Oakie's NW Corner...

I have been waiting patiently for my replacement DSL modem to be delivered this week. You see... Last week's thunderstorms in the northwest part of the state zapped my old modem. We are speedily zooming online on this Friday afternoon.

I have also been doing some more transcribing on NW OK Marriages of 1930-45. There is a particular marriage ceremony that I found interesting and wanting to share the wording with you. I do not know the exact date, but believe the date to be around the 1936 or 1937. Can someone out there help me with this date?

It concerns the Herold-Varner - ca. 1936-37 marriage that took place on a Saturday afternoon, when Johnnie M. Varner, Alva, and Miss Lillian May Herold, Alva, were united in marriage by Judge J. J. Glaser in the Review-Courier's public wedding on the court house steps. The marriage was pronounced by Judge Glaser in the following words...

"My friends, in this hour when you are about to take the step which will result in the establishment of a new home in the land, I would have you enter upon this new relationship not in sport or frivolity, but rather seriously and fully realizing all it shall mean.

"The establishment of a new home in the land is of great importance and grave concern, and incurs great responsibilities.

"It is a matter of importance and concern not only to you two fine young people, but it is of grave concern to the community where you shall reside - of grave concern to the state and to the nation. Whether a home is foundationed in love is of great importance.

"Whether that home shall be one where love and harmony shall be enthroned depends entirely upon you. If love and harmony shall not reign supreme, the consequences can not be confined to the limits of the sphere of the influence of your own lives, but must of necessity affect many others.

"This is an occasion for joy and happiness, certainly, but it also is an occasion for serious mindedness.

"In anticipation of the happiness that shall be yours, and in the full realization of the responsibilities that shall rest upon you, I now ask:

"Mr. Varner, do you take this woman to be your wedded wife? Do you promise to love, honor and cherish her - forsaking all others, be faithful unto her in the love and affection of your heart so long as you shall both live?

"Miss Herold, do you take this man to be your wedded husband? Do you promise to love, honor and cherish him - forsaking all others, be faithful unto him in the love and affection of your heart so long as you shall both live?

"By virtue of your mutual, promises, and by authority vested in me as judge of the county court of Woods County, Oklahoma, it is my good pleasure, and I now pronounce you husband and wife.

"May the blessing of God be upon you. May long years together be yours - crowned with peace and contentment - and may love reign supreme in your lives to the end."

This week maybe someone else will find some more northwestern names, marriages and memories to help jog some more of those good-old-day memories. Have you noticed that most of the young people of the 1930s graduated from Northwestern High School? Was that what they called the old Alva high school at one time? Was it on the Northwestern Campus? Lots of questions and not enough answers to go around, huh? I'm sure most of you NW Okies will recognize some of these surnames... Schuhmacher, Ewalt, Vinson, etc...

Thanks for the corrections and information you sent in this week concerning the Obits that were in last week's newsletter. Take care and have a safe, cool, Fall weekend ahead.

My Grandmother...
Constance Estelle Warwick

I just love this old photograph of my grandmother and the dress she was posing in. Do you have any old photos that you would like to share with us? Send them this way. What year do you suppose this photo was taken?
Grandmother must have been a young teacher or student attending Northwestern Normal School.
