Greetings From SW Colorado Bear

Howdy, folks! My Pug Friend, Duchess, let me take over her column this week. Yes! I know the newsletter is later than the normal weekly published date for The OkieLegacy Weekly Tabloid. As for the photo on the left, that is me, the SW Colorado neighborhood bear rubbing his backside on the hanging pole of the birdfeeder.

NW Okie & David were on the road Sunday of this week to Scottsdale, Arizona on personal business. The WiFi access we have around here has been "on-again off-again" at times and NW Okie has had trouble connecting to the web to publish this week's newsletter. Thanks for your patience while we work through these last few days.

As I said earlier, I am their neighborhood SW Colorado bear that catapulted into their backyard on Monday, June 8, 2009, to raid this perfectly good hanging wildbird feeder. As for the birdfeeder, the only thing I found of interest was that it made a great back rub thingy and a marvelous sling-slot type using the feeder as a projectile. I completely demolished the feeder as it hit the slops of the hill, bounced downward and cracked up on decent.

I think NW Okie is letting me work off the replacement of the damaged bird feeder that I demolished last week.

Duchess says to tell you thanks for having patience for her NW Okie while they are on the road to Scottsdale, Arizona on personal business. That and on-again off-again WiFi connection is why this week's newsletter is running a few days late. It will be short this week!

Did you realize that Arizona is just one of a few states that does NOT participate in "Daylight Savings Time?" BUT ... it is on Mountain Standard Time (MST).

Lt. Bob McGill & Col. James Leach - WWII Hawaii

Matt Hermes, Ph. D. says, "Dear Linda, In continuing my work on the bio of Col Jimmie Leach I have come across the attached photo apparently taken in Hawaii in 1942. Is that Bob McGill? Pretty fine photo. That is Jimmie Leach second from right. Best regards."

WWII 1942 Hawaii, Uncle Bob McGill & Col. James Leach photo shows up on Dr. Hermes website for a memorial to Col. James Leach and his army life that dates back to WWII. Here is another link that shows the 1942 photo in Hawaii above with Kelley, McGill, Carson & Jimmie Leach (second from right), with the following quote made by Col. James Leach: They left Ft. Benning; the mission was to go to the Philippines. Readiness? The Battalion was far from ready. En route at Camp Polk in Louisiana they pulled into a siding and a new Lieutenant by the name of Bob McGill joined the battalion. “I’m new to this light tank business; I don’t know anything about it. How long have you all had’em?” he asked. “Got ‘em yesterday, sir.” “Good God.”

NWOSU's Old Men's Dorm

Nola says, "I attended 2nd and 3rd grades at Horace Mann (school years '48-'49 and '49-'50). The men's dorm was just west of the grade school and the students sometimes walked to and from classes across the grounds of the school.

We sometimes saw the housemother out walking with her little dog, a pekinese named "Chinky," and she would stop and let us kids on the playground pet and make over him. One day when I got home from school I was surprised to find "Chinky" at my house.

The housemother had contacted my mother and asked permission to give me the dog. She had apparently decided the dorm was not a good place for him or maybe she just found it problematic to take care of him there. Maybe she just thought he'd be happier with a family and kids to play with. Whatever her reason, I was certainly pleased to have "Chinky," and enjoyed him very much.

He puts in an appearance in some of the pictures I have from childhood days. I doubt that I could even remember that dorm being there if not for my experience with my good friend, 'Chinky'."

Oklahoma Rain & Gas

Roy says, "We knew that it was time for rain and hail because wheat harvest had begun and we cvertainly got some (but not enough moisture just yet). More is on the way we think. The hail in my front yard was only marble size. The wind tore off a couple of tree limbs in my front yard but I have no complaints.

About a half mile west of me I'm told that a large tree was toppled and destroyed a house next to the nursing home on Cedar street. I haven't seen it yet. I have seen the tree a half block from here that has had a two and a half foot (diameter) branch snapped off and is laying in the front yard.

It's across the street east of the Baptist Church parking lot (my house is just north of that parking lot). We only got an inch of rain out of it, but most of that fell in just 30 minutes. It was a fast moving storm.

Our Conoco gas price is presently $2.58.9 per gallon of regular unleaded."

Descendants of John Carnahan McClure

Sherry says, "John McClure married into a distant branch of my Latimer family. I do not have anything else on him. What I have came from the Day-Latimer book.

I do have a reference to one person for this family. I don't know how old the info and email address is for her. You might try it. The names Trimmier and Hannan are unique names to look for. Unfortunately, since they are all women, they are probably married at this point. You might try a people search on the internet for Margaret Hannan. Anymore, some sights even tell you about how old the person is to see if it may be the same person. Good luck!"

Insight Into Grandma

We are including two letters this week that John C. McClure of Altona, Illinois, wrote to Miss Constance Warwick, who was living in Alva, M "Woods" county, Oklahoma Territory, October 4 & October 24, 1904.

The first letter was postmarked, Altona, Ill., Oct. 4, 1904, 4 p.m. and received in Alva, O. T., Oct. 6, 1904, 5:33 a.m. It begins: "Altona, Ill., Sun. Eve., Miss Constance Warwick, Alva, Okla., Dear Friend Connie:

"It has been over a month since I have heard from you, and cannot imagine what the reason can be. If you don't care to correspond longer, of course it is my loss and your gain.

"I would like awfully well to know what you heard about me. Won't you please let me know what is wrong. If you wish to quit writing, can I keep your picture or send it to you, but I hope we will not have to quit. Write soon. Ever your True Friend, R.F.D. No. 13, J. C. McClure."

The second letter was also postmarked Alton, Ill., Oct. 25, 1904, 4 p.m. and received in Alva, Okla., Oct. 27, 1904,5:30 a.m. "It begins Altona, Ill, Oct. 24, 1904, Miss Constance Warwick, Alva, O.T., Dear Connie:

"I received your most welcome letter a few days ago. I didn't know whether you should ever write me a letter again or not. I'm glad you did not send that fierce letter, for it would have killed me off.

"We put up a wind mill today, so I had to work hard. It is the same as we have in Okla. I would like to see that place now. I'll bet it looks tough. It looked fairly decent, except the house. You may go over and take a look. Tell Bert you came over to see him for an excuse. Lie.

"Oh yes, I must tell you what those people wrote back about Bert Knox. When our cousin (Mr. Bolte) rented the place out there last Spring some of the neighbors told him that Several neighbors had lost wheat and said they guessed Knox could tell where it was if he wanted to. Did you hear anything like that. Don't say who told you.

"I went to a wedding last Thurday eve. I was a waiter, so I sure had plenty to eat. He was a classmate of mine in the country school. Next thursday eve another one of my classmates marries. He is the last one of a large class leaving me alone. It seems queer to see all the boys and girls married, who were in my class. Of course, several of them are older than me. Although, there two boys were but little older. Everybody is guying me about getting married, and I make them believe the day is near at hand. Everybody wants to know who the Pretty black-eyed girl is.

"Yesterday morning we had a big white frost. The first of the season. We are going to commence husking corn tomorrow. We have eighty acres to husk. Southern people do not know what corn husking means.

"It means to rise from your peaceful slumbers about 4:00 o'clock (two hours before day light) get the chores done which are more plentiful here than in Okla.; get to the corn field a little while before day light.

"Corn is the main crop here, and farmers have only about a month and a half to gather the crop to get it completed before snow comes. You may tell me how people did in Virginia Perhaps you may know more about someday.

"I expect I will go away to work the winter but I don't know where it will be yet. Say! I haven't had that Big fire yet. I will close. Sincerely yours. Answer soon. Bye Bye S. H. (Sweet Heart), J. C. McClure. P. S. You may depend on telling me about Other known fellow."

January 19, 1906 - NW O.T. News

As to the January 19, 1906 - NW O.T. News concerning ... "Oklahoma News - $10,000 Suit For Woman's Death -- Charles E. Carpenter, administrator of the estate of Mrs. Emma Archer, has brought suit against the street railway company at Guthrie for $10,000 damages for the death of Mrs. Archer, who was killed, with her daughter, Miss Dove Cupp, by an electric car on June 9, 1905. The case is being pushed by Mrs. Vera Calhoun, a Kansas City trained nurse, and the sister of Mrs. Archer, who has the custody of her son, Robbin Cupp. Mrs. Archer had a suit pending for divorce from James Archer at the time of her death, but if damages are recovered from the street car company he will, of course, get his share of the proceeds."

Joanna (JamaGenie@gmail.com) says, "Mrs. Emma ARCHER was the widow of my grandmother's uncle, Thomas P. CUPP. Their 14-yr-old daughter, Dovie Cupp, wasn't killed instantly as her mother was, but died several hours later after having both legs amputated.

If it tells you what kind of man James Archer was, mother and daughter were basically dummped into a grave at Summit View Cem before sundown the same day. No funeral, no relatives present, no grave marker of any kind.

Until 5 years ago, Summit View records only showed Emma and "an unnamed infant", buried in the same grave. They now know the "infant" was Emma and Tom's daughter Dovie.

The remaining child, son Robyn (with a "y") never got over losing Mom and sis on the same day. Don't know what happened to the settlement eventually paid by the street car company, only that Robyn worked as a servant in various homes until he was old enough to become a steamfitter in Tulsa."
