Oakie's NW Corner...

It was been cloudy, drizzling weather in NW Oklahoma most of this week with very little (if any) sunshine to break the monotony of it all. I sank up to my ankles in mud when I went out into the pasture to check my horses earlier this week. That's how soggy it has become in the Northwest parts of the State. I believe that for the month of October NW Oklahoma (Alfalfa & Woods County) are reporting almost 12 inches of rain for the month. Some parts of the State in NW Oklahoma saw some freezing temperatures and a glimpse of snow for a short while this week.

Nothing much is going on except All Hallow Eve - End of October - Nov. 1, All Saints Day - Nov. 2, 1734, Daniel Boone's birthday - Nov. 4, 1879, Will Rogers birthday - Political Ads bombarding us this last week before Voting Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002 when we go to the Polls and VOTE our heart, mind and soul for those candidates to represent us in State and National offices.

Last week was Homecoming up in Northwest Oklahoma. It seems the bands, floats and crowd keep getting smaller and fewer each year. BUT... the political candidates seem to find their way to make the scene and throw their candy to the unsuspecting and captive audience on this October 26th, cloudy, chilly Saturday in Northwest Oklahoma on the square of Downtown Alva. I will sprinkle some of those pictures throughout the newsletter.

As I was typing, transcribing some more NW OK marriages, I ran across a few names some of you old timers and northwest Oklahomans might remember. Some of you will remember Bill Arganbright. He was a good friend of my Dad's, Gene McGill. Arganbright was an auctioneer and realtor until his death a while back. Did you know that Bill was a brother to Nora Dean and they were both the children of Mr. and Mrs. Herrick Arganbright? Anyway, Nora Dean Arganbright married Harold W. Hartwig October 9, 1938 and Billy M. Arganbright was Hartwig's best man. Their wedding announcement is listed in the NW OK Marriages of 1938 below.

OSU vs. Texas A.M. football and Homecoming takes place this weekend in Stillwater, Oklahoma. OU vs. Colorado football crowds the campus scene in Norman, Oklahoma.

Wherever you are, stay reasonably warm and dry as you can. If you have any 1920s Oklahoma Marriages announcements that you would like to share with us here at "The OkieLegacy," please send me a copy. I will see you next weekend... around the same time! Thanks for letting me share a part of my Oklahoma with you!

Adventures of Colonel Daniel Boone... "The publication of Daniel Boone's Adventures in 1784 served to immortalize Boone the frontiersman as an American legend and a true folk hero. Published by John Filson on Boone's 50th birthday, the narrative describes in Boone's own words his exploits in the Kentucky wilderness from May, 1769 to October of 1782. The Adventures of Col. Daniel Boone was subsequently published in The American Magazine in 1787 and again in a book by George Imlay in 1793. The latter publication is the source wherein we present the complete text."
Halloween Legacy..."The word itself, Halloween, actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1, "All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. But, in the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New year. One story says that, on that day, the disembodied spirits of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the afterlife. The Celts believed all laws of space and time were suspended during this time, allowing the spirit world to intermingle with the living. Naturally, the still-living did not want to be possessed. So on the night of October 31, villagers would extinguish the fires in their homes, to make them cold and undesirable. They would then dress up in all manner of ghoulish costumes and noisily paraded around the neighborhood, being as destructive as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to possess."
