Oakie's NW Corner...
This week and the month of June has gone by so fast. We have been
busy packing, getting ready for moving this weekend to a new apartment.
That isn't the only move we have been making, though... We have
opened a mirror site for The Okie Legacy Ezine archives at
OkieLegacy.net. It is still
a job under construction, though.
Earlier this week, I got to visit with a reader that enlightened
me with some interesting tidbits concerning the Monfort Drugstore
and its first driveup window located in the back of the store...
in the alley. I did not realize that Monfort Drugstore had the first
ever driveup window in Alva, Oklahoma.
Some of you older NW Oklahoman's might remember The Ark...
a college hangout in the really early days. College students would
go there and learn the latest dance craze... like the Jitterbug.
I finally find out where The Ark was located. It was catty-corner
from the Northeast corner of Northwestern State College Campus.
Some of you might remember it as the building that sits east of
the alley in the 500 block of Oklahoma Blvd. -- on the other side
(west) of the alley sits the Conoco Gas Station.
Does anyone out there have any Lahoma (Oklahoma) history, legacies.
One of our New subscribers is interested in Lahoma history. For
those of you unfamiliar with Lahoma, it is a few miles west of Enid
on the east-west highway.
Has to old Cow camps of Oklahoma... have you ever heard of Russell's
Cow camp near Hardy, Oklahoma? Check out the Mailbag Corner for
more information. If you have any info, please share it with us.
Thanks.
A gentlemen emailed me looking for more information on Oklahoma's
Panhandle Aviation history. I know very little about that, but did
forward it to some NW historians out there that I thought might
be able to help him. Carl Gregory is currently working on an Oklahoma
Aviation book being done by the Oklahoma Historical Society in conjunction
with the Oklahoma Heritage foundation in conjunction with the 100th
anniversary of flight. If you know of someone or have some information,
please contact Mr. Gregory at his email in the Mailbag Corner below.
Thanks.
Another reader sent me some more pictures of the inside of the
Old Carmen IOOF Home.
He said there were no names listed with any of the photos. If you
recognize any of these pictures or know of someone who might know
the individuals, please share your info with us. Thanks for everything.
Old Opera House Murder... I ran into an Okie Legacy reader
this week who asked me the link to the Old Opera House Murder so
they could go in and finishing reading about it. I am still working
on transcribing the Oklahoma Supreme Court of Criminal Appeal for
Nelson L. Miller back in 1912. You can check out our NW Oklahoma
Mystery at Old
Opera House Murder by clicking the link. Thought someone else
might be interested in it, also. The links to the Appeal records
that we have transcribed for the Old Opera House Murder of 9 November
1910 are listed in the Mailbag Corner.
Speaking of NW Oklahoma mysteries... Have you ever heard
about the March 14, 1922 mysterious fire that emerged from nowhere
inside an elderly woman's house. The New York Times reported back
in 1922 that blue flames would appear and things in the room would
catch fire. I haven't had much time lately to check out our local
papers for this March, 1922 fire mystery, but maybe some of our
readers has some recollection, memories of this strange occurrence.
Have you registered your phone numbers with the "Do NOT Call
Registry" yet? I just did! You can register your personal and
mobile numbers online at http://donotcall.gov.
Enjoy the end of June that is just around the corner. We will see
you next weekend for the 4th of July Weekend of festivities. Have
a safe one! AND... keep those Okie Legacies coming this way.
