Oakie's NW Corner...
Good Morning, World! Another week brings us back to the NW Corner.
It's always great to be home. It's always good hearing from new
subscribers and the regulars. Let me see... What's happened this
week?
There was Thomas
Edison's Birthday (Feb. 11, 1847) on Monday; followed
by Abraham Lincoln's
(Feb. 12, ); Wednesday we were reminded that it was Ash
Wednesday; and then that lovers day on Thursday, St. Valentines
Day. The Winter Olympics are still going on in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Next week we can look forward to yet another President's birthday,
George Washington's (Feb. 22, 1732) on Friday. AND... I guess
this Pisces keeps great company this month. Just around the corner
from George's birthday is my
birthday (Feb. 25) which starts off the last week of
this month. Boy! It's short, isn't it? .
Meanwhile... Driving through the countryside this week,
there is absolutely no signs of the ice, snow that created havoc
around our state a few weeks ago... BUT... the view of downed poles
and utility linemen busily out on the rural roadways repairing,
replacing the downed electrical poles... Can still be seen. I understand
that some rural communities are just now getting their electricity
back on... If at all. The weathermen in our neck of the woods keep
telling us the Spring-like temperatures will continuing into the
weekend and into the first of next week.
A friend in Southern Oklahoma sent me a bit of Southern Oklahoma
Spring sprouting in his neck of the woods a few weeks ago. He found
a delicate yellow, blooming flower in his yard. You can see a little
bit of southern Okie Spring in the "Mailbag Section."
Lets
Talk Old Bells... How much do you know about "old bells?"
I have this old bell that I bought back in the Fall of 2001, from
a place in southern Kansas. The Bell is a little rusty, but in decent
shape (I think). Do I leave it aged as it is or clean the
rust off and paint it? Wouldn't the antique part of it be preserved
if I just left as is? It needs mounted on something, also. I don't
know what to mount it on. That's where I need your suggestions,
help. Right now this great bell sits upon my player piano at the
moment because I don't know how or where I want to mount it. I await
your "Bell Knowledge" with "Baited Bell
Breathe."
Speaking
of Bells... the first of the week we were taking a tour of this
blacktop, county road that winds north, west of Cleo Springs, in
Major County, Oklahoma. We weren't really looking for "Bells"
at the time, but this fantastic Elm Flat Independent Christian Church
Bell was mounted on a metal, welded pole outfront of this rural
country church.
I told David to "STOP!" I needed a picture of that Bell
for a friend who collects Okie Bells. Right on cue... David stops,
pulls the pickup into a parking spot... I jump out with camera in
tow, snap a few shots of this Major County, Oklahoma Bell to send
to my friend who collects bells.
As to Elm Flat... the church sets on the eastside of the
blacktop road, on the southeast corner where two country roads meet.
On the northeast corner, really close to the road, sets this old,
abandoned, concrete, building of some sort that has seen better
days. No glass sets in the windows, nor are there any doors to shutout
the elements. There are a few rural homes around at this intersection.
What I would like to know is, "Was Elm Flat a little rural
village (community) of some kind way back when?"
I don't suppose you have noticed that this newsletter actually
got sent out on Saturday instead of late Friday night. I'm just
making a few changes on delivery date to see what you all think.
Thanks! See you next weekend.

43 Wild Turkeys...

Some Colorado friends sent me this fantastic shot
of some Southwest Colorado Wildlife in their pasture! Click the

Winter
Olympics Update... Well! I guess Canada & Russia will
be sharing the Gold this year at the Winter Olympics in the figuring
skating. They say that the French Figuring Skating Judge got suspended
over the whole deal. What do you think about that?
