I checked out Alva (Allamhagh), Clackmannanshire, Scotland on several sites. Very interesting. You should be delighted that your efforts are going to be shared in the UK. ~SBW

Has anyone heard reports of Lake Creek and Dacoma in the midst of all this flooding? That creek has flooded Dacoma many times over the years, but I've not heard any reports with this series of storms. ~Rodney Murrow

Holiday Greetings To All
It has been snowing every few days here in southwest Colorado. Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, we wokeup to 2 inches of wet snow. I measured it on my NEW McWagner Snow Gauge that my youngest son made me.
Friday night and again Saturday night another snow storm came through. We did not get what the higher elevations received this weekend and the snow seemed a bit drier and colder.
As I sit here at the living room window with my laptop composing this week's newsletter, we have had intermittent snow, wind and sunshine on this lazy Sunday, eleven days until Christmas!

I have added another antique as my 2008 christmas present.
It's a 1923-24 Singer Treadle Sewing machine (also known as the "Red-eye" series), Serial number G0268595, in a Singer Cabinet #2, with attachments, no manual, though.
I did a search online looking for information about this latest acquisition. It's in great condition and at the moment it graces my bedroom as a nightstand along with the Damascus Vibrating Shuttle sewing machine that I already had. NOW... I have matching nightstands... kind of!
I have put pictures of the two treadle sewing machines up on my NWOkieLegacy webshots.
Montgomery Ward Co. made this Damascus treadle machine sometime around 1920-22, according to the serial number that I found under the sewing plate. The Damascus company, I am told is out of business, so finding parts won't be that easy.
Do any of you follow the Oklahoma Sooners College football? Well! Then you are probably one of those OU Sooners followers that have celebrating this week with the Heisman Trophy winner named ... OU Sooners quarterback, Sam Bradford.
Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford has won the Heisman Trophy, college football's most prestigious honor. Bradford beat out last year's Heisman winner, Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, and Texas QB Colt McCoy.
"You asked if any ancestors knew where they were on this date. I remember very well where I was. I was on duty on Second East of St. Francis Hospital as a student nurse in traning. Every one had there radios on listening. I wandered at the time 'Where is Pearl Harbor?' I soon learned. My husband to be had been called up in August 1941. I went to training in November 1941, he was on his way to the South Pacific in January 1942.
"My maternal grandfather's oldest brother, Dalton Riggs (1902 graduate of Northwestern and oldest brother of Sam Riggs of Alva) and his wife Carrie were vacationing in Hawaii in December 1941. On the morning of the attack, Uncle Dalt grabbed his cameras and went out to take photos and movies of what he thought at first was a training exercise. He continued shooting until he was out of film. The government confiscated his film and it was never returned to him. He and Carrie eventually made it back to the states, but it took them several weeks, perhaps months (I've not heard the story re-told in quite a long time, but those are the essential details)." -- Rod M.

1932 Helicron
"In the late 1930s this one-of-a-kind Helicron was placed in a barn and forgotten. More than six decades later this odd lost little gem was rediscovered, rebuilt, and reintroduced to the world. Although the manufacturer is unknown, it's believed that this car was built in France 1932. Following the first World War it was not uncommon for recently displaced airplane engineers to look towards the automobile industry for employment.
As in this example, a few entrepreneurs developed propeller-powered cars with the notion that propeller power was an efficient means of moving a vehicle. On this car, when the wooden propeller is spinning at full speed and efficiently, this little 1,000-pound boat-tailed skiff can hit freeway speeds exceeding 75 mph. This is the one and only Helicron in existence, owned by Lane Motor Museum in Nashville, TN." -- Roy

Calling All '89 AHS Goldbugs
"My high school class is currently planning their 20th reunion.
The website idea was to incorporate something similar to what we did with the AmeriCorps*VISTA. 35th anniversary. There was a place where anyone could submit alumni info making a contest for the most people found for the reunion. I thought it might be a good upgrade to your goldbug section on paristimes.com." -- Mike Wagner, class of '89 - Email: mcwags@earthlink.net
