Duchess' Corner...
Ouch! That must Smart!... What Oakie will do -- OR -- shouldn't
do... This Greenhorn Rider should NOT ride bareback in a herd of
horses!
Oakie was riding this gorgeous copper, sorrell stud horse bareback
from the pasture to the house this Friday morning. He is broke to
ride. That wasn't the problem. He got to moving faster than Oakie
was ready for him to travel.
Afterwards, Oakie told me that she felt herself slipping off of
the rightside and decided to slip-off this gentle, beautiful copper,
sorrell before he got in the middle of the mares up ahead. Oakie
also said, "I did NOT relish the thought of hitting the ground
under the hoofs of the mares.
When Oakie fell, she sprang quickly to her feet - dusted herself
off - picked up her glasses, hat that were tossed to the ground
on impact of her right thigh hitting the dry, hard farm ground.
She turned to catch her older friend, Bud's expression. She noticed
that he had to put his hand to his mouth to keep from laughing out
loud (LOL). I guess Oakie the Greenhorn Rider gave him a rodeo,
huh?! It would not have been so bad if Hustler's daughter and the
other mares hadn't gotten him moving faster.
As Oakie exclaimed to me this evening, "You know what?...
There ain't much to hold onto up there except a bunch of mane."
This was Oakie's first bareback ride of her whole life. Her friend,
Bud, was in the pickup behind her, of course. BUT... was he going
to catch her, though? Oakie thinks he just wanted to see a ... Greenhorn
Rodeo Rider.
What an experience! Glad she was able to drive me home tonight
so I could get this column written for Y'all!
Good
News, though... Oakie is still feeding horses morning and evenings.
She has been spending some contact, bonding, petting time with her
2003 filly (Doc's
Diamond Lil) the last few days. This Friday Oakie stood
next to and rubbed all over the sweet little filly. Oakie even got
Doc's Lil to lift up her lefthind hoof. Lil even followed Oakie
when she was walking away a few times. Lil has turned into a dark
brown duchess of the horse-kind, don't you think?
Besides feeding horses and bareback riding... Oakie
has been gathering her Grandpa Bill McGill's baseball photos together
for another writer who wants to do a Fall article for the St. Louis
Browns Historical Society on Bill McGill the pitcher. Grandpa McGill
was a lefthanded pitcher with the St. Louis Browns back around 16
September 1907. Before that he pitched for the Austin Senators in
the South Texas League.
Hey! Wasn't that the day that Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory
merged into a brand NEW State where the corn is as high as an elephant's
eye... when we get a decent rain, that is! Anyway, you can catch
all those early 1900s baseball pictures over at Oakie's
Webshots - Grandpa's
Baseball.
Northwestern State Normal (Castle On the Hill) - 1917...
Oakie found this 1917 album that she is attempting to scan and transcribe
on to the NW OkieLegacy at a
future date. You may have to stay tuned for that next week, though.
Not everything got done this week. Until next weekend, we leave
you here with this quote and wish you a glorious Rodeo weekend in
the Waynoka, Oklahoma this weekend. Don't forget about Freedom's
Biggest Open Rodeo & Old Cowhand Reunion next weekend (August
14th -16th). I don't know if I'm going to let Oakie ride... or NOT!
I'm out of here for tonight (or should I say Morning...12:34am)
so I can go lay in my Oakie's sore lap and get some stroking of
my own.

Henry R. McGill... " I am positive this Henry R. McGill
is indeed the son of Clarence and Alice Ross McGill. (See Tree below).
His brother, Minto and my grandfather, Will Webb, were best friends...
they were a very close family. I found Henry R. (probably Ross)
McGill 1880 Census age 6. The 1900 Census (Henry born October or
December 1875) showed his age as 24. The 1920 Census Henry R. and
Lizzie W. Henry was age 44, She was age 47 born in Illinois. Her
father was born in New York and her mother in Pennsylvania. Henry
was buying leases for an oil company, and Lizzie was not working.
1930 Census found Lizzie as an inmate in the Duke Sanitarium in
Gutherie stating she was married, but we could not find Henry. Alice
Ross McGill is the sister of my great-grandmother, Louisa Jane Ross
Webb. I Know that Alice's decendants must have pictures because
Clarence was a professional photographer in Ouachita and/or Nevada
Counties in Arkansas. I am not sure he survived long enough to move
to Oklahoma. I am trying to find a descendant. Thank you so much
for contacting me. God Bless. I don't believe your McGill and my
McGill are related, but would love to attempt to prove a connection
if you are interested." -- Barbara in AZ

you have not taken the time to visit the Oklahoma Family Group Sheet
website lately, you should. It is located at www.rootsweb.com/~okfamgrp/fgs.htm.

Mullendore Ranch... "Hi! I am Kathleen and Gene Mullendore's
Grand-daughter. My mother is Katsy Mullendore Mecom. I was reading
a little piece of an article on your website about how a lot of the
large ranches later continued on into a father son operation and realized
you failed to mention anything about a grandfather/grandmother to
a grandmother and granddaughter. You see my sister and I as well as
our mother have worked very hard keeping our ranch working and respected.
Just as my grandparents did. My husband and I as well as our 4 kiddos
live and work on the ranch to this day and will give it our all to
be able to pass it down to our children and the rest of my moms grandkids.
Please understand... I am not angry with Y'all. I just feel that you
should have done all the research possible and you srely would have
been told corerctly about our family. Thank you for your time and
I hope you will be able to get this corrected. Once again... I truly
appreciate it." -- Kathleen

for the ancestors of JAMES McGILL or MAGILL, b.19 Dec 1792 either
in Ireland or Maryland; d.12 Jan 1864 in Philadelphia; buried Woodlands
Cem., Philadelphia. He married (14 Nov 1816 in Philadelphia) ANNA
MARIA LEINAU, b.21 May 1799 in Philadelphia; d.26 Jul 1846 in Philadelphia;
buried Woodlands Cem., Philadelphia. They had four McGill children
(that I can account for so far): Samuel (1819-1897, my gg-grandfather,
also buried at Woodlands), Anna Maria (1824-?,) William (1836-1895),
and George (1841-1891). Most of this information came from a Leinau
researcher, except for the burial info which I obtained from a site
visit several years ago." -- Paul F. Wilson - Fayetteville, NC

it went up a couple of weeks ago. The site starts with 1930 and I
am working my way backwards. 1920 is almost completed and will be
on line very soon. My other site is devoted to Grant
County. Thanks." -- Karen - Email: awise110@cox.net

Inquiry
of E. L. Ballinger & Seiling, Oklahoma... "I ran onto

E. L. Ballinger listed here stuck out very clearly to me. My father
also graduated from Seiling High School, but in 1937. I looked for
his name in the information you have, but never found it. Do you know
if this E. L. Ballinger is in reference to Eldon Lee Ballinger, of
Seiling, Oklahoma, or not? His father moved to Seiling around 1899
from Missouri, and he lived there all of his life, with his wife Cathern.
Please let me know as soon as you are able. Attached a photo of my
grandfather, Edward Lee Ballinger, just for kicks. My father's fathers
inititals were also E.L. just like my dad's. Edward Lee Ballinger,
and Eldon Lee Ballinger. But, he was the postal delivery man in Seiling
back in those days. Bye!" -- Mark Ballinger - Email: dallasite9227@yahoo.com
