Oakie's NW Corner...

Hope you all survived the Labor Day weekend and got rested up for the Fall weeks ahead. Some parts of NW Oklahoma, I am told, received four (4) inches of rain out west/south of here.

I have been keeping busy with the horses this last weekend and week, but like Duchess promised you last weekend... I have been transcribing some more of the "Ranger" 1917 Album. Some of you might remember just a couple of the Juniors mentioned to the right... Luella Harzman and Thomas "Tom" Coffman.

While you are over at the NW OkieLegacy site checking out the Class of 1918 (Juniors - 1917), you can read about the History of the Junior Class. We have also added some tidbits about the Sophomores, Freshmen, A Class and B Class. Could someong out there fill me in on "what" the "A Class" and "B Class" were back in 1917? I hope some of these memories from the 1917 Ranger Album jog a few memory cells out there. Maybe someone will find another connection.

Back to Duchess, though... She has finally fallen asleep at this late hour after pouting most of the week. She really wanted to write this week, but...

Anyway, the reason Duchess is pouting is because I would not let her play with her boydog friends all this week. As she turns 6 months old, she has come into her first vulnerable situation that most female dogs experience at that age. To make it short and get to the point, I had to sit her down and give her the "facts of life" talk.

Sorry this is so late getting out to you all. Thanks for your feedback and for sharing your family memories and information. I am heading out of here for the weekend, but Y'all have a great week and I will see you next weekend with more Okie Legacies. Some of you PARIS relatives out there... Do not forget about the Paris Reunion, 7 September 2003, in Chester, Oklahoma at the Chester Community building on the eastside of Chester. Duchess and I will be there. See Ya!

Mailbag & Links Corner....

Hurt Legacy Site... "I was surfing and came across the subject site. I noticed that you have included as part of the Hurt Legacy an e-mail I sent regarding my great-grandmother, Josefa Hurt. Since I sent that message my e-mail address has changed to wrightpa22@msn.com. I would really like to know whether or not your Hurt's and mine are related. Would sure appreciate hearing from you. Thanks!' -- Pat Wright
Pine Valley, Oklahoma... "I have written a short summary of my early years in Pine Valley, Oklahoma, 1927-1933. It is on a 3-1/2 floppy disk that I will send to you if you are interested in it. It lists a few names from my early memories and give a kid's view of what life was like back in those days before the Great Depression and World War II. There may be a few still living who will see the summary and enjoy reading it --- even remember some of the names mentioned. Pine Valley was a 'sawmill town' about one mile south of the present community of Muse, Oklahoma, in LeFlore county. It was part of the Dierks Lumber and Coal Company 'empire' of
the '20s and 30's that consisted of lumber mills in Wright City, Broken Bow, DeQueen, AR, Dierks, AR, Mountain Pine, AR (near Hot Springs). The Great Depression hit the industry hard in the '30s but the Pine Valley mill continued until the mid '40s, I've been told. Little remains of the once thriving community totally 'owned' by the 'company.' I had a number of responses from former residents when Reminisce Magazine
published a note by me asking for them. That was several years ago. By now, I think most of the former residents have died since I am 82. In a day or so, I will mail you the 'floppy' that you can reproduce on your
computer. The short summary may be useful to some who have an interest in this small slice of '20s and '30s history of this corner of Oklahoma." -- Frank Powell, Florence, AL - E-mail: phranqpowell@aol.com

Seeking Osage Nation Info on Earl Jones... "I've been trying for some time to locate part of my family. I can't seem to contact anyone at any official site and the phone #'s have been disconnected or changed without any new ones. This is the only thing I can manage to work at all. I'm looking for my grandfather's family. That is my mother's father. He was born in Osage Nation and not a citizen of the United States, in what is now Oklahoma. He was born in the year 1897 and was named Earl Jones. That's about all the information I could get from my grandmother (mother's mother) I am 50 years old now and would like to know a little bit more about my Indian heritage. I would greatly appreciate any information and help in this matter. I've never even seen anyone from this side of my family. My granfather died when my mother was a young girl and both she and my grandmother are now deceased. I called the BIA in Oklahoma a few years back... But since my grandfather and his father before him did not sign some document that the U. S. government was passing around then, they said they would have no record. I gave up, but now maybe there is a little hope again, if the Nation also keeps separate records or if anyone knows anything. Sorry to be so long winded, but if anyone knows anything that might help I'm asking please do." -- Donald Kean - E-mail: capt.hook@mail.utexas.edu

Andrew J. "Bunk" Snapp... "I read your item on Freedom, Oklahoma and in it you mentioned a Bunk Snapp, as one of the early pioneers there. I am researching the Snapp family and have an Andrew J. (Bunk) Snapp born in Taney County, Missouri, in my data base, and was wondering if this could be the same person. Do you have any suggestions as to how I might get more information or leads, about the Bunk Snapp mentioned in your item. Any help will be greatly appreciated.' -- Glenn - E-mail: kgs4444@cablelynx.com
Mann Farm East of Chandler... "Though born and raised in OKC, Lincoln County holds a large part of me. My Great-grandparents had a farm in the county. It passed to my fathers Aunt and Uncle. My Grandmother became ill and Dad spent several years living with Harold and Margeret Mann on a farm located east of Chandler, North of Sparks and South of Davenport. The Deep Fork flooded and cut a path across the farm and the water did not receed until recent times. Our family spent most all weekends, summer and holidays on the place. We never expected the land to leave our family, but Uncle Harold was forced to sell in the early '70's because of failing health and there were/is times when you can't get in or out of the place. Several of my kin and all of my family still regret not having the land. Wish I could go back in time a be the one who purcahsed the place or had the funds to buy it now. Most of my kin are in New Zion and Morning Star." -- John D. Hendrickson - E-mail: soonervike@sbcglobal.net

Seeking Martindale/Ransbarger for a Grandchild Book... "Thanks for such an interesting website. We have seemingly exhausted all efforts in trying to locate information on grandparent/neighbor stories for a grandchild book. If anyone has any notes or memories of FRANK MARTINDALE, FRANK RANSBARGER and/or JESSIE RANSBARGER around 1895, I would appreciate it. Also, anything on FRANK MARTINDALE around 1918...... these folks were in the Cook School/Carr City and Redmound communities. Grace and Peace to you" -- Carolyn Cowen - E-mail: ccmission@cox.net
