Duchess & Oakie's NW Corner...

Christmas Traditions... There was a time during the lean, earlier years of Oklahoma & Indian Territory when small trees were scarce and tumbling tumbleweeds were plentiful. New traditions began popping up as families used whatever was available for their Christmas tree and made most of their presents. Then there is the tradition of recycling a Christmas card -- sending it back and forth over the years, because they could not afford another card. When the card was full, they just added a piece of paper and continued to date, sign and pass it along. These are the cherished memories that will live forever in many child's memories.

In the Present... Our family tradition is to migrate to our Snow Mountain Retreat, sharing the holidays with friends and family. Christmas morning finds our decorated little tree stuffed with presents and overflowing stockings hanging from the fireplace mantle where St. Nicholas left them the night before. It's up earlier Christmas morning for a few to start the turkey, ham and pork roast baking, while we wait for the other sleepyheads to rise, gather and settle down to seeing what St. Nicholas has left in our stockings the night before. Dogs & Poker at Christmas 2003The crackling, warm fireplace keeps us warm from the snow that has fallen so far outside. The dogs have gathered for a rowdy little poker game.

Nature's Winter Artistic ScenesSomewhere nearby... a snow-covered, wooden bridge crosses a half-frozen stream to leave more artistic touches to Nature's Winter paintings during the holidays. AND... Duchess and her friend (dressed in their colorful, winter sweaters) can be seen strolling casual in the snow every so often.

Here we sit the day after Christmas and stuffed like a turkey -- Snow-stick 2003 Christmas - 10+ inchesstill snacking on leftovers, watching football, playing poker and getting snowed in at our mountain retreat. The snow-stick outside measuring around 10 inches or more by late afternoon... AND it continues adding snow on into the evening. The mountain snow scenes have been breathtaking and picturesque as long as you are safely snuggled inside by a warm, crackling fireplace. Another year has left us with precious memories, legacies that we have shared here with each other. We could not have done it without you all.

As we reflect back through 2003... We began 2003 by celebrating in January with the OU (Oklahoma University) Sooners as they brought home the Rose Bowl trophy to Oklahoma with a 34-14 win over Washington State. We had requests from some if we knew "How many Pro-Baseball leagues there were in 1904." We are still searching for that answer. We have shared NW OK Marriages of early 1930's thru 1945, WWII POW Camps Legacies, Wiley H. Cowan Obit, Old Alva Photos, Unsolved Avard Murder of 1956, NW OkieLegacy Webshots of... 1920 Powwow yearbook, 1917 Ranger Yearbook, and NWOSU's 2003 Homecoming. The middle of January found us transcribing a 1941 Thesis - History of Old Fort Supply written by Wm. H. Hughes for his Masters in History at Oklahoma Agricultural & Mechanical College.

As we put this year behind us next Thursday, at the stroke of midnight, 31 December 2003, may we all look forward to a healthy, prosperous and peaceful New Year together and continue preserving, sharing our "Okie Legacies" in 2004. Whatever 2004 brings, we will face it as one. May we let bygones be in the past as we continue our journey together into a New Year with Peace, Love and Hope for All in 2004! Here's hoping to see you next weekend, next year with more discoveries, memories to add to our OkieLegacy!

Happy New Year - 2004

My Dad's Sports Column... "Thanks for reviving an old memory for me by including my Dad's column in your OkieLegacy website. He thought the world of your Grandpa Bill (McGill). I'm sure both would be pleased with what we're doing today. I'm going to run that column (along with a few editorial comments) in my Sports Spasms, Friday - 26 December 2003. Speaking of electronic gadgetry, I've wished a thousand times that I could bring my dad back for a couple of days and show him how a newspaper is laid out and published and how stories are sent in to the paper electronically from great distances. He absolutely would not believe it. Even the things we take for granted now, like copy machines, would blow his mind! He was a job printer and layout man in the old hot lead days, when just about everything done was a laborious process. Thanks for everything and keep up the good work!" -- Jim

Regarding Dec. 7, 1941... "I was just 2 years old but my earliest memories are of assorted soldiers riding on trains and street cars (in California where I lived) and my own father, working in the ship yard. When my little sister was born in 1943 I wanted to name her Pearl Harbor. Luckily for her, my parents declined the suggestion but I still tease Cheryl, reminding her she narrowly escaped school enrollment as Pearl H." -- Bonnie
POW Camp at Ft. Reno... "I would really like to access records that would show who the prisoners, at Fort Reno, worked for. I was about 12 years old when some of them worked for my father a couple of days. I know there is a roster of names in the El Reno Depot Museum. However, I can not remember the names of the men I worked with.' -- Altus O. “Al” Ayers
Limeys & Oklahoma History... "It might be hard to believe but Limeys love reading about Oklahoma. The Okies, the 1st star-trekkies, fleeing away from the dustbowl, ruined crops and hopes." -- Bob Wilson (Leeds, England) - Email: rw.bcra@ntlworld.com

Blood of Heroes... "Very well done. (Warning: graphic) Turn up your sound. When it is all done, click on the tiny print at the bottom of the page in the center where it says "info." This guy went to a lot of trouble to get his point across. I think every American needs to read this and feel blessed that we live in this wonderful land. God Bless all of you, your family and friends. And may our Holidays be blessed with Liberty and Brotherhood for all time! Click: Remember the Blood of Heroes."
Sale Creek & Soddy, TN... "Dear Oakie, I'm searching for a name of a particular settlement only 4 or 5 miles west of Sale Creek (on same side of river) which actually is now part of Sale Creek. Bakewell, Tennessee lies south of Sale Creek. Rhea Co., Dayton is north. It was a settlement in Hamilton County, and after the civil war became both a white and black settlement intertwined with stores, business and many farms and homes. My grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Pendergrass moved his family there from Birchwood. He married Edna Marie McClanahan and they had six children. He worked on the Grover Eldridge farm which consisted of huge acreages both for crop and fruit and my grandfather and uncles broke wild horses that were shipped in by train from the west. But the area at that time had a Soddy, Tennessee mailing route and was not considered part of Sale Creek. Now this area for the most part is a Sale Creek mail route. If anyone can help me find the 'proper' name of this settlement I would appreciate. (If there is one). Thank-you." -- Stephanie H. Francisco - E-mail: Stephanie_7084@msn.com -
Family Surnames: Pendergrass, McClanahan, Hyder.
WWII German Prisoners & Richard Warner... "Hi! I was looking at the page about German prisoner camps in Oklahoma. At the top of the page it says the author 'Richard Warner' would like to hear from people with knowlege of the camps. My dad who is still living was in the army and was assigned to the Military Police Escort Guard assigned to Camp Gruber to guard German prisoners. Any ideas how to contact Mr. Warner? Thanks." -- Steve Johnson - E-mail: steamdonkey@aol.com

Happy Holidays & Great New Year... "Warmest wishes for very delightful and satisfying holidays with family and friends, and a most happy, healthy, prosperous, and peaceful 2004!" -- Joel and Lanie
