Okie's NW Corner

This week's newsletter is a bit short this week. You see... this Pug is in the process of heading back this weekend to the muggy, summer heat of Oklahoma. I shall miss the cool, dry climate of SW Colorado, though.

They tell us that over 3 inches of rain -- gusty winds ranging around 80 mile per hour -- tennis to golf ball size hail pounded the northwest parts of our neck of the Woods earlier this week in NWOklahoma. Leaving remnants of tree limbs scattered about as reminders of Mother Nature's Summer force.

As for the 4th of July Celebrations last weekend... 4th July 2004 Fireworks - San Mountains of ColoradoEven dogs (including this Precious Pug) tagged along, meeting and mixing with the crowds, citizens that gathered on July 4, 2004 at the north edge of this Southwest Colorado Lake Resort to share the excitement, declaration of our independence in this United States of America.

After wearing myself out "woofing" at the commotion, movements, I found me a safe place to settle down next to Oakie -- sleeping most of the time while Oakie was trying to get her camera in sync to catch just the right shot of the fireworks before it faded into oblivion. BUT... she did get a couple of great shots to share.

Before we send you to our Mailbag Corner, we need your help, research. Can you Help?

For instance... We just found out that two silent pictures were filmed in Warwick, Oklahoma, in Lincoln County? We do not know what year they were filmed. Has anyone ran across any research, stories of Warwick, Oklahoma's silent films?

We still haven't found our Northwest Oklahoma ghost town that supposedly is located northwest of Waynoka and Northeast of Mooreland with a 6 foot monument with remnants of the rifle on the top.

Another inquiry... this reader is looking for a person by the name of Pamela Allen.  She would have been about 17 years of age in 1971 -- living in Alva.  We think she had other relatives living in the area as well. If you can help, please contact Marvin. His e-mail is listed in the Mailbag Corner.

For all of those who live, have knowledge of Ingersol, Oklahoma... There is another lady whose Great-Grandparents homesteaded -- lived in Ingersol, Oklahoma. Ingersol is located a few miles east of Alva on hwy 64. Ingersol does have a popular place for those who love Bar-B-Cue. Anyway, this reader would love to share some great pictures of her Henry Hubbards family... and would love to hear from anyone from Ingersol, Oklahoma.

If any of this Okie legacies rings a bell -- jogs some memory cells, we would love to hear from you and so would some of our readers.

Please do not be offended by Oakie's Soapbox below! Everyone needs to get on their soapbox now and then. It stirs the blood and is good for the soul. Peace!

Lost Ghost Town of NW Oklahoma...

"Dear Linda, It has been years since I have been in that particular area, but it seems to me that  a town that was northeast of Mooreland, and southwest of Waynoka, down into a valley had the name of Quinlan, but I am not 100% sure. Keep up the  NUMBER 1  web site of Northwest Oklahoma. A misplaced Okie from Texas." -- Francis R. Fahrenheit 9/11...

Fahrenheit 9/11... "...We may come to look back on its (Fahrenheit 9/11) hugely successful first week the way we now think of the televised presidential debate between John Kennedy and Richard Nixon, as a moment when we grasped for the first time the potential of a mass medium in this case, movies to affect American politics in new ways." 8 Bull Elk in SW Colorado...

"I tried to send these to you yesterday but yours was rejected so will try again.  We have 8 bull elk roaming our place and maybe yours also.  I saw them yesterday morning right up by the field of hay Jack cut Thursday evening.   I sneaked up as close as I could and then zoomed in.  They are in the velvet and so pretty." -- Ann

Merriman & Kirtley Families...

"I am an Oklahoma native.  My father and mother were both from Perry.  They are the Merriman and Kirtley families. My husband also had relatives in Billings whose name was Winchell. I grew up in Tulsa and now live in Dallas.  Anything you may have come across concerning these families would be very interesting to me.  Thanks." -- Patricia Merriman Giddens - Email: thegiddies@comcast.net View/Write Comments (count 0)   |   Receive updates (0 subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe

Samuel Andrew McGill, b. 1851, & His Daughter, Cora...

"I am researching my ancestor, Samuel McGill. I have photos of him and his daughter. He was born in Tennessee, May 31, 1851 and died in Texas.  I think that William Thomas (1885-1969) may be his brother but so far have not found the documentation for this.  It is amazing to me how many McGills (or Magils) are in Oklahoma - ran across a lone tombstone near Asher last year and if I can find the photo, will also send that one to you - couldn't figure out what he was doing in the midst of a cemetery without other McGills!  Cora McGill - 18 years of age (1911)Now the daughter (Cora McGill, b. 1893, Samuel's daughter) is going to look a little silly - she had her photo taken just before she married and was given her choice of hats to wear from the photographer - she said since she didn't do this every day, she wanted to go ahead and make it the most elaborate hat in the collection but spent the pose concentrating on keeping it on her head - I was never that silly at her age -- which looks almost 18!  Anyway, it's cute once you know the story and it is a very fancy hat even for the early 1900s.  I think the photo of Samuel is quite dashing and am very proud of it.   Looking forward to the detective work. Here are the photos of the McGills - I hope somebody recognizes them - the one of Samuel is color enhanced! Thanks!" -- Leona - Email: leonapettit@yahoo.com

Warwick, Oklahoma & Silent Pictures...

Your information on Warwick, Oklahoma. I was born and raised there. I went to Warwick School until it was consolidated. Some of the information you have however is missing. There are two other teachers that taught at the school that were not mentioned. One Golda McNeal and Marvel List. Mrs. List was the last to teach there. I have many fond memories of growing up in that community and have wonderful stories from my parents and grandparents. I have great uncle still living there who is 86 who knows a lot of history. Some people only tell what they want others to know. Also, it is also my understanding at some point two silent pictures were filmed in Warwick. I don't know the years, but I have always been told that. Thanks again for the memories." -- LaGina Brown Ridgeway - Email: laginasue@sbcglobal.net View/Write Comments (count 0)   |   Receive updates (0 subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe

NW Oklahoma Weather...

"We got 1/2 inches Sunday night and 2-1/2 inches last night (monday) at Fairvalley. There were supposed to be 80 mile an hour winds last night and a girl from Alva I work with said her car received hail damage last night. I know there were a lot of limbs blown down -- don't know of any other damage. It was real stormy here also on the 4th. The lightning was terrible so we didn't watch very many fireworks. Thinking of you all also have a safe trip back home, will see you then." View/Write Comments (count 0)   |   Receive updates (0 subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe

EFF - The Provisions Of The USA PATRIOT Act... "That Relate To Online Activities (October 31, 2001) - Last updated October 27, 2003 - Introduction: On October 26, 2001, President Bush signed the USA PATRIOT Act (PATRIOT) into law. PATRIOT gave sweeping new powers to both domestic law enforcement and international intelligence agencies and eliminated the checks and balances that previously gave courts the opportunity to ensure that such powers were not abused. Most of these checks and balances were put into place after previous misuse of surveillance powers by these agencies were uncovered including the revelation in 1974 that the FBI and foreign intelligence agencies had spied on over 10,000 U.S. citizens, including Martin Luther King....." -- About Electriconic Frontier Foundation View/Write Comments (count 0)   |   Receive updates (0 subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe
