Oakie's NW Corner...

Good Morning, World! Another week brings us back to the NW Corner. It's always great to be home. It's always good hearing from new subscribers and the regulars. Let me see... What's happened this week?

There was Thomas Edison's Birthday (Feb. 11, 1847) on Monday; followed by Abraham Lincoln's (Feb. 12, ); Wednesday we were reminded that it was Ash Wednesday; and then that lovers day on Thursday, St. Valentines Day. The Winter Olympics are still going on in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Next week we can look forward to yet another President's birthday, George Washington's (Feb. 22, 1732) on Friday. AND... I guess this Pisces keeps great company this month. Just around the corner from George's birthday is my birthday (Feb. 25) which starts off the last week of this month. Boy! It's short, isn't it? .

Meanwhile... Driving through the countryside this week, there is absolutely no signs of the ice, snow that created havoc around our state a few weeks ago... BUT... the view of downed poles and utility linemen busily out on the rural roadways repairing, replacing the downed electrical poles... Can still be seen. I understand that some rural communities are just now getting their electricity back on... If at all. The weathermen in our neck of the woods keep telling us the Spring-like temperatures will continuing into the weekend and into the first of next week.

A friend in Southern Oklahoma sent me a bit of Southern Oklahoma Spring sprouting in his neck of the woods a few weeks ago. He found a delicate yellow, blooming flower in his yard. You can see a little bit of southern Okie Spring in the "Mailbag Section."

Oakie's Bell(e)Lets Talk Old Bells... How much do you know about "old bells?" I have this old bell that I bought back in the Fall of 2001, from a place in southern Kansas. The Bell is a little rusty, but in decent shape (I think). Do I leave it aged as it is or clean the rust off and paint it? Wouldn't the antique part of it be preserved if I just left as is? It needs mounted on something, also. I don't know what to mount it on. That's where I need your suggestions, help. Right now this great bell sits upon my player piano at the moment because I don't know how or where I want to mount it. I await your "Bell Knowledge" with "Baited Bell Breathe."

Speaking of Bells... the first of the week we were taking a tour of this blacktop, county road that winds north, west of Cleo Springs, in Major County, Oklahoma. We weren't really looking for "Bells" at the time, but this fantastic Elm Flat Independent Christian Church Bell was mounted on a metal, welded pole outfront of this rural country church.

I told David to "STOP!" I needed a picture of that Bell for a friend who collects Okie Bells. Right on cue... David stops, pulls the pickup into a parking spot... I jump out with camera in tow, snap a few shots of this Major County, Oklahoma Bell to send to my friend who collects bells.

As to Elm Flat... the church sets on the eastside of the blacktop road, on the southeast corner where two country roads meet. On the northeast corner, really close to the road, sets this old, abandoned, concrete, building of some sort that has seen better days. No glass sets in the windows, nor are there any doors to shutout the elements. There are a few rural homes around at this intersection. What I would like to know is, "Was Elm Flat a little rural village (community) of some kind way back when?"

I don't suppose you have noticed that this newsletter actually got sent out on Saturday instead of late Friday night. I'm just making a few changes on delivery date to see what you all think. Thanks! See you next weekend.

Some Colorado friends sent me this fantastic shot of some Southwest Colorado Wildlife in their pasture! Click the photo for the larger view.

Winter Olympics Update... Well! I guess Canada & Russia will be sharing the Gold this year at the Winter Olympics in the figuring skating. They say that the French Figuring Skating Judge got suspended over the whole deal. What do you think about that?

Mailbag & Links....

"What a nice piece since I grew up in Carmen OK. I saw the Alva rancher dog issue in the USA today. LOL. I now live in Vancouver WA. Very Very interesting, I miss Oklahoma. I haven't lived there since I attended NWOSU, but I try and keep up what's going on."

"Thanks for including my letter. Unfortunately, I don't have a scanner for you to include the photos. I hope to hear from some interested people and maybe exchange information. Thanks again!" -- Cindy
"Linda,... and I want you to know I continue to
enjoy your online publication, The Okie Legacy. I have a new email address and would like to see if you could start sending the legacy to me at that address...I'd really appreciate it."

signs of Spring in Southern OklahomaSigns of Spring...
"I hate to do this to you but I just had to share a bit of the signs of early spring that are here in southern Oklahoma."
NY Weather... "It sounds like you've been getting a lot more snow there then we have had here this year, not that I am complaining; no snow at all would suit me fine. The western part of NY state has been getting pommelled, (Buffalo broke their all time record already and the winter's only half over, they got 92 inches as of a week ago), but we've had less than18 inches total all season and most was gone within a day or two, mostly bare out there now again after a day of steady rain. It sure beats the winter of 1969-70 when we were never under less than two feet and it was sub zero nearly every day
for most of the time from Dec. 10th, through Mar. I didn't think we'd ever see warm weather again, it was so gloomy and cold all the time. Well, I have to scoot, have a ton of mail to answer here. Take care."

Thomas Edison's Papers... "The Thomas A. Edison Papers is a documentary editing project sponsored by Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, the National Park Service, the Smithsonian Institution, and the New Jersey Historical Commission and supported by over 60 public and private foundations, corporations, and individuals."
Hull Family Association... "Our new Association website is www.hullfamilyassociation.org . In addition to being Member Sec./Treasurer I am the Journal Co-Editor and on the Website committee. Sort of chief cook and bottle washer position."

Bridging the Gap to Unite Families... "Hi Linda,I wanted to let you know that I have a new URL for 'Bridging the Gap to Unite Families (Parris-Paris-Doty-Smith-Franklin)' it is at my own domain." -- Veronica

Paris Family Inquiry... "I am still trying to find the maiden name of James Franklin Paris' first wife. Also, looking for the names of Henry and James' two missing sibs. What I have so far are: There should be 9 total (7 boys and 2 girls)
    Bennett
    William
    James
    Isham
     Volney
    Henry
     (one missing)
     Elizabeth
    (one missing)
"Do you have a list of those Paris' buried at the Oklahoma Cemetery? It appears that James was living with his son Robert in Woods County, Bishop Township, Oklahoma on the 1900 census. James was supposed to have died 1913. I have him as dying in Cass Co., Illinois but that doesn't make since he was divorced from his second wife and I don't think he would go back there. But James isn't listed with Robert or Robert's son Omer on the 1910 census for Oklahoma, Major Co., Bishop Township. Since, you are in Oklahoma is there anyway you might be able to see if there is a death cert for James there? These Paris' are driving me crazy!
"Did you ever hear anything about a David Paris that was born in Arkansas in 1860's, I found him on the 1870 census with James Franklin Paris. I am thinking he might have been a nephew of James' and Henry's. David might be the missing brother's son?" -- Veronica
