Duchess Snowy Domain
Is it only a few weeks left of 2009? How times flies, huh! Even the wildlife of the San Juans are proclaiming it so!
The photo on the left was taken of a stand-off with a deer and Duchess the Pug thought she could encourage to leave the bird feeder alone. Neither was willing to back down! It was taken yesterday (Dec. 13, 2009), in the afternoon. I did manage to persuade Duchess to forego the confrontation with the deer, and back on the patio and eventually back inside the house.
The photo on the right was taken the same day showing an older deer relaxing up on the slope while a younger deer was nosing for fallen birdseed below, in our backyard.
Last Monday and Tuesday, as some of you might know, we accumulated 22-inches of that white powdery, fine snow here in the San Juans of SW Colorado. You can view the December 2009 Snow photos over at NW Okie's Facebook site
The sun came out Wednesday through Friday and compacted the 22 inches of snow down to about 17 inches before the next front came through on Saturday and lasted through Sunday, dropping another 6 inches at our place North of Bayfield and a foot of snow at Vallecito Reservoir in SW Colorado. That is what our reader from Weaselskin Creek reports, "We've had at least 12 inches of new snow today (Dec. 13, 2009). It was fine and powdery earlier today, but seems to have picked up a little more weight and moisture this afternoon."
Purgatory, Telluride and Wolf Creek Ski Resorts will be loving this snow for the holidays.
The Best of the Holidays to All!

1850 US Fed Civil War Slave Schedules of Virginia
This is a list of people who owned slaves in 1850 in the Virginia area of Highland County. There are a few of NW Okie's paternal ancestors on the Gwin, Hull and particularly John Dever who owned slaves back then.
John Dever was the father of Ellen Dever, who married Samuel Gwin. One of their daughters was NW Okie's Great-Grandmother, Signora Belle Gwin, who married John Robert Warwick. So … would that make John Dever my 3rd Great Grandpa?

US Civil War Soldier Records & Profiles
I have been doing some research over at Ancestry.com for our family tree and found this US Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles that shows NW Okie's 2nd-Great Grandfather, Samuel Gwin, born about 1821, at age 42, enlisted 15 September 1863 as a private in Bath County, Virginia, in Company E, Virginia 26th Cavalry Regiment. Cool Water Ranch In SW Colorado
We have been told that the "Cool Water Ranch" North of Bayfield, Colorado in the San Juan mountains was used as the location of the filming of "City Slickers (1991)."
Five cabins for rent by the season from May through September. Sorry, no daily, weekly or monthly rentals available. Located on the banks of beautiful Pine River (Los Pinos Rio) for great trout fishing where catch-and-release is encouraged. Peaceful and relaxing. Studio, 2 and 3 bedroom cabins with kitchens. Quiet, away from the highway. Enjoy 2 miles of river fishing. Only 3 miles to Vallecito Lake for fishing, boating, restaurants and stores. Just 30 minutes northeast of Durango.

1909 Guthrie Team Photo
The photo on the left is a rescan of the 1909 Guthrie Baseball team. William J. McGill is on the back row, third from left. Clare Patterson is on the back row, second from the left.
Jan in Topeka, Kansas says, "Linda, I have visited your website several times, and really appreciate that you have made such an effort to share the wonderfully detailed documentation about your grandfather's baseball exploits.
"I enjoy researching early Kansas baseball history, and have an interest in some of your grandfather's teammates. I am currently working on a biographical article about one of them -- Clare Patterson -- who played on the 1909 Guthrie team.
"The reason I'm writing you now is because of the photo you posted of this team. I was wondering if you would be willing to share a high-resolution scan of the photo? Good close-ups of Patterson in uniform are hard to find, but I would like to be able to include one when I submit my article for posting. I have seen another copy of the Guthrie photo, but the image I've seen has flaws in it around his face. If I could get a good, high-resolution copy of the team photo, I might be able to crop a decent close-up of him out of it. Patterson is standing in the top row, second from the left, next to your grandfather.
"Let me tell you a little more about the project. For the past few years I have been a member of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). One of the SABR committees which I belong to is called the Baseball Biography Project. As the name implies, the members of this project write biographical articles about players. The articles are all posted online; if you'd like to check it out, here is the link. I have completed two bios, on Jesse and Virgil Barnes, and am close to finishing the one on Patterson.
"I have other projects underway as well. I am building a database that includes major league players who had some connection to Kansas. Within that group, I am actively collecting more detailed biographical and baseball record information on several dozen Dead Ball Era players (from the early 1900s).
"Your grandfather is on my list because of his ties to Kansas, although I admit I haven't done much research on him since so much info is already available on your website. Other of his teammates, besides Patterson, that I'm interested in are Warren Gill and Harry Suter. Gill played for Austin in 1906 and Suter played for Austin in 1906-07. Harry Suter, turns out, is buried in the cemetery directly across the street from where I went to school in the small town of Assaria, KS.
"After I finish the Patterson project, if you're interested, I would really like to correspond with you about your grandfather, his childhood in Kansas, his college days at Friends, and the timeline of his career.
"I really appreciate that you were willing to share your copy of the 1909 team. I haven't actually done much research on the Austin and Guthrie teams, other than what I've done for the Patterson article, and that was pretty much centered on him. My focus so far has been mostly on players, and less so on team history."

The History of Eliza Warwick
Here is a link to a 2006 reprinted book of The History of Eliza Warwick - History of Eliza Warwick -- The history of Eliza Warwick is An epistolary novel is a novel written as a series of documents. The usual form is letters, although diary entries, newspaper clippings and other documents are sometimes used.
Recently, electronic "documents" such as recordings and radio, blogs and e-mails have also come into use. The word epistolary comes from the Latin word epistola, meaning a letter. It is a work of fiction . BUT … wouldn't some or most of it be based on some facts?

Merry Christmas To All
Ernest Martin says, "What a wonderful story and I am reminded of the may things you have told about in the past. I wish you well & please give my greetings to your family also.
My life has pretty well settled into the senior citizen bracket - I no longer practice Pharmacy and have put my paint brushes aside. Politicas does not enter my every-day affairs but I remain concerned about our country and its future. Recently I was granted the honor of receiving the title as the Childrens Parade Marshall which I felt was a lift. I hope to send an attachment with this e-mail. You will note that I have aged a bit but I still love my experiences. Thanks to you and Merry Christmas to all."

Clara Gorsching, 1926-29
As to an inquiry that we ran in Vol. 7, Iss. 30, concerning Clara Gorsching, 1926-1929, by Sandie Olson, which read, "I am looking for information about Clara Gorsching, 1926-1929. Her metal grave-marker is from Kern-Schneider. I did an online search for Kern-Schneider, and a lot of German language sites came up. I think I've heard of it, though, as an area funeral home. there is a Kern-Schneider-Kiesau funeral home in Clinton OK."
Richard Chelf - Email: p3ve@yahoo.com left the following comment a few days ago, "Clara Jane was my mother's youngest sister."
Other comments can be read at: Vol. 7, Iss.30.
