Duchess Corner

Contrary to what some might think, they do NOT pay Oakie to leave the State of Oklahoma! At least she has NOT seen any kick-back from her scheduled departures from NW Oklahoma.

AND... After we got back to the SW Colorado mountains, Sadie weighed-in at 5.5 pounds during her 13-1/2 weeks checkup with the Vet here in Bayfield, Colorado. That's a 2-pound gain in three weeks. I think it's all legs, though!

On Monday of this week, in NW Oklahoma the temperature at Freedom was forecast to be 104 degree. We left Oklahoma Monday morning, headed to Colorado -- the forecast for Tuesday in Freedom was 78 degrees. Does this have anything to do with Oakie Leaving? Does she make it "HOT" in NW Oklahoma? Who knows!

We have had lots of hummingbird visitors this week. In the evenings we might count from 8 to 10 hovering over each feeder. AND... we have two feeders hanging on the front patio. Those hummingbirds seem to go through the couple of feeders in a couple of days. I told Oakie we need to get to the grocery store and stock up on sugar. [Hummingbird Nectar Recipe: 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Boil water first, then measure and add sugar, at the rate of 1/4 cup of sugar to 1 cup of water. Let cool and store excess in regrigerator until ready to use. Do NOT add food coloring, honey or artificial sweetener.]

With the end of July upon us, where has the Summer gone? It has been warm in SW Colorado, but not like Oklahoma. At least it cools off during the dawn and dusk hours. AND... the temperatures are about 20 degrees cooler (without the humidity) here in SW Colorado as compared to NW Oklahoma. That's the one...right at the dead end of the road. The only traffic into that wilderness trail has to be on foot or horseback. Back in the late 1960's I could have bought a newly constructed 2 bedroom vacation home there, not far from that campground, for less than $35,000...blue spruces in everydirection one looked. Peaches were ten cents a pound and I didn't have a dime.Last time I was there development had creeped up to the campground area. The prices had gone to a quarter of a mil., and up. There goes paridise. ~Charlie Cook in Louisiana Bayou Country 2005-08-03 18:23:40
I believe I know that place Charlie stated, "A wilderness area begins in the back of the camp ground, and the trail follows the river into the San Juan Mountains." Does the road running through that "small valley" end up at the campgrounds?  ~NW Okie 2005-07-31 07:39:47
For many many years I often camped in the Summer in SW Colorado. We often stayed in the campground at the northern terminus of the road that follows the river up Vallicito Valley. That's pronounced Vi-yeh-see-toe, and means little valley in Spanish. A wilderness area begins in the back of the camp ground, and the trail follows the river into the San Juan Mountains. The camp ground is almost 9000' above sea level, and is much cooler than Oklahoma. Hey! It's cooler than Bayfield. Many people hung humming bird feeders on their campers. Some had one on all four corners. There were so many humming birds that the feeders looked like lights with bugs swarming around them. There were a number of different varieties of these tiny birds, and they fought like tigers to be king of their chosen feeder...one of the best screen savers I ever experienced. I've traveled all over the country over the years, and Vallecito pulled me back again more than any other place, and just in Colorado there are a number of other places that are nothing short of wonderful. ~Charles M.
