Oakie's NW Corner...

Before I begin... I would like to share my Mother's Day E-card. The young men and puppy in my life made and sent me this Mother's Day flash media card. It may take awhile to load if you have a slow, dialup connection. Thanks Robb, Mike and Duchess! I Love You! I am Proud of You ALL!

We received another great name for our new little sorrell filly with the diamond on her forehead. This week they suggested Doc's Diamond Gal or Doc's Miss Badger. I am leaning towards something with "Doc's Diamond... " in the name. Something like "Doc's Diamond Lil." Thanks for all the suggestions. I may have to let two readers be godparents of our new little filly, because it is the combination of the last few names that I am leaning towards. Thanks!

Emma Huston Building... Emma Huston BuildingCalling all Northwest Oklahoman's! Help us think back to around 1915 and fix our memories on the southeast corner of Barnes Ave. and 6th Street, in Alva, Oklahoma. That is where the Emma Huston building stood in 1915. The building still stands, but has had many businesses over the last 88 years. Today the Smith's Vision Clinic occupies the whole building. What we would like to know is what other businesses were in the Huston building? Back when I was in High School (or was it Jr. High School) there was the Palace Barber shop on that corner. Other than that, my memory is really rusty. Does this picture jog any other's memory cells?

Village cut Ups - Alva, Okla.Village Cut Ups... I have another photo sent me this week concerning the Village Cut Ups. Our reader was wondering who the musicians are in the photo? When was the band organized? Where did they play? When did they disband? Can you identify anyone in the picture or have any information to share on the Village Cut Ups activities? We hope the photo jogs someone's memory out there. Thanks!

Someone wrote me and asked about an Oklahoma town that no longer exists. Has anyone out there ever heard of Romig, Oklahoma? What county did it exist? Mary said it was named after a family with the same surname. Another person said that there was a "Romis" Oklahoma in Bryan County by Durant. I am not sure that "Romis" and "Romig" are the same, though. If you have any information about this Ghosttown, please share your information with us. You can e-mail Linda or Mary's email address is listed in the mailbag section below.

I have another lady that is looking for a copy of the Pioneer Footprints Across Woods County book. Does anyone know where there might be some for sale? Thanks.

Friday evening as I sit here in Northwest Oklahoma, it is cloudy, cool and calm out with the freshness of the rain that fell earlier today across Oklahoma. The wheat has been turning from green to golden... starting at the bottom and changing to the yellow gold wheat. The May winds produce a sea of green, wavy wheat fields that can be seen as you drive the highways and rural roads through the Oklahoma countryside. NO! I did not get a picture of it yet. BUT... I will! The freshness of the rain and the winds that follow send out the sweet smell of the waving wheat. You know... as the Oklahoma song says, "The waving wheat sure smells sweet when the winds come right behind the rains."

Even though it is tornado season around the Heartland, I love this time of year. Everything is green, sweet smelling with Spring blooming with new life. You all have a great May weekend while you can. See you all next Friday evening. Keep sending those memory jogging photos and stories. Thanks and take care!

13 Weeks Old - Duchess

Our Li'l Duchess is getting use to her NEW red harness. Most of the time she handles the new restraint quite well. BUT.... sometimes she grabs the leash in her teeth and tries to take herself for a walk. Either that... or she is trying to eat it.

1932 Home Comfort (WIRCO) Cast Iron Cook Stove... "I recently acquired this stove, I`also have a 1977 issue of 'The Antiques Journal' that I found my mother's stove. The picture is dark so I cannot tell how it sits on the floor. My stove does not have legs. I don't know if it is suppose to. This stove is in very good condition. I would like to find out as much as I can about this stove and where I can find parts for it. Thank you for your time." -- C.L. Brewer - Email: brewdl@att.net

Reminiscences About My Grandma... "One of my earliest memories is of what was called the "cook stove" (as distinguished from a "heater"). It was the 1923 model enameled Home Comfort Range made by the Wrought Iron Range Company of St. Louis, Missouri. The stove came with a very interesting cook book, which I inherited from my mother, to whom it had been given by my grandmother, who was unable to read it."
