On the Road Again...
Boy! Does that Oakie keep this Pug busy. Last Tuesday morning we were packing in SW Colorado for a road trip south -- all the way down to Odessa, Texas for a visit with Oakie's oldest son. We traveled over 707 miles from Ignacio, Colorado down hwy 550 to I25 and into Albuquerque by dinner time. We spent the night south of Albuquerque in a small community along I25 -- getting up Wednesday morning to head down towards Ruidoso, Trinity Site, Roswell, Artesia (New Mexico) in 60 degree weather most of the way. We made Odessa, Texas around 8pm Wednesday night. We sure did miss the cool, snowy weather of SW Colorado, though. BUT... we had a great visit with "The Family." Alva Adoption of 1965...In the mailbag corner below there is also a lady who is searching for her husband's biological parents. In August 19, 1965 at the Alva Hospital a Baby Boy Gates was born and put up for adoption. The lady's husband had always been told for years that his biological dad got killed, in a car accident in 1965. They do NOT want to interferre in anyone's lives, but would just like to find out more about the baby boy Gates that was put up for adoption. Can anyone help them? Does anyone out there know of anyone who might be able to shed some light on what became of Kenneth Root (17 years of age in 1941)? Trinity Site & Trinitites of New Mexcio...
"On the morning of July 16, 1945 at 5:29 a.m., the desolate peace of a remote New Mexican valley was incinerated by the fire of a powerful man-made star. ..... No more wars of spears and bludgeons, no quaint 'lines of fir' by brightly dressed troops. War was now a strange, new beast, identified by the fascinating, violet-hued mushroom cloud after a collection of the U.S. Army's most brilliant physicists detonated the first atomic bomb. A visit to this historic site in the middle of a beautiful but austere landscape, prophetically named Journey of Death (Jornada del Muerto) by 17th-century Spanish settlers, combines the severe gravity of history with one of the West's loneliest and most historically significant outposts. The Trinity Site lies isolated in the northern section of White Sands Missile Range about an hour and a half due south of Albuquerque......" -- Cyberwest Magazine - New Mexico's Trinity Site: A Pocketful of Trinitite Roswell UFO Crash - 1947...
".....Mac Brazel reported finding portions of a crashed UFO on his ranch. The sheriff of Chaves County passed this information along to officials at Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF) and an investigation was begun by Maj. Jesse Marcel, an intelligence officer. A press release was issued by RAAF about the flying saucer on July 8, 1947. The following day, the official story was changed by Army Air Force officials. (Both stories were reported in front page articles in the Roswell Daily Record.) This Roswell Daily Record web site lets you explore the various reports on what has been termed the "Roswell Incident," a subject that has generated many news reports, books and motion pictures..... " -- Roswell UFO Crash Huskey at Northwestern (1939-1943)..."Do you know or can you direct me to someone who might know if Northwestern Oklahoma State University at Alva has records of students from 1939 to 1943? Trying to find a given name for a HUSKEY who attended there and got his Medic training there prior to WWII. Any help at all would be appreciated. I tried writing to the Registry Office at NWOSU, also. I'm still hoping to get an answer from them, but It's been several weeks so I've about given up. I could be wrong about the years, it was second-hand information to me. I suppose it's possible that this fellow could have been at NWOSU up until 1942 or so. If you have any ideas, please let me know. Do you know if county schools kept any kind of graduation records in those years? Alva is the town there at NWOSU, but I don't know if this guy attended that particular school. Thanks much!" -- Wayne Huskey, Scottsville, VA - Email: hotwirehuskey@earthlink.net View/Write Comments (count 0) | Receive updates (0 subscribers) | Unsubscribe Enjoyed OkieLegacy Website & Castle on the Hill..."Linda, I enjoyed your website. You might try contacting the Nowata Historical Museum and ask for the old map that Herb Crouch and someone else did up about the area. Herb also wrote a small book of area people and events that corresponds with the map. Bob Rogers, outlaw, was homesteaded near there. Did he bury a treasure of robbed goods? I don't know if the map and book will tell you what you are seeking, but worth the havi... both of them. My Grandfather lived in Childers, near Twin Bridges. His mother, arah 'Granni' Martin, had a home there. If you have any info on that homestead, or pictures, I'd be interested. Have been trying to locate a picture. All of the Martin's lived in the Childers and now, ghost town, Ruby area. There is a Martin cemetery there, also.
