The wheat is growing and the mares are foaling (if that is the correct term) here in NW Oklahoma. AND.... April has vanished somewhere along with March, February and January. Have you noticed the quilt pastures of wheat, alfalfa scattered about the countryside lately. Things have a beautiful green to them this time of year. I hope it is a great year for the farmers.

We had completely forgot about the fountain story with the 2x4 lumber pressed into thewrought iron fence spikes around the fountain on the west side of the square.

Vol 12, Iss 30Alva, Oklahoma - I did not get to see my horse pal, Nugget, but doesn't he look great grazing out at Clark's West Ranch? And what about that little Dun filly, Maggie, and her 2010 filly colt.
NW Okie put more photos of her horses along with Clark's Longhorns, on her Facebook photo album.
Vol 6, Iss 41Alva, Oklahoma - The crowds from surrounding communities flocked to Alva last weekend for football and homecoming. The sidewalks of the downtown square in Alva was somewhat packed, but not like it was in the early days.
I am running quite late tonight... later than this Okie would like. As
I write this, my Pug puppy is lying in her crate fast asleep. I
have made a few changes to her name, though. You see ... when we
are outside in the yard she loves to tackle the dandelion flowers
and their puff balls. She doesn't eat them. She just picks them
as she plows through our dandelion patch... leaving a slight furry
residue on her lower puppy dog chin. So.... I changed her name to
Duchess Dande-Lion Rose! Duchess is 10 weeks old this Friday weighing
in at close to 2 or 3 lbs. A real sweetheart of a puppy.
Vol 12, Iss 19Alva, Oklahoma - We hope all the mothers and grandmothers out there had a great "Mother's Day" this Sunday.
NW Okie received Mother Day roses from an rose bushes via the internet and all the way from northwest Oklahoma. The pink rose bush on the left is an old bush planted by NW Okie's Grandmother Constance Estella (Warwick) McGill sometime back in the late 1940's. It has been blooming, growing ever since! The photo on the right is a closeup of one of those pink roses.
Vol 12, Iss 29Alva, Oklahoma - This NW Okie, even being born and raised in Northwest Oklahoma Hot, humid Summers, has gotten so accustomed to the cool rocky mountains of southwest Colorado that she is ready to head back West to the mountains. Duchess is even complaining, panting in this heat.

Vol 6, Iss 38Alva, Oklahoma - "Linda, I was reading your bio and it seems we are in the same age. I was born in Alva on April 3, '49. The second daughter of Arthur and Betty Fisher Corbin. I attended Washington elementary school in first grade, then we moved to Las Vegas, NV.
Vol 3, Iss 2Alva, Oklahoma - Well, you've done it again. Your latest epistle
has jogged the old memory cells again. First, was pleased to be able
to see the picture of Alvin and Naomi Paris. Boy, did that take me
back. As I have mentioned before, we lived next door to them when
I was very young, and played with Stan and Lynn around the old Armory...
Another memory, Naomi 'Warren' Paris's parents lived across the street
west of Alvin's, and Mr Warren was the Alva Fire Chief for many years.
She also had brother's, I believe named Stan and Galen. After the
war, I believe, it was Galen who had a business called 'The Little
Red Wagon'. This was one of the old panel type trucks with a bell
on the front, in which he carried 'basic groceries.' We had a card
that we would put in the window to signal a stop, or we would go out
and flag him down to make purchases. This beat a trip 'all the way
to town' to buy one or two items. Enough of my rambling reminiscences
for now. You are possibly aware of much of this information, but you
jogged my old memories. Thanks again, for the memories." -- Marvin,

Yes it has cooled in Oklahoma (at least here in the Perry area), and last week we had about 6 inches of rain (spread out over three days) [more]... ~Roy Kendrick
regarding Okie's story
from Vol. 11 Iss. 34
titled
UNTITLED
Vol 12, Iss 29Alva, Oklahoma - Well! Here Sadie and myself (Duchess) are back in Northwest Oklahoma again. Boy Howdy! Your Oklahoma humidity and Summer heat sure make this Pug pant hard to keep this pug body cool outside. NW Okie will not let me outside for very long. I think I am going to have to drag NW Okie back to the Rocky mountains where I do not pant when I am outside.
Vol 5, Iss 15Alva, Oklahoma - Besides
history breaking Wednesday of this week, I have been busy training,
caring for my new Li'l Pug puppy (Duchess) who turned 8 weeks this
weekend. It's kind of like taking care of a new born infant. She
eats, sleeps, plays and wakes me up about every 3 or 4 hours at
night time to go outside and take care of business. We fixed up
a dog crate for her sleeping area. She has taken to it quite nicely.
They say you can't go home again! Maybe you can! Maybe you can't! Whatever the case may be, things do change. AND... So do you! Nothing ever stays the same. You grow wiser and things seem smaller, older in your hometown. Have you noticed that everyone, including yourself begins to resemble their own parents. AND... there are more vacant business spaces around the square.
Vol 5, Iss 15Alva, Oklahoma - Rev.
A. Connet -- He was born in Green County, Pennsylvania, Oct.
17, 1834. He was ordained in Southern Indiana, Oct. 20, 1861. He
came from near Dwight, Morris county, Kansas, to Alva and preached
his first sermon, Sept. 24 (1893), the second Sunday after the opening,
in C. W. Hobbie's new store building. He assisted in the collection
of funds for the Union church, and with his own hands assisted in
its erection. In it he conducted thanksgiving services on Thanksgiving
day, 1893. The church was commenced on Monday and the services were
held in it on Thursday of the same week. Mr. Connet married at his
home one block south of the center of the square, the first couple,
Mr. and Mrs. E. G. McIntire, that were married in the county, on
Christmas day, 1903. W. F. Hatfield and wife witnessed the ceremony.
Price-Langley - 1941, Abilene, Texas - Engagement Is Announced - Rev. and Mrs. John Price, Coahoma, Texas, wish to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Patty Jeane, to Fred Langley, son of Dr. and Mrs. M. Vol 12, Iss 18Alva, Oklahoma - Someone wrote us this week, "We are not OKIES. They went to Califonia (California) during dust bowl. We are Oklahomans & insulted. signed all Oklahomans"
First of all -- I know it was not signed by ALL Oklahomans, because I know some Oklahomans that do not mind being called an "Okie" and are not insulted by the use of the term.
Vol 12, Iss 21Alva, Oklahoma - Bill Beeler, (email: brbeeler@swbell.net) says, "NESCATUNGA ARTS FESTIVAL is Saturday, June 4 on the downtown square of Alva, Oklahoma. The Class of 1960 will be having their class reunion that weekend.
Would like to invite all to stop by our canopy and say hello and visit awhile. Should be fun for all.
Vol 5, Iss 15Alva, Oklahoma - "Yes, everybody called him Jack. I believe
his actual name was John though. I bid on one of his paintings at
auction once. It was one he had done of the terrain west of Alva with
Hereford cattle in it. We raise Angus here on our farm, but I remember
Jack painting such beautiful pictures of the red cattle. The land
around Alva is not lush and green, as it is here in the Tallgrass.
Vol 6, Iss 39Alva, Oklahoma - "Joy Sherman has n old commemorative edition of the Courier which contained the same picture in a 1938 publication. It did not identify the people in the picture, but it did say that the group was the First Grand Jury in Woods County. Because of that statement, I assume that this picture was made in 1907 when “M” County was dissolved and Woods County came into being.
Vol 6, Iss 43Alva, Oklahoma - The Oklahoma Book - The Next Star on the Flag -- "I found this book on eBay and did not get the bid for it. The fellow who owned it offered to scan select pages for me, so these are the ones I asked for.
Vol 3, Iss 2Alva, Oklahoma - Would not swear there were not other Monfort
apartments, but there used to be apartments upstairs of most of the
two-storied buildings around the square. Above the old Monfort Drug
Store, located on the southwest corner of the square, in addition
to apartments there were doctor and dentist offices. As I recall,
Dr Simon, Dr Shephard, and Dr Ritchey had offices there. Above the
Schumacher Drug Store, Hadwiger Law Offices were located. [more]...
