14 miles west of Alva, or the turnoff to go to Waynoka. Frank McMurphy had a welding shop and they had a small candy store in the house at one time, It is all gone now but they have hook=ups for the Oil well guys to set up camp. Cora had a Nazarene Church in the 50's, and at one time Kenneth Benningfields runa store there. Ma Beck ran astore for years on the South sideof the road known as Whitehorse. Clyde Raders rana welding shop and store on the North side of the road at Teagarden, Oklahoma. THEN IN THE LATE 40'S and early 50's Ralph Wadkins ran a store and Teagarden Postoffice in his home. At the turnoff to Freedom there was a convience store run by several differnt people over the years. John and Ella Woods, Mary Snow, Carl Morehart and others. Then it was rebuilt on the west side and has been run by many people. At one time there was a dance hall and resturant at Camp Houston. Further west is an old store ran by Mrs Wagner, on farther West years ago was a store also known as Hilltop. On the turnoff going to Coldwater, Kansas there is a store, mind you these are all in Woods County, Oklahoma. Some of these stores go back to the 30's or earlier. Francis R. Melkus ~Francis R. Melkus 2012-08-20 22:48:47My grandmother lived in Cora as a child. When she was in her 80's my sister and aunt took her there to see if they could find anything. Grandma jumped out of the car, ran across the field and climbed up on a crumbling foundation wall. Like a child, she dug in the dirt around the foundations and was thrilled with an old broken piece of dish. I wish I could have been there. They were also able to find a tiny cemetery with Showalter family graves. There are many Ghost towns in Alfalfa Co., Ok. Ashley-which is 9 miles east of Alva, Ok has only the grain elevator left of the town. Short Springs has only the springs left. It is 10 miles east and 1/2 south of Alva. Ingersoll is 3 miles north and 2 1/2 east of Cherokee has only 4 businesses left and several empty buildings. There are also many towns laid out in early 1900's that now are hard to find but if you are interested, please send me your address and I will mail you a drawing. ~Ila Wessels 2006-08-21 10:38:29
The Bartlesville History Muesum has a book about Oklahoma Ghost TOwns. I am sure there is no one there to do research for you buit I would be happy to do look-ups for you if you would like. Maybe there is a simular book in your area. ~Debbie Neece 2006-08-19 19:42:23
I love this information on the ghost towns. I am a student photographer in oklahoma city and I am looking for ghost towns in oklahoma to take pictures of. Do you have any other information on any ghost towns or know of somewhere good to look. I've checked a lot of sites and end up in a town that is still quite inhabited. Not that some of these haven't been interesting, but really I want to find some towns that actually abandoned. ~brett ludlow 2006-08-14 06:19:31
