West
side of NSN Castle on the Hill, 1917.
Using Norman-French castles
as models, Guthrie architect, John Foucart, designed a building complete
with towers, turrets, and crenellations. The laying of the cornerstone
took place July 1, 1898, and the dedication speech was delivered by
Temple Houston, Woodward attorney and son of Texas' Sam Houston. "The
Castle on the Hill" was completed in about thirteen months at a
cost of $110,000 and was turned over to the Board of Education on April
5, 1899. This area landmark was destroyed by fire March 1, 1935.
