The outhouses and benches north of the Orion cemetary are there because there used to be a program held there each "decoration day" with local talent performing. I was raised 1 mile south of the cemetary and the cemetary was a gathering place every year on that day.

I remember seeing that exact same view during my several camper vacations spent in the campground at the end of that road [more]...

NW Okie's Corner

We just found out this last week that some of you haven't been getting your issues of "The Okie Legacy." AND... Some of you that have missed issues have found the OkieLegacy Archives. AND... Some have received the last issue, BUT... have missed some in the past few weeks. We are NOT sure what is going on here, because you are still on the mailing list and none of those we have sent out have bounced back this way. Are they lost in Web-Space? As Suspect Spam? Do you have a Suspect Spam folder?

On A Positive Note... We thank-you for your responses & replies. The majority of you are getting the weekly issues without any problems and have told us that you enjoy, appreciate them very much. Even those persons who are 80-something in years and confined to their surroundings look forward to each issue when they make it through. Several of you have mentioned how you look forward to it every week and thanked us for what we are doing. We have found out that there were NO problems receiving it in Delaware. Others mentioned that they were getting it "Loud" -- "Clear" -- "Just Fine." Others have found a few link errors in a couple of the newsletters but other than that, we are told we are doing GREAT! Still others mentioned, "Like the newer way of doing it by sending links instead of the huge newsletter file. My 10MB mail box fills up fast as it is."

On Another Note... We have been thinking about our own high school reunion (#39 - AHS Class of `66) recently that is only about a month away. How have we changed, aged over those 39-something years from when we graduated from high school -- ventured on new paths throughout our lives -- lost a few and gained a few friends along the way?

What brought all that on was a recent email we received from an old high school classmate this past week. They had spent some time with another of their old classmates and his parents in Oklahoma over the holiday weekend. His friend had traveled all the way from Winston Salem, and they had not seen each other in over 30 years. They had a grand time and picked up where they had left off. We think it is great that old classmates are able to come together and pick up where they had left off. True Friendships do last forever, don't they!

Remember... July 1-2, 2005, Alva, Oklahoma - AHS Class Reunion (`64, `65 & `66)

Journey To 1949...

This week our journey takes us back 56 years ago via The Alva Review-Courier, dated May 25, 1949, Alva, Woods County, Oklahoma. (old 1949 Newspaper courtesy of Bill Barker, in Georgia.)

What was going on in the Spring of 1949? This NW Okie was 15 months of age, so she is relying on the old newspaper from 1949 and everyone elses memories out there.

Did You Know... In 1949, at Poona, India, a $9 million project for the manufacture of penicillin, sulpha and anti-malarial drugs was being constructed.

We learned something new about our mother's brother, E. J. Paris. Uncle E. J. was a graduating senior at Alva High School (AHS), May 22, 1949. We did not know that our Uncle E. J. Paris attended Alva High. Uncle E. J.'s senior picture appeared in the Alva newspaper with another graduating senior, Lee Denner -- sponsored by Alvin Paris (an older brother of Vada and E. J.). Click Ernest PARIS Family for more information.

We also learned that the B & B located at 312 College (Alva,Okla.) was having a Grand Opening, Friday - May 27, 1949. Their brand new Bar and Grill was furnished throughout with the finest equipment available to serve your needs back in 1949. They specialized in the finest steaks, Milk fed chickens, appetizing sandwiches, counter and booth service. Their new bar featured booths for the ladies, modern powder room facilities and the finest in beverages. C. E. Loomis (southside of the square in Alva) helped with the furnishings. Goodrich Plumbing had a hand in the building of the plumbing of the NEW B & B building. We were trying to figure out exactly where 312 College was located downtown -- would that be down there by and/or across the street from Central National Bank in Alva? What some Class of `49 Seniors stated when asked what they were going to do after graduation day... Bill Meixner was just going to stay around the old town and catch up on his sleep first, and then try a little loafing while not working. Harlene Lord was going to catch up on her sleep first, swim, eat, and loaf, and if she had to, find a job. Donna Lee Armstrong was not quite so definite -- she planned to work for awhile, and then no telling what she will do next. Bill Truesdale said his plans were to sleep till noon every day and go swimming. Work hard and have fun after work.

1949 - AHS Bugettes, Alva, OK...

Remember the Pep Clubs of your high school days? AND... the uniforms we wore? This NW Okie's "Bugette Days" had similar uniforms to the ones pictured here, BUT... the jacket was switched to a black, wool blazer-type in the mid-1960's. We did wear the saddle-oxford shoes for awhile. Not sure when they did away with the "Pep Club" and uniforms, but it was after my time at AHS (Class of `66).

Back in May, 1949 we find that the "Finest Pep Club In State" resided in Alva, Oklahoma. If you turn to page 5, Sec. 2, of the Alva (Okla) Review-Courier, dated Wednesday, May 25, 1949, you might read and see a photo of the "Classy Bugettes," a girls pep club at Alva high school. It stated in the newspaper that it was the real generating power of enthusiasm behind the Goldbugs very successful athletic campaigns. The officers of the pep club, sponsored by Marguerite Elliott, in '49 were Harlene Lord, president; Marvel Maxwell, vice-president; Nancy McGinley, secretary; Joan Scribner, treasurer, and Dorothy Ballard, representative to the student council. The yell leaders in the photo, in front, from left to right are: Earlene Heaton, Emma Jean Fullerton, Katie Ellen Paul and Barbara Turner. Class of `49 Senior Prophecy...

Just for Fun and Looking 10-Years Ahead (1959)... In May of 1949, Bill Barker & Marilyn Hort hopped on their magic carpet and flew ten years into the future to see what the "mighty" senior class of 1949 was doing. You can read that article from page 4, Sec. 2, Alva Review-Courier, 25 May 1949, entitled Class of 1949 Prophecy Is One of New Adventure, Excitement and Lots of Fun.

Here are parts of the `49 Senior Prophecy:

  • Their old friends Bill Needham, William Truesdale and D. J. Hankins owned a large chain of restaurants.
  • Max Ritter, Donald Peterman, Forrest Nelson, Russel Melton and Herbert Peterman were discussing their net income of their wheat farms.
  • Kenneth Reed was the cook in a restaurant.
  • Bill Meisner was cashier and head bookkeeper in the same restaurant.
  • Dan Treece was a General planning a new offensive with his aides, Colonels Bill Barker and Bill Bircher and Captain John Fox.
  • President Joseph Leroy Denner, had just signed a bill making golf othe national pastime. This bill was introduced by Senators Tom Mock and E. J. Paris.
  • Bill Robinson was a matinee idol co-starring in another picture with screen starlet, Emma Fullerton.
  • Jerry Brown had been nominated for All-American football player for the fourth straight year.
  • Gene Myers, Don Johnson, Kare May and Lowell Arndt had set a new record in consecutive home runs.
  • Leon Perfect had made 86 points in a basketball game, setting a new world record.
  • Loren Perfect was a beauty specialist and had gained world wide recognition for his peroxide technique.
  • Neal Hassinger and Lynn Heasly were two world renowned atomic scientists.
  • Carol Melton was a famed author, had won her third Pulitzer Prize.
  • Dorothy Reynolds and Ann Gill were married to Snyders and herding their brood down the street.
  • Harold Butler was explaining the advantage points of the new Chevrolet to prospective buyer.
  • Robert Weibner (sic) was an oil millionaire.
  • Darrel Arndt was opening a new flour mill
  • Raymond Blakely was editor and Wilford Bates was publisher of the Daily Blast. They had hired Wanda Jones as the Lonely Heart Editor. Their star reporter was Kenneth Carter and had covered the Mundy story. Aaron Mundy was the millionaire playboy whom had recently set a new record for speed boats.
  • James Ashton was an inventor and had perfected a method of keeping soup stains off of white shirts -- his theory was, that you should wear a sweater.
  • Elma Cards, Marjorie Frantz, Harriette Wilson and Jessie Hada had replaced the Andrews sisters as the nations top singers.
  • Patti Johnson, Towanda Brickman and Glenda Jackson were collaborating on a new book, entitled "How to Get A man and Keep Him."
  • Nilda Sherman and Agnes Dailing were co-authors of the new hit tune, "Don't Hit Me With A Baseball Bat, I'm Loaded Already."
Read through the Class of '49 Prophecy written by Barker & Hort. Then see if any of their predictions of these AHS Goldbug Seniors of `49 ever came about in 1959. View/Write Comments (count 0)   |   Receive updates (0 subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe
