Oakie's NW Corner...

02-24-02, traveling to Mountain Retreat

As the first Arctic-front was hitting Oklahoma last weekend, this northwest Okie was heading westward via I40, Route 66 and I25 towards Stone Mountain Retreat (SMR) in SW Colorado for her 54th birthday. AND... to enjoy the cool, snow-capped mountain scenery. Also saw plenty of deer sightings in the SMR mountain pastures and surrounding areas. We made it here in a couple of days in fine shape... AND... at times the temperatures were warmer than Oklahomans were experiencing the first of the week. That is until March rolled in like a lion and February ended.

Before I get started on this week's NW Corner, let me thank all of you who sent birthday e-cards and emails with your birthday thoughts and wishes. They warmed this displace for a short time... NW Okie heart completely!

night before the Full Moon, 02-26-02The day after my birthday, February 26th, I happened to get this snapshot for Y'all of the ALMOST Full Moon as it peeked it's glistening, bright globe of light above the Stone Mountain in SMR's front yard. I got this shot just as the sun was setting in the west (approximately, 6:28pm). Hence, there was still some light to catch some details in the mountains and foreground of barn, corrals.

February 27th, 2002, SW Colorado Full MoonI wasn't so lucky the next night with the light, though. The Full moon made it's entrance about 30-minutes or so later on February 27th. On this night the full moon looked like a round, bright, white dot on a black background when I took the picture with my digital camera. BUT... It was still a magnificent sight to view. Did anyone else out there get a shot of that Full moon that was suppose to be the brightest of Full moons so far? Send me a snapshot in a Jpeg (jpg) file.

Oakie's Webshots... The end of February (28th) was a gorgeous day at SMR's mountain retreat with temperatures reaching in the 50s and only a slight breeze. I got to walk around the pastures and do some work outside. I also got some scenic, mountain photo views from the west and north views of Stone Mountain Retreat. You can see the "Stone Mountain Retreat (SMR)" photos over at Oakie's Webshots. Grazing Deer, Feb. 27, 2002, at SMR

I also have some "pics" of three deer that were caught in the early morning hours of February 27th, grazing in SMR's side, front yards. Of course, I was inside the house (still in my pajamas) quietly, looking out the windows so as not to startled the deer. I think these are the same three that our youngest son wrote about last Fall (2001) -- the Mother Doe with her twin babies grazing in the yard. BUT... only take that as one amateur deer watcher to another. Do Young Deers usually hang together and return back to their same grazing spots like this?

Old Oil Fields & Dance Halls... One of my readers is looking for any information, documentation concerning the old oil fields around Osage county. Does anyone out there have any documentation of these old oil fields in Osage County? If any of you have (or know of) anyone who has some old photos of an "Old Dance Hall" in Osage County that Bob Wills and Johnnie Lee Wills used to play, send them this way in JPG format. As I understand it, the dance hall no longer exists and some old-timers want to put up an historical marker where it once stood. BUT... when Kaw Lake is at its normal level the site is under 20 to 25 ft of water.

Memories of Alva (Oklahoma)... Another one of my readers sent me some of her fond memories of growing up around Alva. Genevieve (Cook) and her family used to live across the street north of us when we lived at 703 7th Street (Alva, Oklahoma). There were three in their family (two girls and one boy). We would play in their yard and they would play basketball, hula hoops, etc... over in our yard. By the way... Do you remember when hula hoops first came out and you could buy them for under a dollar?

Anyway, Genevieve remembers, "...having a soda at Holder-Southern Drug where the floor squeaked as you walked on it; shopping in Anthony's with the 'air-cylinder' that sent money upstairs after you bought an item; the Rialto with great family movies; and last but not least -- driving around the old town square, up 6th Street, turn left at the Boulevard, right into the Sonic (or on to Pangburn's restaurant) and turn around and then do it over and over for a couple of hours to see your friends after school riding around also......" [Checkout more of her fond memories in the Mailbag Section" below.]

The last part of that about cruising the old town square, 6th street, the boulevard and stopping at the Sonic, Dairy Queen, Lotta Burger, etc... before turning around and repeating it over again was a mainstay of what teenagers had to look forward to in the small, rural community of Alva, Oklahoma. Maybe once in awhile someone would have a sock-hop at the Junior High Old Gym. Of course... You need a car, drivers license or know someone who had both.

As I said earlier... March blew in like a lion this Friday with another arctic-front that is promising to remind us that Winter is NOT over with yet! Looks like you all in the mid-western states up around Chicago, etc... are going to get the big part of the snowstorm that is heading in a northerly and easterly direction towards the New England states. We might be driving back through some of that snow in the northwest corner of Oklahoma (if any lasts) through Sunday, Monday.

See Y'all (southerly You all) safely back in the NW Corner of Oklahoma next weekend. Keep the light shining bright! ((warm hugs to ALL!))

Old Oil Fields in Osage County... "It is a shame that there isn't any detailed history of the oil fields in Osage Co. The history just wasn't documented. What got me started was that my wife is from Shilder, OK. When she was a little girl her folks use to go to Big Beaver to dance to Bob Wills and Johnie Lee Wills but nothing was documented. Some of the old timers up there want to get a Historical maker placed in the Area to make sure it isn't forgotten. The big problem is that when the Kaw Lake is at normal level the site is under 20 to 25 ft of water. I did visit the site this year and took some pictures of the area but all is left is the piers of the Beaver Creek bridge."
Old Osage Dance Hall... "I appreciate you writing the story about the old dance hall for me. I hope we can get some leads. Thanks again."

Happy Birthday... "Linda, wishing you a very very Happy Birthday. May God shower all the happiness of life over you with making the coming year best among all the years you have seen in your life. There is a power that will light your way to health, happiness, peace and success, if you will but turn toward that light. Love for you and your loved ones, nears and dears."

I was born here in Oklahoma (Wewoka) in eastern Oklahoma and lived in Cromwell and then in Elk City where I am now. I lived in Oregon for thirty years and then back here. I missed Oklahoma and glad to be back here. That about it. Thanks again."
Electric Scotland - Clans, Burkes Peerage etc... "Alastair MacIntyre is the editor, publisher of Electric Scotland website. He has been working to clarify the status of the Clans. The revised web site is now up and has referrals to the various clans and some of the related septs are also shown on another section. There is also a link to the Burkes Peerage that gives a free thumb nail sketch of many prominent Scottish people. This site is now the closest that I know of that takes into account the legal status from the Lord Lyon court, the approval of the Scottish Council of Scottish Chiefs and the pending status of the others. Here is the latest Clan review from Alastair at electricscotland.com. You can also subscribe to his weekly email magazine here as well. Please forward to other lists and groups that may be interested."
The Real Uncle Sam (Paris), Sand Pointe, Idaho...My Uncle Sam (Paris)
These are photos that taken at Uncle Sammy's house in Sand Point, Idaho. Sammy is one my mother (Vada Paris McGill) younger brother. The lady standing beside him is his wife Cecilia. They always called her "Cec." Uncle Sammy has always lived in Sand Point. Uncle Sammy is one of the remaining sons of Ernest Claude & Mary Barbara Hurt Paris. His brothers & sisters, in age of their birth, oldest to youngest: Leslie, Alvin, Vernie, Vada, Zella, Kenneth, Sammy, Geneva, and Ernest Jr. (EJ). Check out ParisTimes Pioneers Genealogy for more Paris info.

George Elford's Phone #... "Hi, its me again, I read Nette Elford's Obituary. It said that her brother George Elford preceded her in death. I don't see a George Elford on the Social Security Death Index for Alva, Oklahoma, but I do see this phone number (1-405-555-1217). Do you have a 1979 Directory for Alva, that could tell me if George lived there, and if that was his phone number at that time? Thank you." -- Laurel
Fond Memories... "Hi Linda, you can put a pin in your reader's map for me. I am an old playmate, neighbor, Genevieve (Cook) Latza. 702 Church St. I do remember playing in your backyard with Amber and you sometimes.
I have been married since Aug. 1967 (34 years) and away from the community for those many years traveling with my family, one boy and one girl, both married. We have been living in the Cleveland, OH area for approx. 14 years and love it here.
However, I do have fond memories of friends whom I left behind and can no longer find when I return for a visit. So much of my memories are kept in my heart -- Washington School; Alva Jr. High (the old one with the steps inside that were worn from years of kids); Alva Sr. High days; Girl Scouting in the Park; the Zoo; having a soda at Holder-Southern Drug where the floor squeaked as you walked on it; shopping in Anthony's with the 'air-cylinder' that sent money upstairs after you bought an item and before it burnt down; the Rialto with great family movies; and last but not least -- driving around the old town square, up 6th Street, turn left at the Boulevard, right into the Sonic (or on to Pangburn's restaurant) and turn around and then do it over and over for a couple of hours to see your friends after school riding around also. Great times! Keep up the great newsletter. It's fun to read and keeps me informed of a connection in my childhood."

"Hi Linda... I didn't receive your e-mail for 2/23. I look forward to these every weekend. Maybe you didn't send one out this weekend, but if you did, I would appreciate receiving it. You do a wonderful job on all of these... they are most interesting. Thanks for all the work you put in to the weekly letters."

Theresa Teller Inquiry... "Looking for a Theresa Teller who married a Jacobs. They had two sons by this marriage, Bonn and Dean Jacobs. What became of them? Were they in the Military in WWI? Theresa was living at Stafford, KS I believe when she was married to a Jacobs. She apparently divorced him and married a William S. Lemons who lived near Edith, OK. When did she die? Where was she buried? She had an older sister, Sarah Elizabeth Teller born Keokuk County, IA and married Dr. Charles Asbury Ruggles. She resided in Stafford, KS and her husband ran a Sanatorium there. She divorced Dr. Ruggles and married J. M. Wing, of Freedom, OK. From my records that I have, shows her buried at the Freedom Cemetery, Freedom, OK. I would appreciate any info I can get on Theresa. She would be my Great-Aunt. She was the daughter of Henry S. Teller and Julia Ann Ford of Keokuk County, Ia." -- evans@avalon.net

History of Scotland, etc... "From a web site in a Lighthouse on the West Coast of the Shetland Islands. The Shetland Island are about 60 degrees north (about equal to Anchorage Alaska. They are above the Orkney Islands. This has to be one of the most northern web sites. Complete History of Scotland | Lots of other Scottish Background and maps. Please foward to other sites and boards that may be interested."
