Oakie's NW Corner...

With the holidays just around the corner, there is a lot going on this week. Where do I begin? At the beginning, I suppose, huh?

Let me start out by telling you that I have found my copy of the "Old Fort Supply" manuscript by Wm. Hankins Hughes that was written in 1931. More of what is inside of it will have to wait until 2003, Vol. V Issues, though.

What else has been happening in NW Oklahoma. The skies have been sunny and the temps have been in the 60s. BUT... The weathermen are all saying Monday evening through Tuesday evening we are expecting a major snowstorm. That should make it great for Santa and his sleigh pulled by those famous reindeers, huh? Some of us will miss the Oklahoma snowstorm by a slim hair, because we are heading for the Rocky Mountains.

As to the earlier part of the week... I did get to spend some quality time out in the pasture with my horses & colts. They are doing great. I had my apple treats with me and had my broodmare (Cindy), two-year gelding (Moon) and long yearling (Kassie) eating out of my hands nearly at the same time. They wouldn't let any other horses come near.

Besides being out to pasture this week, I have been sleuthing in Carmen, Oklahoma searching for information concerning the Carmen IOOF Home that was dedicated back in 1907. I have updated the Carmen Home webpages for further reading. Check out all the IOOF Cemetery links while you are over there at the Alfalfal County Corner.

I know I am running late and probably overloading Y'all with info during the Christmas shopping season. I won't keep you much longer, though. Some of the stuff I have gathered will have to wait until next weekend and some will be future stories in Vol. V, 2003.

Before I head out of here and leave you to explore what I have offered, the Okie Legacy family would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas - Seasons Greetings - A Prosperous New Year in 2003. Thanks to you all for sharing your memories and Okie Legacies this past few years. I could not have done it without Y'all. Click on the photo to view our Seasons greetings to you all.

Seasons Greetings to All - And to All .... God Bless

Santa & Bubba Claus' Redistricting Update...

Okay! I got this Email Redistricting Update from Santa Claus a day or so ago. BUT ... It doesn't look like it pertains to Oklahoma, though. So... I guess Oklahoma, Colorado and other states NOT mentioned in the below Santa Email still are in Santa Claus' District, huh? Those mentioned below will now be in Bubba Claus' District.

Here is the Email from Santa ~ To: All Concerned -- From: Santa Claus
I regret to inform you that, effective immediately, I will no longer serve the states of Georgia, Florida, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, and Arkansas on Christmas Eve.
Due to the overwhelming current population of the earth, my contract was renegotiated by North American Fairies and Elves Local 209. As part of the new and better contract I also get longer breaks for milk and cookies so please keep that in mind. However, I'm certain that your children will be in good hands with your local replacement, who happens to be my third cousin, Bubba Claus. His side of the family is from the South Pole. He shares my goal of delivering toys to all the good boys and girls. However, there are a few differences between us such as the following:
      1) There is no danger of the Grinch stealing your presents from Bubba Claus. He has a gun rack on his sleigh and a bumper sticker that reads: "These toys insured by Smith and Wesson."
      2) Instead of milk and cookies, Bubba Claus prefers that children leave an RC cola and pork rinds (or a moon pie) on the fireplace. And Bubba doesn't smoke a pipe. He dips a little snuff though, so please have an empty spit can handy.
      3) Bubba Claus' sleigh is pulled by floppy-eared, flyin' coon dogs instead of reindeer. I made the mistake of loaning him a couple of my reindeer one time, and Blitzen's head now overlooks Bubba's fireplace.
      4) You won't hear "On Comet, on Cupid, on Donner and..." when Bubba Claus arrives. Instead, you'll hear, "On Earnhardt, on Andretti, on Elliott and Petty."
      5) "Ho, Ho, Ho!" has been replaced by, "Yee Haw!" And you also are likely to hear Bubba's elves respond, "I here'd dat!"
      6) As required by Southern highway laws, Bubba Claus' sleigh does have a Yosemite Sam safety triangle on the back with the words, "Back Off."
      7) The usual Christmas movie classics such as "Miracle on 34th Street" and "It's a Wonderful Life" will not be shown in your negotiated viewing area. Instead, you'll see "Boss Hogg Saves Christmas" and "Smokey and the Bandit IV" featuring Burt Reynolds as Bubba Claus and dozens of state patrol cars crashing into each other.
      8) Merry Christmas y'all...

Sincerely Yours,
Santa Claus
Member of North American Fairies & Elves, Local 209

Twelve Days of Christmas

Have you ever thought or looked at this famous Christmas song this way before? ...

On the 1st day of Christmas my true love gave to me... A Partridge in a Pear Tree
The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, whose birthday we celebrate on December 25, the first day of Christmas. In the song, Christ is symbolically presented as a mother partridge that feigns injury to decoy predators from her helpless nestlings, recalling the expression of Christ's sadness over the fate of Jerusalem: "Jerusalem! Carmen Home Memories... "My mother and her siblings were in the home (Carmen IOOF Home) you featured on your web site. They were Hattie, Irene, Milton and Ernest Cox. They would have lived there for several years, beginning in the early '20s. Any info from anyone who would remember or have any connection would be great. Hattie and Ernest are still alive and always wanted to come back to visit. Hattie (84) and in great spirits and health. Mother speaks of carrying lunch to school in a lard bucket and being called 'the home kids.' Also, getting hard candy at Christmas. She has lots more memories if anyone would care to hear!
"My daughter in law is into genealogy and has discovered the 'Home' my mother and her siblings were in was in Carmen, Oklahoma. It is on the net, under OkieLegacy-Carmen Odd Fellowage Orphanage. I had hoped to possibly reach others who had lived there (or their progeny). I know my mother, who is 84 but very bright and alert, would love to hear from anyone. My grandmother took the children out of the home when she remarried and they all moved to California. My mother married my dad (they were married for 60 years) and had a busy life as a navy wife. As I mentioned, mother would love to go back and visit the home, but with times so uncertain, I am not sure that will happen." -- Phyllis Lund at phyllisnsf@aol.com

Japanese Balloon Bombs of WWII... "I have just downloaded your excellent article on the above subject. Do you know if there is a list of balloons that were recovered or investigated? I remember a military (Army) investigation of a balloon that had landed in a tree in a highly wooded area immediately across the road from where I was raised. I don't know the date but probably in 1944 or 1945. (I was about 10 years old at the time). I believe it was a Japanese balloon because the military used an abandoned logging road, immediately across our driveway, to locate the balloon. It apparently was spotted from the air. A site on a nearby high hill overlooking the wooded area was used by a team of soldiers that could actually see the balloon caught in a tree. By using a walki-talki they directed the team across from our driveway to the actual balloon. I saw the team on the hill from our school bus. Although my sister and I didn't dare talk to the soldiers at the barricaded logging road, we persuaded our father to see what was going on. He talked to the soldiers and they said (in confidence) that a balloon had been spotted in a tree and they were bringing it out. I realize this isn't much to go on, but if a list of balloon investigations is available I could probably pinpoint the site. The incident occurred in
central Pierce County, Washington, about three miles south of the small town or Orting and about 20 miles east of Fort Lewis. Can you help me in this research? Can you point me to the federal office
that may maintain such a listing? Is Fort Lewis research/library a good place to start? Thank you for any assistance."-- Donald R. White at PortsWest@aol.com

Surname: King of Nye, Oklahoma... "I have old pictures of my dad supposedly taken in Nye,OK. The pictures were taken around the early 1900s or when Oklahoma was still Indian Territory. His name was George Warren King. He lived there in Nye, supposedly with his family of a wife and two daughters. Anybody know anything about him or his family. He moved to McAlester a few years later. Interesting web site!" -- George W. King
Exceptionally Kind Okies... "It is just amazing how things work. After my inquiry about "Old Fort Supply" and your very kind and prompt replies, I mentioned your web site and your helpfulness to several 'Fort Supplians' and through some recollections and visits, we came up with a copy of the Hughes Transcipt. So, with your help and a few emails we have it in our possession. Mr. Golden sent a kind email and let me know he too would make a copy for me. What a joy to know there are so many kind and thoughtful people in this world. Hope I can repay you for your kindness. I read the Hughes Transcript and it deals with earlier times than 1909+. It was very interesting and I am so glad that thru this search I got to read it, but it didn't have the answers I had hoped. Nevertheless, it has been a blessing to get aquainted with some exceptionally kind Okies! Thank you again so very much for your labors. Happy Holidays and God bless." -- Debbie
Old Fort Supply Manuscript... "It was I that sent the referenced email to you several months ago, and subsequently mailed you a copy of the Hughes Manuscript, along with a copy of the Postcard Book I assembled for City Hall at Ft. Supply. I still enjoy and look forward to receiving the newsletter each week. I know a lot of work and effort goes into each issue, many hours I'm sure. It is really appreciated on this end! Have A Great Holiday Season." -- L. E. Golden, Ft. Supply, OK
Old Fort Supply by Hughes... "I was not the one who mailed you the info you mention, but it is possible that the University at Stillwater would have a copy on file. University of Oklahoma at Norman also has an extensive collection of Western History. Good luck. If someone gets a copy, I would be interested in reading one. Thanks." -- Evelyn Reed.
Dunning, Pearson, Ison... "Message Board Post: It took me a while, but I now have a complete family! Mattie Pearson married Henry Harrison Dunning in Iowa. The removed to OK after the turn of the century, and a daughter Marguerite was born in 1914. Son Max in 1918. Mattie & Henry are buried in Alva, Woods Co. OK. The daughter Marguerite married Lonnie Ison about 1937. Does anyone know these families? I have extensive Pearson ancestry to share and would like to know more about the Dunning family (I have some information on Henry H. Dunnings ancestry)." -- Sharyl Ferrall at ferrall@mtaonline.net
Thank You... "It was because of your wonderful Okie Legacy website that I found the Dunning-Ison Marriage a week ago. A year ago I didn't even know Marguerite existed and had no idea of who her father was, other than his surname. Little by little I am bringing down the walls of this family with the generous help of people who transcribe & put records on-line. Merry Christmas!" -- Sharyl

Grandmother's Kolaches... "I found your site (HurtLegacy - Kolaches) looking for 'Cottage Cheese Kolaches.' My Grandma Dolezal used to make them when I was a kid. She lived in Perry, OK. I always spent my summers there on her farm. I remember the way her kitchen smelled on baking day. I wish now I had payed more attention to how she cooked all those wonderful goodies! This is a nice site. Keep up the good work." -- Angela Dolezal at starrshine82@hotmail.com

Wild Bill's Ghosttown Adventures & Albert Schwab... "It's been a while since I've visited your site. I'm impressed! I was born in Tulsa. My mom's side of the family are all from Oklahoma. My Uncle, Albert Schwab was one of the Medal of Honor recipients from Oklahoma in WWII. Camp Schwab Marine Base in Okinawa was named after him." -- Wild Bill at wildbill@billcarr.com - Wild Bill's Ghosttown Adventures

Garrison Homepage & USS Card CVE-11... "My name is Jo and I am originally from Pauls Valley. I live in southeast Alabama now and love the climate (30 miles from Florida). This is the Homepage of Duane J. Garrison and he also does the web site USS CARD CVE-11 Story of a Great Ship for his WW2 shipmates reunion association." -- Jo
Patti Page Bio... "Like so many other Cinderella stories (but this one is without the evil stepmother or stepsisters), Patti’s origins were indeed humble. Her father was a section hand on the Midland Valley Railroad and his earnings often provided little more than the bare essentials. Patti, second from the youngest of eleven children, was often without shoes and playing in the fields while her mother and sisters picked cotton in Claremore, Oklahoma, where she was born Clara Ann Fowler in November, 1927....." MORE.....
Season of Epiphany... "Epiphany is the climax of the Christmas Season and the Twelve Days of Christmas, which are counted from December 25th until January 5th. The day before Epiphany is the twelfth day of Christmas, and is sometimes called Twelfth Night, an occasion for feasting in some cultures. In some cultures, the baking of a special King's Cake is part of the festivities of Epiphany (a King's Cake is part of the observance of Mardi Gras in French Catholic culture of the Southern USA)....." MORE.....
Twelve Days of Christmas... ".....Contrary to much popular belief, these are not the twelve days before Christmas, but in the Western Church are the twelve days from Christmas until the beginning of Epiphany (January 6th; the 12 days count from December 25th until January 5th)..... The popular song "The Twelve Days of Christmas" is usually seen as simply a nonsense song for children. However, some have suggested that it is a song of Christian instruction dating to the 16th century religious wars in England, with hidden references to the basic teachings of the Faith. They contend that it was a mnemonic device to teach the catechism to youngsters. The "true love" mentioned in the song is not an earthly suitor, but refers to God Himself. The "me" who receives the presents refers to every baptized person who is part of the Christian Faith. Each of the "days" represents some aspect of the Christian Faith that was important for children to learn." More.....
Beaver County Court Records... "We visited the Beaver County court house and Library in October, 2002. They still have the original marriage licenses in a vault for family members if they want them. We also picked up copies of our family members deeds that had there land patent number on them. Our family was some of the first to settle in Beaver County. Slapout was the place they first staked a claim on land. Our family members were William Arthur Scott & Elender Walls, Everett Emery Scott and Viola Anita Walls, James Adelbert Scott, Walter O. Scott & Mary J. Miller, George Jasper Scott & Ida May Abbott, Ethelyn Pearl Scott & James Simpson Jr. Liggett, Mable Ettie Scott & George Nicholas Liggett. All of these family members were given 160 acres of land per family. Familty member marriages were Ethel Elmira Liggett to Levi Walton Bush, Hazel Ann Scott to Robbie Roy Black. These family members children are in the Beaver County Book listed as the first to go to there schools. If any one has information on them please contact me because I have a lot to share." -- Darlene Scott at scottkids99@aol.com
