"kero"... hummmm... that could be it! Thanks, James.
~NW Okie regarding Okie's story from Vol. 10 Iss. 13 titled UNTITLED

Here is that Durango Herald News article re: Vallecito’s future resembles past that appeared August 26, 2005, written by Lisa Meerts-Brandsma | Herald Staff Writer -- "Lifestyle needs competed with economic needs Thursday night as residents and county planners discussed whether to drop allowable building densities on an acre of land from two units to one in the Vallecito District Land Use Plan.... Settlin' In At Snail Speed

Dial-up Internet and moving sucks! AND ... This NW Okie has been on 'braodband withdrawal' for the last week. At least until Saturday afternoon when we got our satellite broadband setup ... AND ... That is crawling along at snail speed this holiday weekend.

Between moving, unpacking and settling in our new abode, we have not been online much this week for researching Oklahoma legacies. This week's newsletter will be a somewhat short and sweet. If the images don't show up, it is because I am experiencing snail speed and have not gotten them uploaded to the site yet.

BUT... we are including the much demanded "Growing Up In Oklahoma" written by Kenneth Updike.

Well! We finally finished packing, loading, moving, unloading and unpacking a few things into our new residence North of Bayfield, Colorado, in the mountain areas of Forest Lakes. This is a complete change from the rural valley area that we moved from. For instance, Bears have been sighted in this area, so you do NOT want to leave garbage setting out overnight.

The photo to the left is a snapshot taken off of our patio, looking up the mountain. The first morning we wokeup around 5:30 a.m. to watch a deer and its young walk across our backyard slope. I have not seen any bears yet, but... I'm keeping alert!

Stars & Stripes Forever

Stars & Stripes Forever (midi)
Sousa's Stars And Stripes Forever is the national march of the USA, written by John Philip Sousa on Christmas Day in 1896.

Hope you all had a great 4th of July celebration and took some pictures of the fireworks and happenings in your area for keepsakes for future generations.

Our youngest son, Robert, came up to the mountains to help us move and took some movie shots of the 4th of July fireworks that they had up at Vallecito Lake, Colorado, in the San Juan National Forest. We will be putting those up at our OkieLegacy - YouTube site later ... when we can get them uploaded.

Growing Up In Oklahoma & Phillips, TX

We are in the process of taking down Kenneth Updike's stories and ramblings of "Growing Up In Oklahoma" because Kenneth asked us, "To remove all of my previous writings to you about my Ramblins. Personal stories that I told you and your readers. My Son has had all of my writings, and notes copyrighted so that we can put them in a book or booklet. His idea. I really have no objections to this, but he insists we can be viewed by more people. I leave it up to him. Thanks for your help in the past, and I still read your Okie Legacy nearly every week."

If you find some of Kenneth's Ramblings that I have missed, Please email me the link with Vol. and Iss. numbers so that this NW Okie can remove them. Thanks for your help!

Catalpa (Catawba) Tree

"Linda, I moved South in 1949 and I can testify about how good fish bait Catawba caterpillars are. There is one slight turn off to using them though. To prepare them to be put on the hook you have to pull their heads off and then using (usually a kitchen match stick) turn them wrong side out to expose their innards. That is what the fish are crazy about. I have caught as many a six good sized bream with just one worm." -- Bill Barker -

Clymer & Oklahoma

"Are you related to Ms. Clymer from Ponca City? I think her first name was Lottie. My aunt, mother and uncles had her for 6th grade. I missed having her only because she retired when I was in 5th grade. She taught forever at Jefferson Elementary School in Ponca. She has family, but I'm not sure of their names. I don't think she ever married." -- Laurie Pettay - Email: laurie_pettay@msn.com - OkieLegacy Comment

1960 Politics - McGill & Edmondson Battle

"In the Jim Lange cartoon you referred to, I believe that Governor Edmonson was at the front door with a bunch of flowers in his hand and Pat Malloy standing behind him while Gene was eloping with Miss Oklahoma Democratic Party down the ladder from her bedroom window." -- SBW - OkieLegacy Comment

Oklahoma Bucks National Average

"It has been noted recently that our state of Oklahoma has been above the national "average" in new jobs for 3 years in a row (gaining by 51% this year alone), and considerably above the national average in "home values" (up again this year).

New jobs continue to open up because of additional factories being built (such as the new automobile factory in southern Oklahoma, and the proposed new refinery to be built in Cushing, which is the petroleum pipeline "capital" of the U.S., with a newer pipeline being presently constructed to bring MORE crude oil from northern Canada.

Some of this is because I-40 (the border to border highway from the east coast to the west coast intersects with I-35 (the Canada to Mexico international highway) in Oklahoma City!

NOW we're even getting an NBA franchise with the purchase of the Seattle Sonics basketball team and moving them to the huge Ford Center in Bricktown (located on the Oklahoma River in OKC). It's a never ending improvement of our state's continued economy.

We have recently added the central distributorship (warehousing and distribution) for Anheuser-Busch products here in Perry, and there's also a new OPEN arena just opened up near it (for rodeo's, etc.). We're still moving forward while some states are either stagnate or moving backward (in jobs lost, etc.). It's a great time to be living here and watching the progress that's being made." -- Roy K.
