Duchess' NW Corner...
We started this last week out with a little cool front that passed
through Oklahoma... dropping temperatures about 15 degrees. BUT...
it didn't take long for the three digits to heat up things by the
end of the week. AND... we could use some much needed rain (whatever
that stuff is).
The first part of the week Oakie and I drove out into the pasture
to check horses. WOW! Was that exciting -- or what! The horses came
right up to the pickup window and stuck their huge noses inside
for a sniff of this Pug Lady. It was nose to nose - tongue to nostril
and nose (my tongue licking the horse's nose and nostril). I get
so excited when I see those big creatures, but Oakie won't let me
out to play with them. Durn-it!
Oakie's been digging into the old photo treasure box again. This
time to share some 7th & 8th Horace Mann pupils, in Alva, Oklahoma. You
want to see some old (1955-56) Alva, Oklahoma school picture of
Horace Mann School - 7th & 8th Graders? Click each photo for
a larger view.
This
first photo is the 7th graders of Horace Mann School. Oakie's sister
(Dorthy) is on the bottom-row, second from right. Is that Bob Bright
on the bottom-row, left side? Some of you Northwest Oklahomans out
there can help me identify the rest of the 55-56 seventh graders.
Here
are the eighth graders of Horace Mann School, in Alva, Oklahoma.
If you notice the next to the bottom row, third from the right is
a young girl who just turned 61 years of age on July 24, 2003. We
would love for you to help identify the rest of the eighth graders.
Thanks in advance for your help.
As
for golf teams in Alva, Oklahoma during 1933... This old six-some
dates back to May 7, 1933. Reading from left to right: Hart, T.
Schaefer, Bill McGill (our grandpa, third from left), J. Schaefer,
Davis, Parker.
We understand that the Freedom Chamber of Commerce is gearing up
for another popular tradition at their 2003 Freedom Rodeo Activities.
Yep! We understand that there will once again be an Old Time Shoot-out
in this unique northwestern community around the afternoon of August
16, 2003 -- when the 66th Annual Freedom Rodeo and Old Cowhand Reunion
honor Old Cowhand, Arlo Darr. So... Set your calendars for August
14 thru 16, 2003 to be in the Freedom, Oklahoma area during Rodeo
time. Hope you making plans to fill the Freedom streets around that
time? Do NOT forget the 67th Cimarron Stampede, in Waynoka, Oklahoma
the week before the Freedom Rodeo. Oakie told me.... She may practice
riding a horse. We'll see! BUT... be sure to buy a Freedom Rodeo
Program to check out the old photos of Warwick's & McGill's.
It is getting late and some of us have to get up at 6:00 a.m. Saturday
morning to feed horses. So... until next weekend... Keep Cool! AND...
keep those Okie Legacies and memories coming this way.

Searching for HURT Family... "We
are searching for heirs of Antonin Hurt. Antonin Hurt was born 24
May 1879. He had a wife Anna, nee Zajicova, born 16 Juni 1882. They
had two sons, Antonin Hurt, born 24 may 1904; Milos Hurt, born 27
July 1905. It is believed that Milos emigrated from Czechoslovakia
to Canada - but that is not certain. Does any of this mean anything
to you please? Do you know anyone else whom we could contact to ask
about this? We would be most grateful for any information or guidance
you may have. Thanks, and be well.' -- David Lewin - Email: davidlewin@btinternet.com
Search & Unite... "Search & Unite attempt to help
locate people who, despite the passage of so many years since World
War II, may still exist "out there". We also assist in the
process of re-possession of property in the Czech Republic. See our
Web page at http://remember.org/unite/
- David Lewin is running the small Search & Unite office out of
London, attempting to help the many who suspect that, despite the
passage of so many years since World War II, someone may still exist
somewhere out there. Another aspect of our work is locating people
with property which was taken away by the State during the Nazi era
and in post World War II Czechoslovakia. In the Czech Republic today
such property can, in many cases, be reclaimed."
Amazing Oklahoma Native (Adoption Reunions)... "I thought
you might be interested in this story. Jennifer Robinson was born
and raised in Oklahoma City, She is a member of the Nigh Family. She
has started her own search group for adoptees and birth parents, and
has reunited over 2900 people in the United States. We thought the
people of Oklahoma would like to know what kind of person came out
of the heartland. Oklahoma must be a wonderful place. Here is Jennifer's
AOL webpage - Adoption
Search Group" -- Thank you." -- Shellie

Cadet Days in Alva, 1944... "I was receiving your letter
regularly and suddenly.... the last 2 weeks.... it stopped. Would
you please renew me on your list. I really appreciate hearing about
Alva happenings....... both present and past. You do a great job.
I also appreciate your keeping my section showing the Air
Cadet Days in Alva - 1944. I have had a few emails because
of that site. Thanks for your great work." -- Tom McCarrick-

Southeastern Normal School... "I am a student of Southeastern
Oklahoma State University in Durant, Oklahoma. I was wondering if
you may know of a website with information, such as you have on your
website, only about Southeastern Normal School in Durant. I am in
the process of gathering demographic information for a Social Sciences
Project about Southeastern when it was still called the Normal School.
I greatly appreciate any information you may be able to give me. Thank
you." -- Leslie
Mavie, Minnesota... "I found your Mavie MN very interesting.
There are some photos of Mavie (possibly the old general store?) on
efiler.com which lead me to your site. Thanks for the information
and good luck with your work!" -- Cheryl
Weatherford & Standifer Family... "My father was born
in Indian Territory, now called Weatherford, Oklahoma, in a rather
large family with mixed siblings. He was a twin. The twin brother
had 8 children and he had me. My Grandmother and Grandfather Barnes
were both born in Missouri. I didn't know my grandmother's name until
I started searching for the familytree. I have made sure my grandchildren
know my name.... maybe It will be easier to find ... plus she was
one of 12 children and 11 were girls. Sharon Ashton... did a great
job of tracking 11 women. They are part of the Standifer family from
Noble. I was born at Pocassett on my Uncle's farm and love to tell
every one that... to catch the expressions... NO ONE knows where that
is. I graduated from high school at Happy, Texas, definitely not like
the movie. More like a big family -- still feel that way. I guess
this is a 'Nut Shell profile' more ways than words can say. Thanks
for the space." -- Jean Barnes - E-mail: kenjean@nts-online.net
