Weather Dog Report...
We know that "Ground Hog Day" is just around the corner and January is coming to an end. BUT...
These "Weather Dogs" are here to report of a siting of Winter showing itself mid-week (Wednesday, January 25, 2006) this week. Here in the San Juan Valley of SW Colorado we received anywhere from 3 to 4 inches of that wet, fluffy, white snow. While the higher elevations received close to 7 inches of snow... FINALLY!
The picture on the left was taken Wednesday afternoon, January 25, 2006. The picture on the right was taken 27 January 2006, Friday, looking towards the Southwest from our driveway.
We did take a trip up to Vallecito area to see what snow they had accumulated this week. Comparing it to past snows, it was like the November snowfalls they experience during Thanksgiving. That's how far behind we are for the norm around here.
We hear the farmers and ranchers in NW Oklahoma are needing some much needed moisture and rain for their wheat crops and ponds. It is extremely dry there ... AND ... across all of Oklahoma. Maybe this weekend will give them a chance for some of that rain... or snow!
AND... listening to the weather channel, it looks like Sunday, Monday may bring another chance for some rain, snow in the NW parts of USA.

Last Week's Memory Joggers...
Thanks to all who left comments in last week's ezine. We learned a lot!
For instance, we learned that Joel Glenn was a custodian at Shockley hall when it was a boys dorm and stayed with it after it became a girls dorm. Joel was also the first custodian at Oklahoma Hall, on Northwesetern's campus (Alva, Oklahoma) until that women's dorm closed.
From reading last week's comments concerning gas prices across America, it sounds like North Carolina's gas prices are hanging in there with our gas prices here in SW Colorado. AND... Oklahoma, you aren't the lowest gas prices out there. Oregon showed up with about 10-cents lower than yours. That does surprise this writer.
Did you know that the Runnymede Community in Harper County, Kansas had a Runnymede Depot? It now resides in the "Old Town" of Wichita, Kansas. We truely are inter-connected, aren't we!

The Okie Legacy...
We were curious to see if anyone out there has tried our "OkieLegacy Archive" Search? What interesting items have you found?
We have been slowly inputting the back issues of our ezine/newsletter archives into our database. We are up to Vol. 6, Iss. 15 to this date. All of Vol. 7 and it's issues have been added. Hopefully, we can finish up Vol. 6 in a few weeks -- then start inputting Vol. 5.
If you haven't already noticed under the "comments" of each feature, the OkieLegacy no longer shows links/hyperlinks to your email addresses on past and future comment submissions. We value you privacy from spammers harvesting your emails.
As a matter of fact... our OkieLegacy Subscriber mailing list is stored in a "MS Access" subscribers database on our website -- protected from unauthorized viewers.
When we publish our newsletter/ezine each Saturday, our subscriber database automatically sends an email to all subscribers on the mailing list via our email address - postmaster@okielegacy.org.
We are still having trouble with those subscribers who have their email with "Pioneer (pldi.net) Internet." It seems "Pioneer" doesn't let any of our emails get through to our subscribers via our database mailing list using our email - postmaster@okielegacy.org. We have to send those emails out the "OLD" way ... with our "Aureate Groupmail" email software. One of these days we will get that problem worked out, also! Hopefully!

We Are Inter-connected On the Prairie...
"I wanted to add that a number of years ago the Prairie Connection was one of the first publications to publish an article by Dale Brown of her hopes and dreams for the Restoration of the Runnymede Hotel. Even though she was ill, she came to Harper and we spent a long time talking as she showed me her book of historic documentation and plans. It, of course, was
moved from Harper County on rollers a century ago. I am sorry that no one in Alva bothered to keep us informed of events since it was so much a part of our heritage, too. AND... I am sure some successful fundraising could have been done in this community for its restoration, if they had only asked.
I wish that Dale was alive to see the fruits of her labors.
I also wish Agnes Nye, Harper, was still alive to see the fruits of her labors, too, for it was her incessant promoting of Runnymede and Harper
County history that made us all aware of the early settlement, way back in the 50s and 60s when everyone thought she was 'kinda crazy' wasting her time on stuff like that. She also made a painting of how the settlement probably looked.
The Runnymede Depot was sold and moved to Wichita a few years ago and sits in Old Town, on the north side of Douglas.
And as luck would have it, just this week someone from Oklahoma City gave The Balmer Fund a donation of 'yard sale items' and in it was a tape recording of Agnes on Runnymede history! And I ran into Dean Patterson in Nescatunga this week and learned for the first time that his father was an engineer on
the Orient and of course, made stops at the Runnymede Depot.
Dean has been invited to share his railroad and countless other stories at our Second Friday, Women's Voices oral history recording session at the Prairie Arts Theatre. (Yes, we let men record their stories, too, if they
are nice!) That is the Second Friday, February 10th, 6:30 PM at the former Harper Movie Theatre, $5 admission. Concessions available for fundraising. For more informationContact: wepreserve@balmerfund.org
Such a small, small world! What a joy to find out how we are all inter-connected, and that there are still people who care enough to help
preserve what is left of our prairie heritage. By cooperating, we can do amazing things!" -- Rosalea Hostetle, The Balmer Fund/Prairie Connection - Email: wepreserve@balmerfund.org

Charles Schultz's Philosophy...
The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the "Peanuts" comic strip. You don't have to actually answer the questions. Just read the e-mail straight through, and you'll get the point.
1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winner for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.
How did you do?
The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.
Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
Easier?
The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.
"Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. -- (Charles Schultz)"

Perry, OK Gas Prices...
"They're trying to mess with our minds here in Perry, Oklahoma again. All the gas stations went to $2.24.9 for a couple of days and then yesterday they lowered them to $2.22.9 and today the Conoco station dropped to $2.19.9 and the independent (which I think still pumps Phillips 66) has dropped to $2.17.9!"

ATSF Runnymede, KS Depot...
"The Kansas City Mexico & Orient built several 16x36 standard depots along its main line in Kansas in the early 1900's, but Runnymede is the only known survivor. The most noticeable difference between this and the 16x40 standard represented by Milton, KS is the pointed bay window. Following retirement in 1951, Runnymede found its way to Wichita, where it served for a while as a restaurant. " -- atsf.railfan.net/depots/runnymede.html
