H. Keefe, vice-president of the Santa Fe Railway.

Little Chief -- A rural community in western Osage county, 5 miles southeast of Burbank. Took its name from nearby Little Chief Creek.

McInnis -- A switch and loading point on the Santa Fe Railway in Osage county, 8 miles west of Pawhuska. Named for E. E. McInnis, Santa Fe Railway attorney.

New Prue -- In Osage county north of the former Prue townsite. Relocated because of the Keystone Reservoir.

Perrier -- In Osage county, 8 miles east of Hominy. Townsite plat filed Sept. 3, 1918. It was named for James Perrier, prominent Osage.

Soldani -- A switch and loading point on the the Santa Fe Railway in western Osage county, adjoining Burbank. Named for Sylvester Coldani, prominent Osage.

Strohm -- In Osage county, 7 miles northeast of Fairfax. Named for Charles B. Strohm, Santa Fe Railway official.

Whizbang -- Local name for DeNoya in Osage count. Took its name from Captain Billy's Whizbang, a magazine popular at the time.

Woolaroc -- In Osage county, 14 miles southwest of Bartlesville. Well known ranch of the late Frank Phillips and now a game preserve and museum. The name was coined from the words woods, lakes, and rocks.
