Linda, Love your site. I am again looking for info on the Pittman,Osborn spelling variations and Shaffer Family's of Alva,Ok or near by. Can anyone look up any street names they lived on with address [more]...
~Victoria J Glover regarding Okie's story from Vol. 10 Iss. 30 titled UNTITLED

Speaking of theaters--keep you eye on the old Ranger Theater in Alva. It just changed hands and the new owners have restoration in mind. The theater opened in 1939 and showed only westerns. Location is on the north side of the square north of the Post Office.

SW Colorado Board of Directors (BOD)

Since waltzing across Texas, Oklahoma and back to the cool climate of southwest Colorado, we have been spending some much needed time with our horses. We have haltered our 3-year-old paint (Doquoti) and Maggie (yearling) and hitching them to the hitching post and leading them around the corral and pasture.

This last Thursday we even caught our Pug horse trying to lead Maggie by the lead rope. Maggie stood there calmly watching intently as this little, black Pug (Sadie) helped out with the morning chores. Meanwhile... Nugget is busy sucking up the scattered oats/barley/bran left from the early morning feeding. You can see some of those photos at our Vallecito Webshots - August 2006 Horses. The photo to the left shows our Southwest Board of Directors (BOD), from left to right: Sadie, Nugget and Doquoti.

We have had a few requests in our OkieLegacy Guestbook. Maybe someone out there might have some information and make another connection.

  • Jackie Wayman - EMAIL: shammahsbeanfield@htcomp.net - Jack is looking for a mental institution existing around 1900-1910 where his great-grandmother was sent and left to die. He vaguely remembers family talking about Ft.Sill and/or Supply. We are pretty sure that he is referring to Ft. Supply, but did Ft. Sill also have a mental hospital?
  • Richard Hovis - EMAIL: rhovis73103@yahoo.com - Richard is looking for location of Artesian well in the northwestern area. We believe that artesian well is the one located just west of the Great Salt Plains, on the south side of the state highway (64) that runs East of Alva, Oklahoma.
Well! As you can probably tell, we did not make it back to Freedom, Oklahoma this weekend for Freedom's Biggest Open Rodeo & Old Cowhand Reunion that started this Thursday, August 17, 2006 and runs through Saturday, August 19, 2006. Wish we could be there to get some photographs of the Old Cowhand, Freedom's Main Street and the crowds that tend to repopulate and fill this unique old west styled community on Main Street for their afternoon, staged shootout & bank robbery, which follows the Old Cowhand Reunion at noon in the Town Park with bar-b-que fixings. Saturday evening tops off the day at the Rodeo grounds North of Freedom, putting the finishing touches on the last three days of Freedom's Biggest Open Rodeo & Cowhand Reunion for another year. If anyone out there attending these festivities has a digital camera, we would love to have a copy of your photos to share in next weeks OkieLegacy Ezine & Tabloid. We will even give you your own "by-line."

Poetry From Cowboy Dentist

One of our readers writes, "I, just from the luck of a referral from a referral, happened upon a most excellent and patient dentist in Durango, with the heart of a cowboy and the soul of a poet, and learned that his roots were from Northwest Oklahoma stock. He shared a poem with me that he had written about his maternal grandfather, Coleman Griffin. I received his permission to have you publish this poem in your NW Okie Ezine." Thanks, Dr. Eich, for sharing your Cowboy Poetry with us all! This is a small world, isn't!

THE CIRCLE
I take this watch out of my vest, its shape, a circle, no doubt the best,
to set me thinkin' of time turned back to a bygone era in the West.

"CG" is stamped in script on gold, on this circle from the days of old;
Coleman Griffin wore it then, not knowin' what the future'd hold.

He was a cowboy in that age of forkin' broncs 'neath sky and sage,
In the Indian Nation, now Oklahoma, on the Sumter Ranch out west by Gage.

Little did he know when life was done, that his baby girl would have a son,
Who'd love the cowboy way of life: horses, cows, and old six-guns.

And pausing here at a shooting match, to check the time on his old watch,
I wonder if he somehow sees how the hands of time turned back a notch.

I also wonder if old Gramps knows that one great grandson also chose
To spend his summers wranglin' colts, keeping the circle from growing closed.

Yes, this circle seems to be complete, and now I see how history repeats,
As my son, Coleman takes the place of Grandpa Coleman in a saddle seat.

Yet I hope there'll be some other one to carry on 'til Kingdom comes:
That these hands of time keep turning 'round and the circle will go on and on. -- author: James Coleman Eich - Cowboy Dentist, Durango, Colorado

WWII - Nazi POW In America

On Thursday, August 17, 2006, the History International channel had a segment about the Nazi POWs In America during WWII. It was quite interesting to this NW Okie. About halfway through the piece it showed an old government film of the Alva (Oklahoma) WWII POW Nazilager camp with a brief mention of it's legacy in our own back yard. The old film strip showed an aerial view of the camp and POWs marching through the streets. If you go to the History International website -- click their "store" menu and/or do a search for "Nazi POWs In America" on their website, you will find where you can order a vcr or dvd of that showing. They mentioned camps in Alabama, Texas, Colorado, Alva Nazilager Camp in Oklahoma, and the train trip through Kansas and the Heartland to various camps. it was a very interesting story and to see the mention of Alva, Oklahoma's WWII POW camp was a big plus for our old neck of the Woods County.

You can read what the OkieLegacy has collected about the WWII POW camps in Oklahoma at this link - WWII POW Camps.

NEW Look for WWWPubCo

Our parent company, Warwick West Web Publishing Company (wwwPubCo) has been undergoing some modernization, renovating by our Louisiana Techie & Guru. We now have two domain names for wwwPubCo - wwwpubco.org & wwwpubco.com.

Our technical Guru says, "I am not sure how your visitors were responding to the new look and new features of the OkieLegacy Ezine, but they can now link to WWWPubCo.com to leave comments directly with the developers (or developer). I hope this can be a place where visitors might be able to give suggestions. I can't promise that I can implement all suggestions."

Our Louisiana Guru (developer & son) says, "The OkieLegacy member area is optional, and does not affect how the readers view the website now. By registering they would not have to type name in the comment box. I added it to the Tabloid section to test it. Members can register and now add all their surnames of their family -- Logon and add surnames. It even allows you to edit the surnames. The OkieLegacy Tabloid is thinking that we could capture surnames for each member and then find members who have the same surnames."

Some of you have reported that the NEW format for the OkieLegacy Tabloid is good. BUT... for those of you who still like the old format of the The OkieLegacy Ezine, it still exists. We want you to use either or both for awhile to give each a chance. After awhile, maybe you could give us a critique of the good and bad points of our little OkieLegacy Ezine, Tabloid format. We hope to hear from you all when you have had time to try both formats out and give us your feedback. Thanks for letting us come into your email inbox each weekend!

Do you have any other information on any ghost towns or know of somewhere good to look. I've checked a lot of sites and end up in a town that is still quite inhabited. Not that some of these haven''t been interesting, but really I want to find some towns that actually abandoned."

Pugs Reported As Thugs To Bayfield Marshall... "And all I have been up to waiting to start my new job is revamping and testing NEW features for The Okie Legacy (OkieLegacy Tabloid). Not all too exciting. No law enforcement involved, yet. Some of the features to test, try out at the OkieLegacy Tabloid includes a login area to capture where our visitors are from and allowing you to set preferences for the website. I added a feature that will allow you to ad and store all the surnames in your family. I would like to see if our visitors overlap surnames and build utilities to help connect them and our history. Try it out! I hope there only a few bugs to work out."

Great Wall of Los Angeles

"The Great Wall of Los Angeles -- This mural, titled The Great Wall of Los Angeles, is one of the most spectacular murals in LA. It portrays the history of California from pre-history to now. It is over half a mile long. More information here. The history is shown from the point of those who were here first, from those who built alifornia, from the working class, from non-Anglos. It was designed and painted primarily by students. working through SPARC. Their Official site has more info. Located in Valley Glen (formerly North Hollywood) on Coldwater Canyon between Oxnard and Burbank, it stretches for hundreds of yards in a flood control channel. Oddly, most people don't even know it's there. Each page has several photos, and starts with the most recent history first."

Frontier Spaces: No Man's Land

Frontier Status: No Man's Land: Life in the wide-open spaces - Tulsa World, written By SARA GANUS World Staff Writer - 8/13/2006

"Northwestern part of Oklahoma is state's sparsest area. No Man's Land. That's what Oklahoma's far western counties were called before statehood. A century later, the region is largely empty and getting emptier. The northwest corridor of Oklahoma is home to six counties -- Cimarron, Roger Mills, Beaver, Harper, Ellis and Dewey -- with such small population densities that the U.S. Census Bureau classifies them in its most remote category: Frontier status. That means there's six or fewer people per square mile. Census reports show the Oklahoma frontier counties reached their population peaks in the 1930s and have dwindled gradually since then, drying up like a dusty stream bed in the Oklahoma summer. But for some people, this frontier is home, and they couldn't care less about the opinions of folk from the more populous world....." -- Click link above to read more of the Tulsa World article.

Like Good Pizza?

"KERI'S BREAKFAST PIZZA (by - Keri Weuste) Makes 12 servings
1 package (8 regular or 6 large) refrigerated dough for crescent rolls
1 pound of ground sausage
12 ounces (3 cups) grated Monterey Jack or Colby Jack Cheese
2-3 Tbsp chopped green bell pepper (about 1/4 of a medium bell pepper)
4 large eggs
3/4 cup milk
1/2 tsp. dried oregano leaves
1/8 tsp. ground black pepper

1. Brown sausage, drain and set aside to cool.
2. Spray 9 X 13, baking pan with no-stick cooking spray. Unroll crescent rolls and press into pan to form crust. Go up the edge of the pan about -inch.
3. Sprinkle ground sausage evenly over crust, then top with grated cheese and green pepper.
4. Beat eggs and milk together and add oregano and pepper. Make sure when adding oregano that you awaken the flavor of the spice by rubbing it between your palms before putting into egg mixture.
5. Gently pour egg mixture over sausage and cheese.
6. Bake for 18-20 minutes at 375 or until eggs are set and edges are browned.
7. Allow baked pizza to rest for at least 10 minutes before cutting.

This recipe can be prepared the night before. Complete steps 1 thru 3 and cover baking pan with foil or plastic wrap. Prepare egg mixture and store in covered plastic container. Keep the sausage mixture and egg mixture separated until you are ready to bake. As oven is preheating, gently pour egg mixture over the breakfast pizza, then bake. This recipe is easy to increase for a crowd. Multiply 4 times to fill a sheet-cake-sized pan for 48 servings. When preparing 48 servings I use 18 eggs."

Americans - Embodiment of Human Spirit

"You probably missed it in the rush of news last week, but there was actually a report that someone in Pakistan had published in a newspaper an offer of a reward to anyone who killed an American, any American.

So an Australian dentist wrote an editorial the following day to let everyone know what an American is. So they would know when they found one. (Good one, mate!!!!).

"An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani or Afghan.

An American may also be a Comanche, Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, Seminole or one of the many other tribes known as native Americans.

An American is Christian, or he could be Jewish, or Buddhist, or Muslim. In fact, there are more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan. The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them chooses.

An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God.

An American lives in the most prosperous land in the history of the world. The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes the God given right of each person to the pursuit of happiness.

An American is generous. Americans have helped out just about every other nation in the world in their time of need, never asking a thing in return.

When Afghanistan was over-run by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country!

As of the morning of September 11, Americans had given more than any other nation to the poor in Afghanistan. Americans welcome the best of everything, the best products, the best books, the best music, the best food, the best services. But they also welcome the least.

The national symbol of America, The Statue of Liberty , welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed. These in fact are the people who built America.

Some of them were working in the Twin Towers the morning of September 11, 2001 earning a better life for their families. It's been told that the World Trade Center victims were from at least 30 different countries, cultures, and first languages, including those that aided and abetted the terrorists.

So you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did. So did General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao Tse-Tung, and other blood-thirsty tyrants in the world. But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself. Because... Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American." -- (written by Ed Peeples) & submitted by Steve

Oklahoma Gas Prices & Weather

"We finally got enough sprinkles through most of the night (after midnight) that my rain gauge here at home had 1/10" of water in it and the temperature right now (just after 8:30 AM) is 72 degrees. I've noticed too that gas prices have been slowly tumbling again. Monday morning the majors were at $2.86.9 for regular unleaded and yesterday (Tuesday) they came down some more to $2.79.9. Today (8/16/2006) the gasoline prices at the major stations in Perry have dropped back to $2.76.9 for unleaded regular." -- Roy

Weather in Oklahoma

We have heard what some have said about the Summer weather in Oklahoma, "Yes it is strange and what cracks me up maybe I get a sprinkle at my house but at my sons across town it might be a downpour for a bit."

BUT... It isn't just Oklahoma. It happens everywhere. Here's what others say about the weather, "Isn't it interesting, though, how the weather guys tell folks that it's storming where we are, and it ISN'T. A few nights ago a weather man was talking about the storms all over our county -- I stepped outside to see if I should bring the dog in, and found NO moisture at all. We never did get any that night. Today, there was a fine mist for about 10 minutes and that was all. It appeared that Ponca City was getting plenty of it too, and now you say that you didn't. They're not always right but I realize that they are relying on instruments that are located 60 to 100 miles away from the areas and even my 2 identical rain gauges 3 blocks apart frequently measure as much as 1/2" difference."

You might hear other Oklahomans saying, "We got a tad of rain last night and around 4 today we got a tad more... but sure need more then just tads. It all looks but never makes it our direction... guess we need to start doing some indian dances."

Here's what another said about the weather wizards doing their rain dances in Oklahoma, "Well, the weather wizards are doing their rain dance again and maybe it's going to work this time. Last night they were saying on all the TV channels that there were storms in our county. So I walked outside to see the rain and there wasn't any. No moisture and no lightning! Tonight they say there are huge storms all headed this way. I could see some lightning in the south and in the southwest; and there was a fine mist in the air. I felt the wind in my face so maybe we will get some of it this time. Just have to wait and see."

Mars & Earth - A Hoax

I didn't call the following to your attention when your last newsletter came out but I looked up the facts just the same and discovered that I was right. The red planet made that close appearance in 2003! Click This Link at www.nasa.gov -- Urban legends: True... in 2003. As About.com astronomy expert Nick Greene wrote at the time, "August of 2003 is a special time for scientists and amateur astronomers. Our red neighbor, Mars will move closer than it's been in 50,000 years. On August 27, 2003, the 'red planet' will be less than 55.76 million kilometers (34.65 million miles) away from the Earth.

Oddly enough, however, the same message made the rounds again in May 2005, and yet again in June 2006. Although clearly the same 'once in a lifetime' celestial event could not occur again so soon, the 2005 version may have seemed accurate at first glance due to announcements by astronomers earlier that year stating that the orbits of the Earth and Mars would draw closer together than usual during the month of October. The 2006 version is just plain false."
