Oakie's NW Corner...

It's been a quiet tame week since I got back to Oklahoma. No Bears to be seen anywhere. Almost... Too Quiet! We did have some thunderstorms come through Wednesday (or was it Thursday) night bringing with it some cool, Fall air. Was this the same front that dropped 20 inches of snow on the submit of the San Juan Mountains Thursday?

Colorado Rocky Bear MemorialSome remnants of Colorado... Is this the Rockhenge Colorado Bear Memorial that has been seen hiding behind a scrub oak in SW Colorado? Click the photo to view larger view. The bears just seemed to collect at this rocky mountain spot. So... Is this the rockhenge bear that marks the vicinity where the Back Door Bear and Daisy's Bear once stepped, rested or squatted..

This week NW history takes us through some more of the NW OK marriages of 1930-45 that I have been transcribing. I found a couple of NW Oklahoma Obits stuck in the album. There were no dates with them, but the they were in with the marriages of 1935-1936 dates. Let's just say they date between 1930-1945 somewhere. Maybe someone out there will recognize the Obits and write-in and let us know the exact dates. Thanks!

Graveside Services Are Held for Alva Pioneer Resident
(after 1947) --
Graveisde services were held Monday morning for Patrick O'Neil who was found dead in a chair in his home at 1225 Santa Fe St., late Sunday afternoon. Requiem mass will be read for the pioneer at the Sacred heart Catholic Church at 7:30 Tuesday morning by Father Leo Claus, pastor.

O'Neil was born March 1, 1878 in County Cork, Ireland. He came to Oklahoma in 1899 and resided on a farm northwest of Alva until he retired in 1947 at which time he moved to town.
The body was found in a chair at the home and the coroner pronouned O'Neil had died from natural causes, presumably a heart attack, and that the had been dead 24 hours. It was apparent he had died in the night since, when was found, the lights in his house were still on.
The pioneer Woods County farmer is survived by a brother, Dan O'Neil and several nieces and nephews.
Following the graveside services burial was made in the Catholic cemetery here.

Death Takes Mrs. F. Fash - Funeral To Be Held Sunday
(Dec. 24, 1942) --

Mrs. Fred Fash      The death of Mrs. Fred Fash long time resdient of Woods County and retired school teacher, occurred at 4 a.m. today at her home, 1039 Eighth St. She had been ill for several months.
Mrs. Fash was born in 1877 near Iola, Kans., and came to Woods County at the opening of the Cherokee Strip, settling with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Hankins, on a farm in what is now known as the Hankins District. She was married in September, 1897.

The quiet, tameness of Oklahoma has this writer's mind filled with few words this week. BUT... I did get some interesting email inquiries and a few NEW subscriptions this week. The inquiries concern the Alva Roller Mills and the 45th infantry Division Thunderbirds and Battery B.

Does anyone out there have any information concerning the 45th Infantry Division Thunderbirds & Battery "B"? If you have information on the 45th Infantry Division Thunderbirds and Battery 'B' or Tom Lewis that you would be willing to share with World War II Recreation Association, please Contact Eric in the Mailbag Corner below.

This next inquiry concerns the Alva Roller Mills during the late 1920s-30s. Barbara Walters Hodges is looking for, "Information on a Richard Hart whose father was head of Alva Roller Mills in the late '20s - early '30s. Richard's mother sold a baby bassinette to my mother and every baby in our family since has used it."

So... You like my wildlife, bear stories, huh? Another reader wrote of her wildlife experience in Colorado mountains and wished she could have been there with me. If any more readers have some interesting wildlife stories to share, please send them to Linda at paristimes@earthlink.net.

I am going to end here with this little Fall update... The tips of the San Juan Mountains have been getting a light dusting of snow this week. Have a cool, beautiful Fall weekend and week ahead. See you next week.

Mailbag & Links Corner....

Slapout, USA... Slapout, Illinois -- "You mentioned Slapout and wondered about other towns with that name. Well, Marion County, Illinois had a Slapout Road which went to Slapout which was just a wide place in the road with Slapout Store run by a Mr. Spurgeon. Earl Purdue mentions in in his book, Early Days on Horse Creek. I lived nearby. Slapout is gone and the road is now called just the 161 Extension. It was probably part of the old National Road which ran from Washington, DC to St. Louis. Holtville/Slapout, Alabama Fire Department... The only other town that we can find with the Slapout name is in Slapout, Oklahoma." -- Contact John Furby

WWII Recreation Assoc... I am with the World War II Recreation Association, and am doing research for our website: www.45thdivision.org . On this page of Your Website is a small reference to Battery 'B', 45th Division - VeteransForeignWars.html. Do you have any more information on Battery 'B', or Tom Lewis that you could share with us. Thank you for any help you can give. I am interested in any and all information on the 45th Infantry Division Thunderbirds. I appreciate the mention." -- Contact Eric Rieth, WIIRA, Pres.
Keep Up Great Work... "You have had some wonderful newsletters in the last 3 weeks and the synopsis of the trial and the way you presented it in both the last issues is very good. I liked your organization and synopsis very much - both of the story and the witnesses! Some interesting revelations by the last few witnesses too. Really keeps a person intrigued or gets them interested again if their interest had waned. Keep up the wonderful work. You are getting better and better as time goes on. Keep those nature stories coming in also (well, from a safe distance, that is... snicker)."
Morland Reunion in Alva... "My mother, Leta Jacqueline Morland, lived in Freedom (Oklahoma) until the age of 14. In 1934 she moved with her father, Archie Morland, to Colorado. We just had our family reunion in Alva. Part of our family stayed at the lodge out near the (Albaster) Caverns. We had a wonderful time there." -- Contact Judi Taug

NO Solicitation Law... "Oklahoma Attorney General - If you want to add your name to the 'No (telephone) Call' list in Oklahoma, read the exceptions at this Link -- Click Here. Remember, this 'No Call' list will not take effect until about February 1, 2003 so you can bet these obnoxious solicitors will be scrambling until then to try to establish themselves as one of the exemptions to the law!"

Hart's & Alva Roller Mills... "A cousin in Oklahoma City sent us this site address. I'm looking forward to delving into it in depth! I was born in Alva in 1930 to Bruce Walters and Louise Fash Walters. Their parents were Ernest and Gertrude Walters of Alva and Joseph and Anna Fash of Capron. I'm hoping to locate information on a Richard Hart whose father was head of Alva Roller Mills in the late '20s - early '30s. Richard's mother sold a baby bassinette to my mother and every baby in our family since has used it. Please put me on the list to receive your newsletter." -- Contact Barbara Walters Hodges

Anne Louthan
Others Wildlife Stories... "Your bear encounters are just thrilling, but I don't think I would want to be in the middle of it - thank-you very much - tee hee. I had a thrilling encounter with a coyote in the Rockies one year! I was watching the ....... shoot, I forget what they are called but they are small and furry little guys that stand on their back legs when they are sending out their warning and screach! Anyway, I stopped on a road looking at the mountains when these 3 critters rose up in a huge triangle and started sounding their alarms (which SHOULD have clued this idiot in but... not me.. I just stand there and say what curious critters these are). Anyway, just about the time the 3rd critter rose, I caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of my right eye so turned toward it. There was a coyote not more than about 3-5 feet from me - TRYING to stalk it's breakfast (not me) ... but to no avail. I was so surprised, I barely was able to grab my camera and take a picture as he was leaving - and then you can see him kind of slinking toward the valley again (and probably saying some pretty nasty things to me for scaring off his meal!) Anyway, that was a complete day of wonderful encounters with all kinds of wonderful critters in their habitat - some big and some small but all magical!"
Szkudlarek of Nebraska... "My husband's great-great grandfather is Valentine KOPERSKI who married Josephine SZKUDLAREK, daughter of Michael SZKUDLAREK and Marianna. I believe Josephine is Magdaline SZKUDLAREK's sister that you have in your database. We have been looking for the exact spelling of Michael's wife. Did you find the marriage information in Farwell, Nebraska?" -- Contact Ardelle Koperski
