It All Began Here
This is what we woke up to this Wednesday morning, November 29, 2006. Sadie and NW Okie fed the waiting horses their morning supplemental rations, then they (horses, of course) galloped, trotted back down to the lower grass pasture for their grazing ritual. The snow didn't seem to bother the horses the least bit. From left to right, in the pasture: Nugget, Maggie and Doquoti (Dorthy).
The beginning of this week saw Winter making an early arrival through the Rockies and on into Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas before heading on East towards to New England.
Thursday Northwest Oklahomans were waking up to 4 inches of snow and more to blow in later this last Thursday morning. Sounds like the Central and Southern parts of Oklahoma ran into some icy weather before the snow started to fall. That ain't good!
For more of Alva, Oklahoma's Thursday snowstorm, see story below.

Alva's Snow Storm - 11/30/2006
The end of November 2006 made a dramatic exit from the State, Thursday, November 30, 2006. As you can partially see in this view of the Alva water tower on the west edge of town.
During the Thursday snowstorm that was blowing through Oklahoma, particularly around Perry, Oklahoma, one of our readers saw a guy riding a 3-wheeler up and down the street!
Roy says, "It's time to get out the sleds and play. That reminds me, I have a couple of them in my warehouse and this would be a good time to stick them in a display window FOR SALE!"
On this last Thursday Roy mentioned, "Alva's weather is worse than ours here in Perry, but we may get it yet. There were a few small snow flakes beginning about 7:30 to 8 A.M. but lots of wind, which started blowing hard yesterday (Wednesday) morning, and it's still about 30 to 40 mph. Then the snow became gradually heavier until there was a 'whiteout' about 10:15 A.M. BUT... now (at 11 A.M.) the flakes are tiny again and visibility is about 1-1/2 to 2 blocks (maximum)."
We also hear that it was quite a dramatic change from the 80 degrees they had just a couple of days before. All area schools and universities were closed (from southwest Oklahoma to northeast) for about a 50 mile strip diagonally, in the general direction of -- following the H. E. Bailey and Turner Turnpikes (I-44) right on up through southwest Missouri and towards Chicago.
We understand that the towns and cities to the south of Guthrie received freezing rain and sleet first. Several had lost power during this November 2006 snow storm with power going off several times through the night and thursday morning around Duncan, Oklahoma.
On Thursday, Roy was saying, "We're still expecting 4 to 6 inches of snow (total) out of this storm but some cities north of here and north of Tulsa are expecting (perhaps) 9 inches to 15 inches! If we had some hills to climb you could ski Oklahoma this time. Our wind chill may also reach 2 or 3 degrees but hasn't yet so far as I know."
Our Alva, OK, Maple Street Home - nwokielegacy We have stuck more Alva, Oklahoma snow pictures over at our NW OkieLegacy Webshots - 11/30/2006 Alva Snow Storm. In the middle of the backyard (our Alva Home on Maple Street) where it didn't drift the snow measured in at 6-inches. Around the the back porch of our Maple Street home, in Alva, where it tends to catch the drifts of blowing snow, it measured in at 25-inches.

Oklahoma Snow
Our snow is over (here in Perry, Ok.) for the time being and the sun is shining brightly (Dec. 1, 2006). Now where are my sun glasses? I don't like being snow-blind and the sun is shining brightly. That means that all this stuff is going to start melting again just as soon as it warms up a little. The drivers are already driving too fast and there are more vehicles on the streets than there were yesterday. Look out world, here we come again!
Officially, Perry had 9 inches of snow. Braman (due north, near the Kansas border) had 14 inches. And we had drifts because of the high winds. I didn't see any drifts more than about 2 foot but there must have been some thicker. It all started melting today (Dec. 1) and I saw streets almost clear again because the street crews were busy. Interstate highway 44 was closed west of OKC because of numerous wrecks, and then northeast of OKC towards Tulsa was closed overnight because it was impassable. Now it's been closed again because of a refreeze which created a solid sheet of ice for miles. Even the professional semi-truck drivers can't navigate it. Perry's gas prices have remained the same at $2.12.9 since last week." -- Roy

Meadowlarks Greet the Morn'
We are in the process of taking down Kenneth Updike's stories and ramblings of "Growing Up In Oklahoma" because Kenneth asked us, "To remove all of my previous writings to you about my Ramblins. Personal stories that I told you and your readers. My Son has had all of my writings, and notes copyrighted so that we can put them in a book or booklet. His idea. I really have no objections to this, but he insists we can be viewed by more people. I leave it up to him. Thanks for your help in the past, and I still read your Okie Legacy nearly every week."
If you find some of Kenneth's Ramblings that I have missed, Please email me the link with Vol. and Iss. numbers so that this NW Okie can remove them. Thanks for your help!

Magill from Ahoghill, Co. Antrim
My MAGILL line... I have it fairly well researched here in the US, but would like to find out more about my Irish ancestry.
My family of Hugh MAGILL (b. 1803), wife Elizabeth RAINEY (b. 1807), lived in the area of Ahoghill Galgorm Parks, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
They had, at least, the following children:
1.William John MAGILL, b. 1825, Baptized 1st Ballymena Pres. Church, married Elizabeth WALLACE. They had a daughter Isabella, b. abt. 1847 who died 1847 on the ship Berlin enroute to Philadelphia, PA. They settled in Philadelphia, PA where all their other children were born.
2. David MAGILL, emigrated to US, through Philadelphia, then New Orleans in abt. 1847. Settled and married in Swanwick, Perry Co., IL.
3. Probably a daughter, Elizabeth MAGILL, b. abt. 1823. She is found living with the family of William John MAGILL & Elizabeth (WALLACE) MAGILL in the 1850 Philadelphia, PA census.
If anyone is researching MAGILL family in the Ahoghill area, or has any knowledge of this area that might help me, I would really appreciate it. Thanks." -- Lyn Magill-Hoch - Email: LynMhere@aol.com

More HURT Legacy Info
"I have been doing some research with the assistance of Aida Kraus and Lavrentiy Krupniak. The location of the origin in Bohemia for the HURT family is misrepresented. The village is Ujezdec. There are 10 villages by this name so to clarify which village it should be written thus: Village of Ujezdec, County Seat Caslav, Region of Kutna Hora. You can find a map showing all three locations Click Here. It is located SE of Praha (Prague).
I have one copy of the Hurt marriages from Nebraska and will receive the others soon. The surnames on this document are written phonetically not as they would be written in Czech or Polish language. For example: Anton C. Hurt married Cealia Przybyszewska. The marriage record has her name written Shebeska. In the Polish language Shebeska is how you would pronounce her last name. Check it out with a Polish pronunciation guide, I did. I also uploaded a copy of the marriage record to the Bohemia message board at Rootsweb.com if you would like to judge for yourself.
Mary Mrkvicka's surname appears to be Mrhvetska which would be the correct pronunciation of her surname. The first 'k' is almost silent and the r is rolled, the c is sounded as ts.
When I receive the other marriage records I will let you know if the mother's surname is recorded the same way.
Do you have a current email address for Jeanine Baringer? I found her family through the census at Ancestry.com from 1900 - 1920 I also found the death records of Anton and Cealia Hurt plus their sons. I think I found one daugter. I am not sure about the other three girls. Let me know if you wish to add this to your website and I will type it up. Your Cousin." -- Kathleen Louthan Gregory - Email: kate_31758@hotmail.com

A Book for Obsolete Children
Why Computers Sometimes Crash! by Dr. Seuss.(Read this to yourself aloud - it's great!)
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port, and the bus is interrupted at a very last resort, and the access of the memory makes your floppy disk abort, then the socket packet pocket has an error to report.
If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, and the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash, and your data is corrupted 'cause the index doesn't hash, then your situation's hopeless and your system's gonna crash!
If the label on the cable on the table at your house, says the network is connected to the button on your mouse, but your packets want to tunnel to another protocol, that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall......
And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss, so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse; then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang, 'cuz sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang.
When the copy on your floppy's getting sloppy in the disk, and the macro code instructions cause unnecessary risk, then you'll have to flash the memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM, and then quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your Mom!
Well, that certainly clears things up for me. How about you?
Thank you, Bill Gates, for bringing all this into our lives.

How to FWD Emails
Great Information. We can all learn something from this! Do you really know how to forward e-mails? This was written by a system administrator for a corporate system. It is an excellent message that ABSOLUTELY applies to ALL of us who send e-mails. Please read the shortletter below...
Do you really know how to forward e-mails? 50% of us do; 50% DO NOT. Do you wonder why you get viruses or junk mail (Spam)? Do you hate it? Every time you forward an e-mail there is information left over from the people who got the message before you and sent it to you, namely their e-mail addresses and names.
As the messages get forwarded along, the list of addresses builds, and builds, and builds. All it takes is for some poor sap to get a virus, and his or her computer can send that virus to every e-mail address that has come across their computer. Or, someone can take all of those addresses and send junk mail to them or sell them to spammers in the hopes that you will go to the site and they will make five cents for each hit that they sell. That's right, all of that inconvenience over a nickel and because someone included visible email addresses in their forwarded message!
How do you stop it? Well, there are a few easy steps:
- (1) When you Forward an e-mail, DELETE all of the other addresses that appear in the body of the message (at the top). That's right, DELETE them. Highlight them and delete them or backspace them or cut them - whatever it is you know how to do. It only takes a second. You MUST click the "Forward" button first though and then you will have full editing capabilities for the body and headers of the message. If you don't click on "Forward" first, you won't be able to edit the message at all.
- (2) Whenever you send an e-mail to more than one person, do NOT use the To:or CC: columns for adding e-mail address. Always use the BCC: (Blind Carbon Copy) column for listing the e-mail addresses. This way the people you send to only see their own e-mail address and no one else's. If you don't see your BCC: option, click on where it says To: and your address list will appear. Highlight the address and choose BCC: and that's it, it's that easy. Or click on view and click on all headers you will then have the bcc: column. When you send to BCC: your message will automatically say "Undisclosed Recipients" in the "TO:" field of the people who receive it, providing extra security and privacy to all the people in your Address Book.
- (3) Remove any "FW:" in the subject line. You can re-name the subject if you wish or even correct spelling.
- (4) ALWAYS hit your Forward button from the actual e-mail you are reading. Ever get those e-mails that you have to open 10 FW: pages to read the one page with the information on it? By Forwarding from the actual, final page you wish someone to view, you stop them from having to open many e-mails just to see what you sent. (Many people will not open all those emails for fear of getting a virus so your message may go unread.)
Have you ever gotten an email that is a petition? It states a position and asks you to add your name and address and to Forward it to a number of people or your entire Address Book. The email can be Forwarded on and on and can collect thousands of names and email addresses.
FACT: The completed petition is actually worth a couple of bucks to a professional spammer because of the wealth of valid names and email addresses contained therein. If you want to support the petition, send it as your own personal letter to the intended recipient(s). Your position may carry more weight as a personal letter than a laundry list of names and email address on a petition - and, again, you will protect the privacy of those in your Address Book and provide them additional security against viruses and spammers.
So please, in the future, let's stop the junk mail and the viruses by working together and respecting the privacy and security of one another.

Early in the mornings they would march the Germans from the train station to the POW camp. My sister and I would set and watch as they marched by. I also went with my dad to deliver gasoline to the camp. Sometimes I could ride in with him and other times they made me wait at the guard house. I remember people getting the pictures from the buildings when they were being torn down. Some were very good artist. I also went to the Horace Mann school at the college. I have enjoyed your site very much."
