Oakie's NW Corner...
I suppose some of you are exclaiming, "Aaaah Shucks! Where
is Duchess tonight?" She isn't gone for good! She will be back
from time to time. I hope you all will survive this weekend without
her input here.
Duchess has been given the weekend off so the "Doggy Humane
Society" doesn't come after me for "Doggy, Puppy labor
laws." Do not want to over-work the poor little puppy. I can
report that Duchess has been keeping cool during these "Dog
Days" of Summer, though. Lately -- Duchess is spending her
time hauling-ass (as some might say) and making figure eights around
the living room furniture. I think she is either trying to start
something -- or -- distract this writer's attention from the keyboard
so she can get in her two-cents worth here. I have noticed that
when I do not pay attention to her, she has emptied her toy box
out and placed each one of her toys at one time or other right in
my lap, in front of my face or at my feet. She is a sweetie... and
smart!
If you drop down to the Mailbag Corner, you will see that we have
connected with others who have one of those Oklahoma City serigraphic
prints of President John F. Kennedy. BUT... we are still searching
for more information on the company who printed them and curious
as to the value on them today.
Just
in case there is someone out there whose grandparents attended Northwestern
State Normal (Castle on
the Hill in the early 1900s -- perhaps this photo will shed
some light on some of those memories. We can identify three (3)
of the students in the photo... On the backrow, leftside is Jim
McGill. On the backrow, sixth male person from the rightside stands
a tall, dark-haired young man by the name of Bill McGill. Now...
If you turn your attention to the frontrow, fourth from the leftside,
there is a wind-blown young lady that I suspect to be Constance
Warwick. There are three ladies in the center, frontrow that have
the long skirts, but the other young ladies have the just below
the ankle skirts and high-topped, laced shoes. Most of the young
men seem to be sporting bowties. What year would you guess this
picture was taken? Do you recognize any of the group as a relative?
You can click the photo for larger view or get a glimpse of it over
at Oakie's
Webshots in the Castle
on the Hill folder.
As for the weather in Oklahoma... It is still hot, humid with a
trace of a few raindrops now and then. So... I guess there is such
a thing as "Rain" out there. They have only seen about
.4 inch or so this week in Northwest Oklahoma.
As for other happenings around here... we ventured to the movie
theater this week to catch a period-type movie that came out last
weekend. The movie was about a real racehorse named Sea
Biscuit during the depression days of the 1930s. If you like
period movies, horses and stuff like that, you will like this movie.
I found myself wondering if Red
Pollard (the jockey) ever connected back up with his parents,
brothers and sisters after being separated from them during the
depression. I really think you will like this movie. Click here
to read more about John
"Red" Pollard.
Do not forget to keep those Okie memories and photos coming this
way. We would love to include them in our free weekly ezine. And...
We shall see you all next weekend with some more NW Okie memories.
With August knocking on our Summer doorstep this weekend, where
as July gone? As Bob Dylan wrote and Peter, Paul and Mary sang,
".....The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind. The answer
is blowing in the wind."

Henry R. McGill
Oklahoma - 1910

I am not sure who this McGill is or if we are related...
or NOT! This week a friend sent me this photo. If there are any
McGill's out there that have information on. This McGill, I would
love to learn more about him. I am supposing that he was assistant
state printer for Oklahoma in 1910. Could this possibly be the
Henry McGill that was the son of Clarence and Alice McGill that
is mentioned in the Mailbag Corner?

Mars Event... "CLOSE ENCOUNTER
WITH MARS
(See Also - space.com/spacewatch/mars_preview_021108.html)
Never again in your lifetime will the Red Planet be so spectacular!
This month and next Earth is catching up with Mars, an encounter that
will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in
recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.
Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit,
astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close
to Earth in the last 5,000 years but it may be as long as 60,000 years.
The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within
34,649,589 miles and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object
in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear
25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will
look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy
to spot. At the beginning of August Mars will rise in the east at
10 p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m. By the end of August
when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and
reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 a.m. That's pretty convenient
when it comes to seeing something that no human has seen in recorded
history. So mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars
grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month. Share
with your family and friends. No one alive today will ever see Mars
this close again." -- Marv

Fine Art Room. The Print is framed and
in fairly good condition. Thanks for responding and let me know if

Mysterious Death of Young Lady... "I was born, raised
in Alfalfa County. We moved to Texas for 20+ years and then back to
Helena. Two years ago we moved into Enid. One of your readers gave
me your website address -- I am enjoying reading it. You do good work.
I was interested in reading the article on the mysterious
death of the young lady in Woods County. I recall reading about
it at the time. Can't believe it has been so many years - still no
suspect." -- Sylva
JFK Serigraph... "In researching my R.V. Goetz serigraph
of John F. Kennedy, I came across your mention of it in your online
magazine in the March
10, 2001 issue. Did you ever find out anything about it? Are the
serigraphers still around? Any sense as to its value? Thanks."
-- Karen in Missouri

Irons Family Search... "I am looking for information on
a man named Guy Irons. He was from Alva. He married my Great Aunt
Mary C. Salwaechter around 1910. They then lived in Capron in Woods
County. If anyone has any information they can email me. Also, what
happened to the Woods County Genealogical Society? I was trying to
find information and my letter was returned to me. Thank you."

Family Farm Settled In Alfalfa County - Still in Family...
"I grew up in Helena, OK. My parents were both born there, and
both of my grandparents were raised there. I went to Alva my freshman
year of college ('68-'69) then transferred to OSU where I graduated
in 1972. I now live in Oklahoma City and have worked for the telecommunications
industry in Enid, Shawnee, and Oklahoma City (SWBell, AT&T, and
Lucent) for 30 years. My cousins and I still own the farm settled
by my great-grandfather in Alfalfa Country during the Cherokee Strip
Land Run of 1893. A family friend from Helena, who now lives in Enid,
sent me your website. I have not had time to read a lot on the site,
but it certainly looks interesting. Thanks for subscribing me."
Oklahoma Historical Society - Online Inventory... "The
Oklahoma Historical Society has FINALLY put all of their newspaper
microfilm inventory online. You may search their holdings by county,
town, newspaper name, dates, etc.. You can search on a county and
then by clicking on the column headings the information is sorted
by that criteria. This is the greatest thing the Historical Society
has done in a long, long time. Click Oklahoma
Historical Society then Click Newspapers."
NW Normal School - Alva, Okla... "Mine is a letter of
inquiry. I descend from Walter Ross who was the president at the Normal
School 1908-1910. Walter Ross' sister, Alice, married Clarence W.
McGill in Arkansas. They moved from Arkansas to Oklahoma Territory
in the late 1800s. Clarence and Alice had three children that I am
aware of ... Henry, Minto, and Clare. Is there any chance in the world
your McGill is related to this family? Thank you for a response."
