I would like to see more information on the merger of Britton, Ok. into ok. city. I managed two theatres in Britton, 1949-1951. I always believed it was a big mistake, Britton citizens made when thet voted to be annexad. They really lost their idenity when that merger happened.

Okie's NW Corner

I'm late! I'm late! For a very important date... as usual! This last week does NOT have enough hours in the days. AND... we loose an hour this weekend with Daylight Savings Time. April is here and so are five new little stud colts in our neck of the woods. I want to introduce you to Sofie and her 2004 stud colt that made itself known earlier this week. I was in horse heaven the day I found this colt out in the pasture. You see... Sofie let me near enough to pet on her and she let me kneel down and stroke her colt on his body and head area. WOW! What a treat for this writer. Thanks, Sofie, for trusting in me! Click Sofie's photo for a larger view.

Besides taking pictures of the new colts this week, I finally got to ride my 3-year-old mare (Cassie). She is a gentle, calm thing. I'm told she is a walking horse. NOW... I just need some riding experience, practice of my own.

1960 Democrat Memorabilia...

I was digging through some old 1960 Democratic campaign keepsakes of my Dad's that he collected and thought there might be some Democrats, collectors out there that would like to see these Democratic memorabilia. Just click the photo to the left for a larger view of the '60-PT tie clips, Kennedy key chain (with Ask not what your country can do for you.....), jewel democratic donkey pins, jewel democratic necklace & pin, and a couple of Kennedy-Johnson campaign buttons.

WWII Nazi POW Camp of Broken Arrow...

In the Mailbag Corner there is someone looking for information on an old WWII Nazi POW Camp in the Broken Arrow area of Oklahoma. If anyone out there has any information or history, photos, you might contact us. I did a little search of my own on-line and found where the Nazi POW Camp of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma may have some ghosts haunting it. This is what I found at - The Shadowlands - Ghost & Huntings... "Broken Arrow Nazi POW Camp is just north of the Arkansas River, south of a neighborhood there is an old military installation that has been shut off for years. Supposedly it used to hold Nazi POWs from WWII. If one goes there late at night you get a bad feeling from the place, and sometimes you can hear things from behind the locked gate."

This Week Happenings...

I have had several people ask me for pictures of the "Home Comfort Range" that is in my 1934 Home Comfort Cookbook. So... I have recently scanned pictures of various models in the Home Comfort Cookbook and put them on my NW OkieLegacy Webshots Album - Wrought Iron Range for those you might be interested in learning a little about the Wrought Iron Range Company of St. Louis, Missouri and see photos of the ranges. They evolved in 1864 from the "Farmer" Cook Stove. My cookbook goes with the "Model CB range." Anyone out there have any old, workable Home Comfort Ranges.... or stories... or history of the Wrought Iron Range Co. and Home Comfort Ranges? I guess (from reading the cookbook and what I can find online) the ranges weren't sold in stores, but by traveling salesmen who carried small replicas of the ranges.

There is also another person out there looking for any imformation on the Hawk Dairy out of Tulsa, Oklahoma... Or Hawk Southside in Oklahoma City. Is there anyone out there that would like to share some history, photos? Thanks!

I know this newsletter is a bit short and late this week, because... We spent most of Friday afternoon at the Shawnee Horse Expo Center helping a friend (Bud Clark) celebrate his birthday. Tomorrow we are spending Saturday & Sunday at the Oklahoma City State Fair Arena, Saturday & Sunday (April 3 & 4), 9am - 5pm, at the Parelli 2-Day Horsemanship Seminar.

So.... I better end here for the night and get some sleep before dawn creeps upon us. AND... we loose an hour Saturday/Sunday night with Daylight Savings Time just around the corner. Before you go to bed Saturday night (after watching OSU beat Georgia Tech), don't forget to turn your clocks forward an hour. AND... Don't forget to tune-in to Oklahoma's OSU Cowboys basketball team Saturday evening at the Final Four Basketball Finals in San Antonio, Texas this weekend when they play Georgia Tech. Go OSU Pokes! We are with you all the way. See you all next weekend with more Okie Legacies.

1906 Woods "M" County Atlas...

"I enjoyed the Okie Legacy - I look forward to receiving it every week.  We have fewer than 10 copies of the reprint of the 1906 Woods County Atlas , which covers Woods, Major and Alfalfa Counties, left at the Museum Gift Shop in Waynoka. It's a wonderful coffee table book, and so useful.  If anyone is interested in the Atlas, they could email me at sandieo@pldi.net , or call at 580-824-5871.  Thanks." -- Sandie - Email: sandieo@pldi.net

Sales Tax Tokens from Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado...

Sales Tokens "Sales tax tokens were recently discussed here. Most, if not all states, once had them at one time. I've attached photos of one from Oklahoma , Kansas and Colorado, along with an Oklahoma Railroad token, and one from a billiard parlor in Marshall , Oklahoma. The square one from Colorado is about the size of a quarter. Note that Oklahoma calls it a tax check. They would be very highly impractical today. A penny, a full cent, has so little value that some people will no longer stoop to pick one up from a sidewalk. Besides our tax is now just rounded off to the next highest cent." -- Charlie Cook in Louisiana Bayou Country

Roger County Ghost Towns...

"Hello, I live in northwestern Rogers county and I recently bought an ATV. So... I ride back behind our property and found a spot where several very old buildings once stood. I was wondering if possibly this was the remains of an old fort or ghost town or what. I live approximatly 3-1/2 miles east of highway 169 on state highway 20. The buildings are about 1or 1-1/2 miles NNW of my home almost to the Caney River near Hobs Creek. If you have any information on this I would appreciate knowing. I have been told that it was possibly a stop on a stage coach trail. I have also been told that it was once the Rogers County jail. I have not confirmed either of these yet. Thank you for your time." -- Daniel Moore, Collinsville OK - Email: amfadan@yahoo.com

Wrought Iron Range Company Stove...

"I came across The Oakie Legacy when I searched the Web for information on a wrought iron range that is in our kitchen.  It's a Home Comfort by the Wrought Iron Range Company.  We inherited the range when we bought our house 4-years ago.  It is so large and heavy that I think the house was built around it!  I would love to know when it was built.  I tried to access the two Web links in your article but neither of them worked.  I gather that the cookbook has pictures of the various models of ranges. Would you mind if I sent you a picture of our range?  I will mail you a photo of the range, since I don't have a scanner.  Our range is square in shape, without the top unit of the later models.  The only one of the pictures to match it is the original range from 1870. Thank you for reading this, and responding." -- Linda View/Write Comments (count 0)   |   Receive updates (0 subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe

Vada Paris & John B. Doolin Memories...

"I enjoyed reading about Vada (Vada's 1938 Diary), although I didn't know her. My Dad, John B Doolin knew her. They (John Doolin & Gene McGill) apparently went to OU at the same time? Anyway, it's fun to read about family." -- Martha J. Doolin View/Write Comments (count 0)   |   Receive updates (0 subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe

Fort Supply, Mount Olive Church & Old Home Place...

More Issues of Ft. Gibson Post Newspaper on-line...

"I transcribe old newspapers and am often on my band box about how wonderful old papers are. Off and on I hear from people who have found information in the transcriptions that they've been looking for for years. This time it was my turn. For over 30 years I've been trying to find proof of a family story - about a great uncle arrested for horse stealing that died in jail somewhere in Indian Territory. As I was typing along I found an article substantiating the story - color me happy! I've added issues of the Ft. Gibson Post newspaper (Ft. Gibson, Muskogee County, I.T.) from March 23, 1898 through June 16, 1898. The Post is as easy to transcribe as the Eufaula Indian Journal is difficult and these issues have been fun issues to read and transcribe. (Other than my personal great find) these issues include information about the beginning of the Spanish American War, the raising of troops in Indian Territory, a very embroidered account of Fort Gibson and why people should move there, the passing of the Curtis Bill (approving allotments of land to the Indians and the making of the final Indian Rolls), a great flood of the 3 Rivers area, a detailed account of the corruption of the new city officials in Muldrow, the incorporation of Ft. Gibson and a bumper crop of local gossip from Ft Gibson and the surrounding areas. And - the on-going suspense of whether the editor of the Post will starve and be forced to move on or whether the good citizens of Ft. Gibson will pay up what they owe and keep the paper. The new issues have been submitted to the search engine and should be indexed shortly. homepages.rootsweb.com/~haas/newspapers/index.html." -- Linda - homepage: homepages.rootsweb.com/~haas - MarionCoAR: www.rootsweb.com/~armarion/ - TulsaCoOK: www.rootsweb.com/~oktulsa2

Nazi POW Camp of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma...

"I recently came across an article online that referred to a Nazi POW Camp that was located in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Searching for more information led me to your site, however... I see no reference to it. Does anyone have any insight to this? Perhaps there was a holding camp here before they were moved elsewhere? Any information would be greatly appreciated." -- Amy T. - Email: geekswife@cox.net View/Write Comments (count 0)   |   Receive updates (0 subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe

Edgar Jenkins, 1910 - Star Route, Lookout US Mail Carrier...

"Have just begun to look at the Okie Legacy web site. My reason for the interest is the fact that my grandfather, Edgar Jenkins, and his family owned land in Woods County, Section 15W from 1903 to 1909. In 1910, he was still a US mail carrier on a Star Route in the county, but moved soon after to Kansas, and then up into Iowa. It was most interesting to see the name of my grandfather, Ed Jenkins (Edgar Jenkins) listed as one of the mail carriers for the region around Lookout. We are aware that he bought an acreage on April 16,1903 in Woods County. 160 acres, Section 10, Township 28N, Range 19W.  We have no idea of exactly where this land lies, or how he disposed of it.  The 1910 census shows him in Woods County, and a US Mail carrier, star route. We do not know how' long he had this position, etc.  We do know that he apparently was married in Iowa, Hampton, to a Mary Dalrymple -- having divorced my grandmother, Delia Jenkins. It was most interesting to see his name on the Okie Legacy site. Thanks for the look." --   Edgar Jenkins, Colorado Springs, Co. - Email: RuthJenk@aol.com
