To The Friends of the Northwestern Normal

Athletic Associations in schools and colleges are organizations whose aims are much higher and whose results are much more beneficial than many might be led to infer from the mere name. This ought to be especially true at schools whose chief function is to train teachers, and it is true of the Athletic Association of the Northwestern Normal School. Every student who goes out as teacher into the schools of Oklahoma, must be not merely a hearer of recitations and a keeper of order inside the school room, but must, in country schools at least, be fit to be an intelligent ruler of the playground as well. The chief function of the Athletic Association then it to form and foster a student sentiment which will incline students to pay attention to this phase of their education which they might, if left to themselves, be inclined to neglect, and so help to make them what Oklahoma demands her teachers shall be -- fit to teach and to rule on the playground as well as rule and teach in the school room.

To stimulate this interest, moreover, they must support teams in the various sports and must match games with other institutions, All This means expense and a great deal of it, neither will the gate receipts at games meet all this expense until both the student body and the citizens of Alva give heartier support than they have hitherto done. Especially is this true as regards the citizens of Alva, for much of the success of a state school depends upon how loyally the home town rallies to its support. This is more evidently true of Athletics than of many other things in which it is just as essentially true, and because it is so manifestly true the Association hopes to see a constant growth of loyalty to the school in this respect as well as in all others, not merely on the part of the student body but on the part of every well wisher of Alva for the best interests of Alva and the best interests of the Northwestern Normal School can not be considered a part from each other.
