Oakie's NW Corner...

Where has the weekend gone? Time as flown so fast around these parts since we last wrote. Homecoming at NWOSU, in Alva, Oklahoma has come and gone. A hard freeze is on it's way this weekend... they say! AND.... Thanksgiving is just around the NW Corner. Besides all that, this is the 40th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, November 22, 1963, Dallas, Texas.

Have you ever wondered "What If?" What would life be like if President Kennedy had NOT been shot that day in Dallas, Texas, November 22nd, 1963? Other questions we have been hearing on the news lately is... How did the 1963 assassination affect your life? What impact did it have on you and your families life afterwards? Why are we so fascinated with the death of President Kennedy? Did the Mafia Mobs have a part in the assassination of President Kennedy? We do NOT know or have the answers to everything.

While we are speaking of President J. F. Kennedy, we had an interesting email from the daughter of the late Stan Ramsey, owner of Stan Ramsey Co. who was commissioned back in 1961 to reproduce the oil painting of President Kennedy by the famous Oklahoma artist Dick Goetz. There were a limited number of prints produced back in 1961. We would really like to know more about this famous Oklahoma artist, Dick Goetz that created the Kennedy portrait. Has anyone else run onto any information concerning this famous Oklahoma Artist? We would love to hear from you.

NOrthwestern's Ranger Band - Homecoming 2003, Alva, OKla.As to Northwestern's Homecoming festivities last weekend... You will notice the pic of our Duchess in her Ranger outfit seated calmly at the curb in downtown Alva. The only thing she howled at was the sirens motioning the beginning of the parade. This Precious Pug does draw a crowd, though. One lady stopped us to ask our permission to take Duchess' photograph. Duchess being the friendly type was so excited with all the attention, but it did not go to her head. She was an extremely "Good Dog" the whole weekend. You can catch the NWOSU parade photos over at our NW OkieLegacy Webshots. Who knows... Maybe you will see someone you recognize and get a glimpse of what the downtown area of Alva become. Amongst the local dignitaries that graced the antique autos was Alva's own homegrown Mayor - Arden Chaffee and his wife.

That brings us to the end of this week and other horse matters. We have been busy compiling horse data with photos into a database program... plus spending some quality time in the corral with our Paint filly, Doquoti (a.k.a. "Blue Eyes" or "Dorthy"). Doquoti was weaned last weekend from her mother. The mare is home now somewhere in Missouri. "Blue Eyes" is in the process of learning the halter and lead rope. She has been known to drag around the lead rope in the corral for the last few days. It has paid off, though... calmly walking up to us -- leading nicely -- stopping shortly behind us when we stop -- backing, turning left & right. We have been laying lots of rubbing, loving hands on her, also.

With Thanksgiving coming next Thursday, we have not decided exactly what are plans are. What if we took off that week for parts unknown to gather our thoughts? AND.... there could be some surprises for some of you out there in the western regions. Maybe you should save us some white meat from the turkey with gravy, dressing and all the fixings on the side.

We are thankful for all the memories you all have shared with us this year and look forward to sharing more OkieLegacy memories in the Issues yet to come. Keep those memories, legacies coming this way as we sign-off here wishing you all a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
