Linda, I really enjoyed the aviation photos of your father. He really made good use of his airplane. The TAT photo at the end is nice, too. I don't recognize the airport, but it isn't Waynoka. It might be Wichita.
~Sandie regarding Okie's story from Vol. 11 Iss. 13 titled UNTITLED

Yep, sounds like the ears will go up, the alert poses "on", and the claws will come out soon (tee hee) [more]...

Slow Summer Weekend

We do not have the heat and humidity that the citizens of Oklahoma and Kansas are feeling right now as they are soon to experience the "dog days" of summer.

With the dog days of summer comes rodeos! That reminds me... I need to pull together a full page ad for the Freedom rodeo program this year. I hope I still have time to get it in.

What with moving and settling in here, things have gotten pushed aside as we slowly make it through the remainder of July 2008.

Several of you have sent in names of the 1957 Neuman's boys choir picture we had last week. We thank you for that.

We hear that Oklahoma's gas prices have started to take a downward turn. Our gas prices in Bayfield, Colorado, meanwhile are hanging around $4.30.9 while Oklahoma is down below the $4 mark. Do you Okie's know how lucky you are?

Duchess Welcomes Willie

It is always good to hear from another four-legged creature, such as yourself. I guess it has been awhile since this Pug, Duchess, has written a few lines, huh?

First of all... I want to wish Willie a belated happy birthday! You can read Kenneth's story of him and Willie "Growing Up In Oklahoma."

Since we have moved into our new home, that NW Okie keeps an eye on me so I don't roam outside my boundaries. Back at the old place I could lay under the parked pickup in the shade and watch the birds and wildlife flitter outside.

NW Okie says we live to close to the street for me to lay under my pickup in the shade. I guess she is right, though. She is just looking out after us four-legged members of the family.

I do get my exercise, though, when I climb the slope out in our new backyard. Boy! Howdy! Coming down the slope is a lot faster than going up!

Again.. Willie, welcome to the Okielegacy family and thanks for sharing another great story with Kenneth about growing up in Oklahoma. Happy Birthday, Willie!

Garfield County, OK Placenames

Garfield Co. placenames -- Someone wrote asking about Zangwill in Garfield County, Oklahoma. This is what I found in my Garfield County history book: "Zangwill -- Once a post office west of Bison, named for an English author, Israel Zangwill. In Sec. 16-17, twp. 20N, R8W, it operated from 1897 to 1905."

Growing Up In Oklahoma With Willie

We are in the process of taking down Kenneth Updike's stories and ramblings of "Growing Up In Oklahoma" because Kenneth asked us, "To remove all of my previous writings to you about my Ramblins. Personal stories that I told you and your readers. My Son has had all of my writings, and notes copyrighted so that we can put them in a book or booklet. His idea. I really have no objections to this, but he insists we can be viewed by more people. I leave it up to him. Thanks for your help in the past, and I still read your Okie Legacy nearly every week."

If you find some of Kenneth's Ramblings that I have missed, Please email me the link with Vol. and Iss. numbers so that this NW Okie can remove them. Thanks for your help!

1957 Neuman's Boys Choir of Alva, OK

So far... those recognized in this 1957 Neuman's Boys Choir are: Johnny Gruber, Jerry Sneary, and Gene Smith.

Another reader wrote: "Besides Tom Gruber, I recognize some of the other choir members as Rudy Tanner, Randy Rauh, Darrel McDaniel, Jerry Sneary, Ernest Otte, Joe Higgenbotham, Eddie Warrick, John Gruber and Gary Tanner."

Still... another reader sent in these names: Johnny Jones, Buddy Sams, Mike Vanbuskirk, Carman Southern." --

Happy Birthday, Willie!

LOL! Your website isn't near big enough for me to write about Willie. Why he's my right hand man, my confidant, and most of all my best friend. I will try to put something together for you. His Birthday is July 17, and he will be three years old. (that's 21 in human years.) The pup becomes a man!" -- Ken

OK Gas Prices Drop Again

July 19, 08 -- "Conoco/Phillips gas prices dropped again today .... down to $3.66.9 now and it wouldn't surprise me to see them go down again Monday because of the celebration with KOCO-5 TV coming to town.

Again I forgot to bring the newspaper home (it has the schedule of activities) but I noted that music will be playing most of the evening with at least 3 bands performing and a gospel music group or two along with the before mentioned wrestling exhibition from the two champions. I think the pet parade (for the kids to win cash prizes besides being given 50-cent pieces just for being there) will be right at 6 PM to be shown live of TV.

Channel 5 will broadcast both their 5 PM and 6 PM newscasts live from our courthouse square. They're due to arrive at 10 AM and will tour the Anheuser-Busch facility, Charles Machine Works (the Ditch Witch plant), the Cherokee Strip Museum, J Z Systems, where they cut metal up to 1/2" thick (perhaps even thicker) with high pressure jet-streams of water, besides checking out our downtown square again. I would guess they might check out the new jail that's almost ready for business, and perhaps the new school that's under construction. Of course I'll know more next week.

Here in Perry, Oklahoma, the weather has been in the 'cool' 70s at night but upper 90s in daytime the past few days with heavy clouds at times providing too much humidity. With this celebration coming up Monday, everyone (including me) is also cutting grass and that's giving my grass and weed allergies fits. While mowing at my place of business, I disturbed a nest of tiny cottontail bunnies and when they (unexpectedly) suddenly scattered in several directions, my mower accidentally hit one before I could stop. I had to feed that one to the cats.

I watched tonight's TV news long enough to learn that gas prices are falling all over the state and in OKC, they're down to $3.35 at some stations!" -- Roy

Correction to OkieLegacy Murder Mystery

Correction to OkieLegacy Mabel Oakes Murder Mystery -- "Juror James Rhudy should be James Winton Rhudy (not James A. Rhudy). The 18-year old daughter mentioned in the text was my grandmother, Lottie Melissa Rhudy Brown. James Winton Rhudy and Mary Jane Shepard Rhudy homesteaded section 18, 21 north township, range 22-W in Woodward County. (So the other information in the text seems accurate.) My father owns the land that James and Mary Jane willed to Lottie." -- Cathy Barr - Email: cbarr@ucmo.edu

OK Map Circa 1900 & Cache Creek

"Cache Creek and its many tributaries is shown on the map of Oklahoma and Indian Territories circa 1900. I see it (and West Cache) extending from the area about 40 miles north of the military reservation at Fort Sill in the Kiowa and Comanche counties on down to where they join Deep Red Run which feeds into the Red River near the southeast corner of what is now Cotton County. It is NOT near Altus. That one was the "Elk". The Cache probably feeds what is now known as Lake Ellsworth and one of its tributaries (I think) would also feed Lake Lawtonka. The Cache is also found on this 1928 map of Oklahoma Highways." Roy
