Bayfield, Colorado - How are the rodeos going in your neck of the woods? Does Waynoka, Oklahoma have their annual Stampede Rodeo coming up this next weekend? And . . . Let us not forget Freedom's Old Cowhand Reunion & Rodeo in Mid-August, the next week. If someone gets an extra copy of the Freedom Rodeo program, will you send me a copy? Thanks!
We have heard that parts of Central Oklahoma received only a tenth of an inch rain while the lightning flashed, danced around and the thunder claps boomed. They say, "For awhile, the air was cooler than it had been in several days. All of this happened after the hottest day that had registered 110 degrees in Oklahoma City."
In your lifetime, what were the hottest days that you can remember? I heard on the National news this evening that for the month of July, Oklahoma had the highest average temperatures of all the States in the United States.
We have it a bit cooler up here in the San Juan mountains of Southwest Colorado. We have about four hummingbird feeders hanging up around the outside of the house. Around early morning and early evening hours, you can catch a view of a couple dozen (maybe more) hummingbirds swarming a couple of the feeders. Seems like we refill the feeders each day. Check out our Hummingbird video below, but it doesn't show the two dozen hummers.

Bayfield, Colorado - Just had to share this photo of one of my pugs with you. This photo on the left is my black pug, Sadie. The stalking, creeping chipmunk and squirrel dog. Here Sadie is sniffing out a hiding place that the Colorado wildlife use as they scamper between feeding areas. See more SW Colorado images/photos at our OkieLegacy Picasa Web Albums.
Someone wrote in and asks, "Why is Helena considered a ghost town of Oklahoma?" In OkieLegacy Ezine Comment
I don't have the answer to that question, but I do know that the book, Oklahoma Ghost Towns mentioned it as a ghost town and the definitions of "ghost towns" could be applied to hamlets, villages, towns, and cities that are no longer in existence with all buildings and indications of existence having been either destroyed or covered by water.
The remains of business and/or residential structures still stand but are largely unused and the population has decreased at least 80% from its maximum. Does anyone else know have another explanation?
If you are on Facebook, you need to checked out the Facebook "open group" page You know you're from Alva if . . ." and join the discussion group and share your memories of growing up in this Northwestern Oklahoma rural community!
Helena -- Helena is located twenty miles southeast of cherokee on the Frisco railroad, which runs from Tulsa to Avard. Mart MOnroe proved up a claim east of the town. Cameron Family of Virginia
Virginia - Peggy McClanhan has a request concerning the CAMERON FAMILY (Written By Maria Boys Cochran Sterrett who died October 31, 1920). The first of this family, who came to America, was Dr. John Cameron who was a son of Cameron of Fassifern, a grandson of Sir Evan Dhu Cameron, and a nephew of Lochiel, the last chief of the Cameron Clan. One of Campbell's best poems "Lochiel" describes Sir Lockiel just before his defeat at the battle of Culloden.
The Camerons were Catholics, and embraced with eagerness the cause of the Pretender. The Pretender was a son of James II, of England, he was born after his father was dethroned. After his father's death in 1701, he was declared by the French King, the rightful King of England, and was called in France the "Chevalier St. George," in England the Pretender.
Tennessee - The image on the left shows a Certificate of Death - Place of death, Knoxville, Knox, TN; Mary (Loveday) McGill, died 16 June 1920 from a pistol shot, at home at the age of 50 years. Mary was the daughter of George Loveday (TN) and Elizabeth Helton (TN). Who shot Mary Jane Loveday McGill?
Tam (Tamlog@aol.com) is researching Sevier County, TN relatives and came across the following information for Elijah McGill.
Tam says, "Elijah McGill was the second husband of Mary Jane Loveday, who first married Laban Latham. Laban Latham was a White Cap and he was killed during the battle of Henderson Springs in Sevier County in November 1894.
"On 1-13-1897 Mary Jane (Loveday) Latham marries Elijah McGill. They are found on the 1910 census with several children. Then on June 16, 1920, Mary Jane McGill, dies from a pistol shot, listed as homicide on her death certificate. Elijah (her husband) was the informant. Do you know of a connection to the McGill's in your line? Do you (anyone) know of any of the particulars surrounding this incident?"
