I wonder is the same McClure that had the insurance company there in Alve? Steve
~Steve Nicholson regarding Okie's story from Vol. 11 Iss. 29 titled UNTITLED

If I read the other party's comments right, that would be the same motel that later known as the Townsman, owned by the Keltner's. I also rmember Gary and his brother, Rudy. I was in the Boy's Choir with them.

Duchess' Wildlife Domain

First of all, I would like to thank my friend and neighbor, Duchess, for letting me take over domain this week. The last week's temperatures around here ranged in the mid-forties as us bucks, deers and elk grazed in this San Juan valley and mountains. Four to five elk were spotted crossing the county road 501, around the curve, near the dam at Vallecito Lake yesterday evening. NW Okie had to slow to a stop to watch and keep from running into to this small herd in the evening hours. It was too dark to snap a photo, though.

As this second week of January 2010 begins, we are expecting late afternoon and evening snows in this neck of the woods in southwest Colorado. They, the weather from Albuquerque, New Mexico, tell us that most of the week will be filled with rain turning into evening snows and ending around Friday or Saturday.

NW Okie wanted me to ask you if you remembered the businesses in Alva, Oklahoma during the mid-thirties, especially, 1937-1938? Do you remember when they referred to Oklahoma Blvd. as Normal Street? Did any of your ancestors attend Northwestern State Teachers College in 1937-1938?

We have a couple of linked PDF files for those family genealogists who are looking for evidence of their kin during that time period. You can find for downloadable PDF files in the articles below. There is also a Student and Faculty Directory of the 1937-38 time period.

Roy of Perry, Oklahoma says on 16 January 2010, "It's been foggy for three nights in a row but clears up in the daytime. The gas prices have dropped a couple of cents since it warmed back up. The price at our local downtown Conoco here in Perry, Oklahoma has been $2.56.9 for the past three days now."

Have a Great week and watch for slick, snowy patches along the roadways as you travel to and from your destinations.

December 1926 - Frisco Western Division

According to The Frisco Employes' Magazine, page 50, December, 1926, the Transportation Department, Western Division - Enid, written by Cambell and Campbell, reporters, were reporting on the Western Division for the towns along the Western Division of the Frisco Line.

Campbell and Campbell reported, "L. H. Harshey, draftsman on the western, has been appointed roadster on the central division, stationed at Hugo, Okla. Good luck, Lew.

"H. V. Yerby (Squeegee) comes from Ft. Smith to thee western division as 'transition' in the division engineers' office. Fel sure he will like the western."

A Sad Tale

Campbell & Campbell go on in the article to say, "This is dedicated to radio fans on this division and I must say we have lots of 'em:

"Here lies the remains of a radio fan, who is mourned by his many relations; he filled his gas tank while smoking hi pipe, and was picked up by twenty-one stations.

"On November 1 two Frisco veterans in the interest of 'The Small Town Advancement Society,' of which they constitute the official body, made a trip over the Avard sub-division. While the real purpose of their trip and their accomplishments have not yet been given to the public, it is known that they made a thorough investigation of social and business conditions with the object in view of writing an appropriate slogan for each town.

Their efforts were as follows:
* If you've a girl and gonna marry 'er, Remember livin's low in Carrier.

* 'Twill pay all men to move to Goltry, Who love to look on fairer poultry.

* Fair Helena needs no boostin', she's always on the top aroostin'.

* If you marry, don't be silly, but build a love nest at McWillie.

* If you would make a fortune farmin', success awaits all men at Carmen.

* The bathing beauties of Dacoma lead all the rest in Oklahoma.

* Hopeton, hope of all the hopeless -- Wineless, womanless, and dopeless.

There was an note to Mr Editor at the end of the piece that read, "The official body decline to submit their slogan for Avard, stating as their reason that Avard is on the main line of the Santa Fe while only on a Frisco branch line. Moreover, the literary merit of the Avard slogan is so far ahead of that of the others that its publication would be an injustice to the Frisco Lines. As a substitute slogan, they give the following cryptic words:

* Avard: Where we stayed over night and had breakfast.

Whittet Family Origin & Connections

Rowland Whittet, email: whittet@midcoast.com says, " So far as I can tell all Whittets originate either in Scotland or England. The earliest in Scotland seem to go back to Dundee on the Firth of Tay east of Perth c. 1500 but not long after that. -- whittet family txt file. They are in Kintillo and Kin fauns and elsewhere around Perth and Lord Greys estate.

"There is a Whittets Ait on the Thames in Londown, a Whittet drive leading to the Glenmoray scotch distillery and a passage about Whittets as an establishment in an Old English poem.

"My ancestors were married on board ship as they embarked for the New World where they arrived about 1830 making their way to Detroit and later Sarnia in Lambton County, Ontario where they were among the founders.

"From there the Whittets spread out to NY, MN, OK, KN, TC, CA, FL, MA, RI... you can get a good idea where by searching for whittet on Google maps.

"Margaret Cross Whittet, born c.1810, wife of William Whittet b. c.1804, whose sister, Jane, died at birth. They were the parents of Rowland Cross Whittet, my g grandfather.

"Margaret was the daughter of Henry Cross who was the forester of Kinfauns.

"Henry Cross married a second wife Ishbel Drummond of Methven in 1807 and died of Typhus in 1824. His surviving children were Henry, Jessica, Margaret, William, Charles, Rowland and George with Jane dying at birth and Belle and Rebecca Dying of the Typhus epidemic that killed their father.

"Rowland Cross, who was a jointer, married Mary McLean, the daughter of John McLean who was living in St Clair.

"Margaret Cross married William Whittet who was the foreman of the farm laborers of the Kinfauns estate. They were married on board the boat that took them to Detroit in 1834. From there they moved to a 100 acre lot in St Clair about a mile from John McLean where they were visited by Rowland Cross who ended up marrying Mary McLean.
