Oakie's NW Corner...

You know how when someone travels from one place to the other that it seems like they bring a change in the weather with them?

That was the way it seemed last Saturday evening when our oldest son, Michael, flew into Oklahoma City from Washington, DC. It was as if the sunshine, mild 70 degree weather was just waiting for him to arrive in Oklahoma and end the cloudy, dreary, cold weather we were having for October. The sunshine lingered for a week, but the son headed off to New Mexico the middle of the week.

Tuesday of this week Oklahoman's went to the Polls and among all the elected officials -- voters declared Democrat Brad Henry to be their Governor in a close race between Republican Steve Largent.

The latter part of this week found me helping my horse friends sort their quarterhorses during the sunshine in Northwest Oklahoma this week... after consulting the Farmers Almanac, of course.

My POW WWII web pages brought in an interesting request... Dale's father was stationed as an US Army Officer, camp commander at a POW camp near Florence, Arizona during WWII. His dad kept and framed a painting done by a German POW, Hans Pfaff, that was stationed at the camp. It was signed by Herr Pfaff and dated Nov. 27, 1944. Dale is interested in located the Pfaff family and returning the painting to them. You can read more about the painting in the Mailbag & Link Corner below.

Another interesting Email came from Fred Neuman concerning his Music Store in Alva, Oklahoma. Do some of you Northwest Oklahoma's remember when his music store was located in an old remodeled Barbershop just west of the Central National Bank on Flynn Avenue?

The memories are vague with me, but I do remember walking from Skyline Drive on the west-end of town - East down Flynn Avenue towards the NW corner of the downtown square in Alva. This was before I had a drivers license and walking was my main transportation back in those days of my youth. Anyway, Neuman's Music store was where I bought me my first guitar. I never really learned to play it, though. I just kind of plucked, strummed the strings. Why did I buy the guitar? I don't really know why. I spent my firecracker money on the guitar instead of buying firecrackers. Go figure! You can read more about Neuman in the Mailbag Corner.

Another reader sent me some of her memories of when she worked for Bill Arganbright and his Realtor's office in Alva, Oklahoma. That is also in the Mailbag Corner.

Then there is the lady whose grandmother used to live in the Carmen Odd Fellows Home located north of Carmen, Oklahoma. Missy is interested in learning more about the history of the Carmen Odd Fellows Home. If anyone out there has any info to share concerning the Carmen Home, would you drop Missy an Email? Thanks!

There's more NW Oklahoma Marriages transcribed for the period of 1938 thru 1939 listed below in the NW OK Marriages Corner. Before I head out of here and let you scan the rest of the newsletter items, let me leave you with some thoughts and hope it jogs some of those memory cells out there concerning the Johnson Grocery Store on the corner of 3rd & Flynn -- Johnson Apartments at 229 Flynn -- Jett's Store. All in NW Oklahoma, Alva, Woods County. Was the Jett's Store located on the West side of the square in the middle of the block of College Avenue... OR... on the south side of the square in the middle of Barnes Avenue? Does anyone out there have any photos, stories, memories, etc... concerning these NW Oklahoma past landmarks? Thanks again for your memories. I couldn't do this without your input.

Have a great weekend -- enjoy the sunshine and mild weather while it lasts. Sounds like we have another wet cold front coming through here Monday or Tuesday. See you next weekend.

Bill Arganbright Memories... "I use to work for Bill for almost a year before my marriage in August, 1967. I had a lot of fun with him while painting the signs out on the two (2) blackboards along Oklahoma Blvd. across from the Sonic. I use to clean the offices in his little building there, re-stock the pop machine that you had to lift the top of the machine and slide the bottles on and let the neck of the bottle rest on the slide shelf, as well as take care of all the rentals (show and tell with the clients) he had. He even let me drive his beautiful Cadillac downtown to pick up the mail at the post office a couple of times and had such a big heart that he would let me go have coffee with friends now and then as I ran errands for him. He usually drove his pick up to work so that is what I usually drove to the post office. I really felt special working for him as he was quite a character. I got to know him quite well and had a good time hearing some good stories from him and his friends who came in for coffee every day. Yep, those were good times back then, when days were lazy and people were more attuned to others and their feelings. Courtesy meant a lot as well as respect for the next person. Keep up the good work with the newsletter. Love it lots." -- Genevieve

Which led me to your website... I am thinking since she was Baptized in Alva that her mother and father must have resided around or in Alva... which I did not know... Their names were Patrick McTague and Margaret McTague Bailey... Can you help me at all... I am now wanting to retrace my whole family history... as our bloodline is running thin... only 2 other members alive now. Thanks." -- Debbie Magee at MageeD1@aol.com
