Okie's NW Corner

Oakie and I were trying to figure what to write, share with you all this week. We have been snow-bound in the Rocky Mountains for a few days. So... I used all my cute little puppy ways to entice Oakie into letting me write this weekend's first issue of January, 2004. It doesn't take much to get my way around here. I can always get a smile, laugh out of Oakie with the simplest things. I have her wrapped around my paws. So... here I am sharing some of our Snow Mountain Retreat (SMR) experiences, photos. We just love this soft, fluffy, white stuff they call snow up here in the mountains. And... We love being snowed in for the first few days of the New Year 2004. We are making the most of each day into January, 2004.

I was hoping to talk my friend Daisy in to adding a few lines of thought -- BUT... it's really hard getting arise out of her sometimes. You see... she is an older dog than I am -- more set in her ways. Us young pups can run circles, haul-ass around those old dogs sometimes. BUT... I have the upmost respect for Daisy -- in awe of her years of experience, knowledge. I still like to see if I can get her to play, chase around the house, though.

The wind does not blow up here like it does in Oklahoma... so you do not feel the cold chill to the bones at our snow mountain retreat. Yep! That is "moi" in the upper left corner trampling through about a foot of snow to find a place to take care of business. Oakie scooped a perfectly good "Dog-path" for that purpose, but I just love to jump and prance in this fluffy, dry, white stuff they call snow. Just makes me smile all over. That picture to the right is my friend Daisy in the blue sweater. She is showing me the ropes up here. Did you know that she single-handedly scared a big bear out of her backyard in the Summer of 2002? WOW! Daisy barely escaped his clutches and ended up being rushed to the Vet for stitches in her left-front shoulder, leg. She was the famous Bear-dog that summer. 1923 Poem - The Pilgrim Bard...

We were reading our copy of The Pilgrim Bard's (Scott Cummins) Twilight Reveries this week and found a few poems he had written for New Years Eve & New Years. Twilight Reveries - A Book of Poems - by Scott Cummins (The Pilgrim Bard), Author of Musings of The Pilgrim Bard, Shadows and Sunshine, The Spy and other poems. Printed, published in 1923, Alva, Oklahoma. These are a few of the poems written by The Pilgrim concerning New Year's Eve and New Years 1922. Below are a few stanzas from his New Year Poem:

"....Another year its shuttle threads
The twelve month spool we all unwind;
Fate's calendar hangs o'er our heads,
Time's scythe is mowing close behind;
Yet enter we the glad New Year,
Filled with fond hope devoid of fear.
On many a page new leaves are turned,
The same old leaf oft turned of yore;
A fortnight hence your vows are spurned;
You're in the same old rut once more;
Live right and keep your conscience clear,
'Twill save you turning leaves each year.
How peaceful looks the earth tonight,

As to New Years... I suppose that you are trying to get everything done that you wanted done for the year 2003... so you can have a clean slate for your next journey into 2004. So what... if you didn't get all those things taken care of in 2003. There is always another year! The New Year journey of 2004 is filled with new hopes, inspiration for peace and a better year for all of us. I suppose some of you have certain traditions for New Years. I read about a tradition from the Highlands of Scotland that is suppose to bring "Good Luck" to the household if they open the front door to let the New Year in -- open the back door to let the Old Year out. Colorado Snow for Holidays...

For those of you who did not get snow for the holidays... I'm sharing some Winter Snow Scenes, 2 January 2004. AND... Sometimes we also have our Yahoo! Messenger webcam (paristimes) going during the daytime hours while we are at our snowy mountain retreat.

We have to share this little bit of info with you, because without you -- we could not have done this. somewhere between New Years Eve and New Years our OkieLegacy counter passed the 200,000 visitors mark. That is 100,000 visitors since last February when we hit the 100,000 mark. Thanks to everyone out there browsing our site and subscribing to our Free weekly OkieLegacy newsletter. You are great!

Choclate Gravy...

"Hello, I was researching the history of Chocolate Gravy and Biscuits and found your site. We had Chocolate and Biscuits for Christmas, as we have every year since I was a child. My grandfather's mother made it for their family every Saturday when he was growing up in Tennessee. Now it is a special once-a-year treat that I make for my grandparents on Christmas. We live on the West Coast and no one out here has heard of it. It sounds very decadent and strange to folks out here! Good to know it has a long history to Southern hill folks. It sure is tasty. Cass Family of Pine Valley...

"My wife is the daughter of Noah Leroy Cass and Edna Mae Cass. Tthey worked and resided in Pine Valley (Oklahoma) in the early 1930's. Also, Bill Goines and his wife Fannie Goines and Jess and Lena Donn also worked and resided there about the same time period. All of the men worked at the sawmill.
