Duchess & Oakie's NW Corner...

Duchess and Oakie are late again as usually. We have lots of farming going around up here in Northwest Oklahoma this week. As you drive along our rural roadways, you will see lots of tractors on our northwest country fields... shuffling the earthern beds and preparing the soil for their winter wheat crops.

Thanks to one of our readers... Sandie Olson and the Waynoka Historical Society now have some great pictures and history of Edith, Oklahoma. Sandie sent me a copy of the information that she received. Click Edith, Oklahoma Legacy in the right column for more history of this Railroad town on the Cimarron River and Bufflo Northern & Santa Fe Railroad line that ran between Buffalo and Waynoka.

Another reader was wanting to know WHAT the "Normal" stood for in Northwestern Normal School. Can anyone help us out with this question?

Duchess and I received our Fall Issue of Waynoka Chronicles this week. If you are not getting it, then you are missing some interesting history from around Northwest Oklahoma. It is made in Waynoka by the Waynoka Historical Society. The Waynoka Historical Society was honored with a statewide award from the Oklahoma Museums Association annual statewide conference (2003 Annual Awards program) Friday, September 19th, at the Simmons Center in Duncan, Oklahoma. The Waynoka Historical Society's quarterly newspaper, Waynoka Chronicles, was chosen as the top publication for museums with annual budgets under $25,000. Carol King, Sonya Cummins and Sandie Olson serve as the editorial committee for the Chronicles. If you would like to subscribe to the Waynoka Chronicles, Contact the Society:

Are there any Santa Fe Depot and train buffs out there? Waynoka's Santa Fe Depot Restoration Project is underway. Roy D. Easley, A.I.A., Enid, Oklahoma has been selected as Project Architiect. While the design phase is underway, they are raising the funds needed to match the Oklahoma Department of Transportation's TEA-21 commitment of $240,000. Waynoka's share of the $300,000 is $60,000. They need $33,000 to reach their goal. If you would like to share in preserving this magnificent history, Contact Sandie Olson at Email: sandieo@pldi.net. - or see sample Donation Form in Mailbag Corner below.

Weather-wise... Thursday was a gusty, cool day in Oklahoma, but not as gusty, wet as hurricane Isabel that slammed into the Carolina's on the East Coast. BUT... this Friday was comparably calm, beautiful with the reminder that the Fall Equinox is just around the corner. Sounds like another beautiful weekend shaping up in Oklahoma. Duchess and I will see you all next weekend. Thanks for your wonderful pictures, help and sharing as usual!

Gosh! September is almost gone, ain't it? How fast Time Flys nowadays. See you all next weekend with some more Ranger 1917 Memories.

PARIS Family... "I have been searching for years for PARIS' from Olahoma, and just now found this place. My name is Pamala Overby Hulsey. My mother is Lucille Paris born in (New City) Boomtown outside Burkburnett in 1921. Her father was killed in 1927. His name supposedly was Samuel Oscar PARIS. He had a brother Henry. The small newspaper article on his death said his name was Dr. O. V. Parish. I know he was born in Kentucky around 7/4/1880 or 1870. He came to Oklahoma and owned some ranch called O & E or O & A Ranch, which he had to sell since he might have killed a horse theft. He married Maggie Herndon. Does Samuel PARIS belong to anyone in this Reunion that you mentioned? Please forward to them. Thank You." -- Pamala - E-mail: PAMALAJH@aol.com
Ghosttown of Wisby, Oklahoma, Woods County... "Wisby, Oklahoma is not on your list. It was the town where my great-grandfather farmed. It was located about 25 miles south of Alva. The 1895 map has it
in the wrong location. It was west of Aline, not south." -- Cal Sale, Iowa - Email: KMikes1066@aol.com

Kirtley Family in Oklahoma... "I was born (1950) and raised in Oklahoma City. I attended Putnam City Schools through 6th, 7th Grade at Hoover Jr High and 8th through graduation at Casady School. My father was born in Marlow, OK and moved to Enid with his family in the '20s. He graduated Enid High in 1929. My Great Grandfather was in the land run and settled near Perry. There are still quite a few Kirtley's located in the Perry area. I've always been interested in all aspects of Oklahoma history and ran across your web site while surfing last week. Very interesting! I'd like to receive your newsletter, please." -- Jeff Kirtley, Phoenix Creative Co. - Email: jeff.kirtley@phoenixcreative.com

What 'Normal' Stands For... "You are so wonderful to create this newsletter. I cannot tell you have much I have enjoyed each issue. Thank You. Can you, or any of your readers, tell me what 'Normal' stands for at Northwestern Normal School? -- Barbara in AZ
Miller & Collins Parole Cards - Familiar... "Doesn't this sound familiar? The same L/A on this prison card as on N.L. Miller's prison card and the 'citizenship pardon' too. The sentence in the blue is pretty much what we surmised about my Carrie Oakes murder, doesn't it? === 'I'm trying to find out particulars about Otto Collins & the murder he committed. (Otto was born 23 Nov. 1892 & died in Pittsburg Co. in November 1969. He lived in Haywood, McAlester, Richville & Scipio - all in Pittsburg Co.) The murder happened in Pittsburg County and he was sentence to Life at McAlester on 2/19/1919. His prison card (#9454) reads: 'Repreive to 5/18/20.' 'L:/A from Apr. 21, 1922 to June 21, 1922.' Paroled 6/21/22.' 'Paroled 6/21/22' (Handwritten - all other entries are typed), 'Citizenship pardon 3/28/30.' While in prison, he was able to leave whenever he wanted and visit his house, buy cattle for the prison and basically have the run of the place.....' " -- Karel

Old Freedom Hardware History... "Can you please tell me who to contact about the Old Freedom Hardware? I need to find out how long they were there, as I have an oak table that they sold. We are trying to put a date on it. Thanks much." -- Carol Burns, WOODWARD 256-9989 - Email: norm-carol@itlnet.net
Edith, Oklahoma... "You've done it again!! Someone sent marvelous photos and information about Edith. Thanks so very much!" -- Sandie
