Greenbrier College for Women
"Greenbrier College for Women was never a 'finishing school' ... whatever that is. In 1961, it was a two year preparatory school and junior college, with junior and senior highschool students as freshmen and sophomores at Greenbrier. It was established, for the purpose of educating young women, on 7 Apr 1858 by an act passed by the Virginia General Assembly which incorporated it as the Lewisburg Female Institute Company in Lewisburg, Greenbrier County.

Diane - Do you remember a Physical Ed teacher that went by Kay or Katie? I remember my mother always speaking of her as she remained close to her for many years. A Greenbrier Alumnae happened on this site. I am so glad. My name is Diane 'Plasman Willis. I am President of the Alumnae Association and am looking for Greenbrier Alumane that attended Greenbrier College. Currently we have 800 in our Alumnae directory. Martha Dean Bell, I did not know your Mom. I graduated in '63. But, I do have the year books from her years. I have seen her brick. Who was your Dad's younger sister?? My grandmother attended the Greenbriar Institute in 1903-1905. She later went on to become a nurse before marryiong my grandfather, in 1912. Her name was Katherine Ingles, and she married William Palmer Hill, of Richmond. I have a stash of the letter she received between 1899 and 1906, and they include several letters from her first cousin, Margaret Trollinger, who started at Hollins Institute at the same time. Kit, as she was called, was a descendant of Mary Draper Ingles, and her family home was on the New River in what is now Pulaski County. My mom attended GCW (as she called it) for 3 years, and always counted it as one of the happiest times in her life. She also taught there as an adult (one of her students was my dad's youngest sister.) My dad attended GMS (also, what he called it) instead of the public high school, and although he wasn't a stellar student, it did help him get into Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now called Virginia Tech-my parents both called it VPI; my dad still does.) I have never had the opportunity to visit the campuses, although my dad and aunt purchased a brick on the walkway at West Virginia Carnegie Hall as a memorial to her. If you get a chance to look, her name was Dean Frazier Bell. It has the date of her birth and the date of her death: May 20, 1934 - January 8, 1998. ~Martha Dean Bell 2007-10-24 16:06:12
"Dorothy" may sound like a flapper and I'm sure she would have been had she been born in a timely manner, but, alas, she went to Greenbrier almost 40 years past the era. "Dorthy" was too young to be a beatnik, too old to be a hippie, but was a nonconformist rebel, just what Greenbrier College for Women needed in its mix in 1960-61. Dorothy sounds like a flapper. More power to her. My mother went to Greenbrier. She remembered eating watercress& cucumber & butter sandwiches. She was born in 1909, so was probably there 1926, 27. Her name was Blanche Baker from New Albany, IN. Nickname "Bake" ~Gregg Shope 2006-08-02 20:40:16
