Oakie's NW Corner...
It has been a bit warmer this week, but it looks like Fall is coming
back with a bit of a freeze this weekend and a slight chance of
rain mainly in the northeast parts of the state. The farmers just
about have their wheat sowed and the fields are glowing with the
fresh green carpeting of the Winter wheat. You can also see electrical
fencing being strung for Winter grazing of livestock.
We finally have the Alva High 1920 Pow-Wow yearbook scanned in
it's entirety on our NW
OkieLegacy Webshots for your public viewing. Next step is to
place the whole thing on CD/DVD for whoever wants a copy. Just let
us know. The person who sent me the 1920 yearbook wanted it to go
to our Historical Society Museum. So... at some date it will found
it's place with the other artifacts of our past here in Northwest
Oklahoma. This 1920 Alva High School yearbook available for vieiwing
through the thoughtfulness, courtesy of Thom Bahr, Kirksville, Missouri,
who found it in a house he purchased in Missouri.
As to the Alva High
1920 Pow-Wow... We thought you might enjoy reading some
things written back in 1920 about some of the Students at Alva High
School... It lists the student's by name, nickname, ambition,
occupation, likes, dislikes, characteristics, wants and where they
could be found (CLICK
HERE). Check out the list of Advertisers
in the 1920 Pow-Wow yearbook. We hope this helps someone looking
for a sense of what NW Oklahoma graduates were going through back
in 1920.
As I was reading through this 1920 yearbook from Alva High, I think
back to other yearbooks and the predictions that were made and I
sometimes wonder if any of these predictions ever carried any weight
or came true for many of the students. How well did some of these
predictions turn out? ... I wonder! I don't believe that the population
of Alva ever reached 20,000 in 1935.

Oakie's Old Clock...

This is a photo of the Old late 1800s windup clock
that a friend gave me a few weeks ago. It runs great and chimes
on the hour. It also dings on the every half-hour. The label
on the backside of the clock is partially there and reads,
manufactured by Ingraham Co., of ___stol, Conn., USA." I
also took a photo of the inside
workings of the clock. I am told that it was built sometime
in the 1890s. If anyone out there has anymore information concerning
this old windup clock, I would love to hear from you. Thanks!

Castle on the Hill Photo... "We
found an old picture that had belonged to our Great-Grandparents.
We knew it was a Normal school, but little else. A search for Hugh
Donnan brought me to this site. We have a picture of the Castle
on the Hill. Now if we only knew who the students were?"

WWII POW Camps - German Paintings... "I saw the beautiful
painting of the German girl in your newsletter! I forwarded it to
Diane Glasgow, with whom I emailed a few years ago about the paintings.
She's very interested. I don't think there is a signature on any of
the 3 paintings at the Waynoka museum. Two of them have names of German
cities painted on banners, but neither is Berlin. I couldn't tell
you the names, though. We have several official photographs of Germans,
taken at the Alva POW camp. The Alva museum probably has the same
photos and more. I'm sure it would mean so much to your contact to
learn if the paintings were done by
his father!' -- Sandie, Waynoka Historical Society
St. Louis Browns... "There are errors in your St.
Louis Browns account concerning Von Der Ahe and the Robison Brothers.
They were not related. However, Edward Becker was a long time associate
of Mr. Von Der Ahe whom I suspect stabbed Chris in the back in brokering
the sale to the Robisons. There are also errors in the stadium chronology."

Crouch / Warwick Connection... "I am researching the family
of and John Crouch Sr., born abt 1724, [said to be from Wales, but
I have seen no verification to support that] who lived at one time
in Randolph County, Va/WV, then left abt. 1787-90, went to Bourbon
County, Kentucky, then later to Ross County, Ohio, where he died in
1800. I am interested in the information listed on your site about
an Eleanor Crouch
from Randolph County who was the 2nd wife of John Warwick, I have
seen references that stated she was a widow of a Crouch, and one that
stated she was a old maid daughter of a Crouch, from Randolph County,
and I would like to know if you have any references her family, and
or date of marriage to John.
I can verify the following as children of John Sr, Joseph, married
to ELizabeth Warwick, Andrew, married to Judith Westfall, Elizabeth,
married to Henry Delay, John Jr., married to Sarah Nelson, Sarah,
married to John Ryan, David, married to ELizabeth Cassity.
I suspect, but can not verify there were
more children, one named Jacob, and Eleanor, But, the brother of Sarah
Nelson, married to John Crouch Jr, had a brother named Charles Nelson
Jr. who was married to an Eleanor Crouch, and lived until Charles
Jr. died in 1802 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. I suspected this Eleanor
to be the daughter of Charles, since her birth date fits in between
John Jr. and ELizabeth, but as I said, I can't verify this. Eleanor
did leave Kentucky after the death of Charles Jr. and settled in Fairfield
Cty, Ohio.
Do you have any knowledge of who your Eleanor Crouch could be, perhaps
a daughter of Joseph Crouch?" -- Randy Stalnaker - E-mail: randystalnaker@webtv.net
