Thanks to Linda I have found some great information on Camp Alva. I was a teen ager when the camp was there. i didn't realize what a impact the camp made on Alva and its citizens.
~Marty Myers regarding Okie's story from Vol. 11 Iss. 39 titled UNTITLED

I just checked my "Pioneer Footprints Across Woods County" history book to see if I could find any "bio" about the Share family, but came up empty in that department [more]...

NW Okie's Corner

Hello! My name is Sadie. I'm the little black pug puppy (almost 7 months now). That distinguished looking grey schnauzer on the right is my friend, Ruff.

Duchess has told me so much about Y'all. Duchess said I could fill-in for her this week, since she is kind of under the weather. She ate something the other day that didn't agree with her. We are not quite sure what, though. Anyway, we found a Vet open on Saturday and took her to the Vet this morning, because she had her tail uncurled, between her hind legs and just feeling yucky. So... While she is taking it easy this weekend, let this "little black pup" entertain you this week.

Remember this puppy picture of Duchess when she must have been almost 6-months old... or so? That picture was taken July 1, 2003, during the hot Summer, when the Wagner's were living in OKC. I am told that Duchess was small enough back then that she could skinny through the wrought iron patio fence. Duchess' escape lasted for a few hours into the late afternoon hours at the apartment complex. The NW Okie had "Wanted Posters" tacked all over the complex that hot Summer day. You couldn't get Duchess through the fence now, though.

I'm suppose to let some of you Oklahomans out there know that the cool front that passed your way towards the last half of the week was courtesy of us out west in SW Colorado and New Mexico. We hear you all were heating up into the mid-90's before the cool front came through. Then the temperatures dropped about 30-something degrees. That same front dropped over 2-inches of rain & graupel here in the SW Colorado valley where we live. That's alot for this high plains area... I am told!

The NW Okie says you all in Oklahoma are paying about 60-cents less for unleaded gas than she is in SW Colorado. This weekend we found Durango, Colorado gas prices at $2.859.

Uncle Bob's WWII V-mails...

The NW Okie got her Uncle Bob's (McGill) V-mail scanned and put up at NW Okie's Webshots - Uncle Bob's V-mail for those WWII enthusiasts out there. That NW Okie even found a 1938 Oklahoma Operator's license for Bob McGill. In October 22, 1942, we find Bob stationed in the Hawaiian Islands. January, 1945 he was in Belgium; February, 1945 he was in Holland; and April & May, 1945 we find Uncle Bob stationed in Germany with the 75th Div HQ APO451. Bob McGill in 1942 was a Leutenant; by April, 1945 he was a Captain; and by May, 1945 he was a Major. Most of the letters were written to his mother (Constance Warwick McGill) and his wife (Helen Soaper McGill). View/Write Comments (count 0)   |   Receive updates (0 subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe

Penny Postcard - Old Virginia Shoe Shop...

While we were digging through Uncle Bob's WWII memorabilia, we found this OLD penny postcard of an "Old Virginia Shoe Shop" that we thought some of your old postcard fanatics might enjoy. It reads: "Interior view of the Old Virginia Shoe Shop. Craddock Terry's Co.'s exhibit at the Jamestown Exposition. The old colored man, Alfred Leigh, was a slave belonging to Judge Thomas Leigh, of Halifax Co., Va. His wife belonged to Dr. Charles Craddock-Terry Co., who are the largest shoe manufacturers in the South, with three large factories at Lynchburg, Va. in which they manufacture the clebrated Longwear Shoes." Durant Unsolved Mystery (ca. 1914)...

I have a contact who is searching for information about a murder in Durant ca 1914. The victim was a 14-year-old girl named Pauline Amsel. I plan to send an email to the Bryan County Genealogical Society and ask for help. They should have copies of the Genealogy Quarterly in their facility for the years 1988-1990 where the article appeared that my contact learned about the Durant Unsolved Mystery). I just happened onto your magnificent site and thought I would try your avenue. You know how it goes, you just never know where a lead might come from! Thanks, again, and if you have any more ideas, please let me hear from you." -- Jeanne - EMAIL: jdodson@atlantic.net View/Write Comments (count 0)   |   Receive updates (0 subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe

WARWICK DNA Project...

"Linda, I didn't see any mention of the Warwick DNA Project - maybe I missed it. We've had one contributor but we need more. Any ideas on how to get people to help out. The more we get the better information we'll receive. It would be good to find somebody from the WARWICK's in England and that might come but for now we have to find people in this country. They have to be sons of sons of sons of Warwicks. Anyway - hope all is well with you all. let me know if you have any suggestions on how to get a larger pool. Thanks." -- Carolyn Scott in California - EMAIL: Mooloolaba@aol.com View/Write Comments (count 0)   |   Receive updates (0 subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe

The Harvest Gypsies - by Steinbeck...

"If one thinks that the Okie is a term for poor white trash then they simply need read The Harvet Gypsies to find the reality of how Americans shunned the hardworking, honest backbone of America. A born Californian - I am ashamed of the the behavior - My family orgins being Oklahoma and Arkansas - I have found myself identifying with the values and morals of this poor white trash class and find that they are actually the Gold of California and the Heart of America." -- Karen

Looking For Lookout On "Ask Jeeves"...

"Found you by Ask Jeeves! Looking for Lookout, Oklahoma! I enjoyed your site, and can't seem to get enough of it! I have kinfolk that is to be buried in Lookout Cemetery, and my husband and I were able to make the trip out to walk it all, drive the countryside. Very Beautiful, and breathe takin! I took several photos while we were there, and would more than happy share anything that I have taken. I would love to learn more of Lookout. I have several old homestead photos I would love to know who they belonged to in the Lookout area. I also have photos of the Coy Schoolhouse / church, and also a church / school house near Lookout Cemetery, but never learned the name of it. I also got photos in the Lookout Cemetery of (if anyone is interested in copies let me know):
Phillip George Uhl (infant); Dollie M. Wood; Virgil D. Wood; Vernon G. Wood; Henry Mershall (very hard to read); Floyd O. Readman; J. E. Readman (James Ellsworth Readman); Jackie Eugene Wood; Frankie E. Uhl; Phillip G. Uhl; E.G. and Sarah A. Castle; Sallie Chesnut; and some photos that are just unusual.

We were there looking for the Mitchell line (Martin Luther Mitchell was to be buried in Lookout). We were very surprised to find our Readman's there as well. Thanks for posting Lookout (Oklahoma)!!! I didn't think anyone knew of the town that once was! A place that is so beautiful, and so softly spoken! A true piece of pride." -- Nettie - Email: kingri@valuelinx.net

Gas Prices In Oklahoma...

"Last week I paid $2.28.9 at a station south of Ponca City, Ok. and gas has been $2.31.9 here in Perry, Ok. for the past couple of days. My son said he saw it at $2.15.9 at a station in Oklahoma City yesterday (October 15th). A newsman this evening was warning us that gas prices are getting ready to jump UP again within a few days. They just keep trying to spread doom and gloom don't they." -- Roy View/Write Comments (count 0)   |   Receive updates (0 subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe

This Time of Year In the Colorado Rockies...

"We got .47 inch of rain last night (Oct. 18, 2005) and .59" this morning (Oct. 19). The thunder rolled up and down this little valley last night as I lay in bed reading. At 10:00 a.m. today, there was still frost and ice and the rain left small ponds north of the house. The winds blew golden leaves out of the aspen trees and they've added a nice touch to the plantings under the south bridge tree. Weaselskin Creek is roaring, so we must have gotten quite a deluge north of the cabin. I just love this time of year." Finding Henry...

"Thanks for the info. Certainly remember Eva Glenn, worked at the Pix theater with her husband Carl. Her sister, Irene and I worked at the Alva Drive Inn for a couple of years, also. Her dad was a custodian at Northwestern. I have an Alva phone book, so will see if I can figure out if my phone book is recent enough to be of any use. Thanks again." -- Marvin View/Write Comments (count 0)   |   Receive updates (0 subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe

Looking For Henry's...

I have just read a letter from a CHRISTY (HENRY) COULSTON. She said her dad was Gail Henry. I am looking for MARVIN HENRY who was born about 1938. He went to school here in Alva with my sister, IRENE GLENN and brother, JIMMIE GLENN. He used to visit my dad and mom, JOEL and EVA GLENN for years. Can you give me their info." -- Eva Glenn Welch, Alva, OK View/Write Comments (count 0)   |   Receive updates (0 subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe

Vallecito Aspens In SW Colorado Rockies...

"Fall has been beautiful. We got our first snow (other than on the peaks) on Oct. 19 (2005) -- the rain of the night turned to snow by morning and melted with the sun. There are still some aspens hanging on -- the aspen photo showing the late afternoon aspens was taken yesterday just up the hill east from Helen's Store; Middle Mtn on Oct. 16." -- Marilyn View/Write Comments (count 0)   |   Receive updates (0 subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe

Woods County Courthouse - 22 Feb. 1919...

We found this Old Winter photo while going through some of Uncle Bob's WWII V-mail's. We can't remember if we had already shared it with you all before. BUT... if we have, then here it is again. When did they stop making, building courthouses with character like the one in the 1919 photo taken during the Winter of February 22nd? Duchess' Escape In Younger Days...

"Just thought you might get a laugh out of this... I was searching Google the other day for information on the 2 escape prisoners from Joseph Harp. I typed Oklahoma + escape and in the middle of the page (image search) was Duchess picture of her looking through the white bars of what appears to be a wrought iron gate painted white. I laughed -- thought poor baby... wanted and she didn't even do a thing. I've used your Okie site a lot, especially in search for info on my Dad Jack Beaman. His parents used to own the Beaman apartments in Waynoka, Oklahoma. Thanks for your emails and help." -- Nancy Eddy, displaced okie in Kansas View/Write Comments (count 0)   |   Receive updates (0 subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe
