Oakie's NW Corner...
It's been a quiet tame week since I got back to Oklahoma. No Bears
to be seen anywhere. Almost... Too Quiet! We did have some thunderstorms
come through Wednesday (or was it Thursday) night bringing with
it some cool, Fall air. Was this the same front that dropped 20
inches of snow on the submit of the San Juan Mountains Thursday?
Some
remnants of Colorado... Is this the Rockhenge Colorado Bear
Memorial that has been seen hiding behind a scrub oak in SW Colorado?
Click the photo to view larger view. The bears just seemed to collect
at this rocky mountain spot. So... Is this the rockhenge bear that
marks the vicinity where the Back Door Bear and Daisy's Bear once
stepped, rested or squatted..
This week NW history takes us through some more of the NW OK marriages
of 1930-45 that I have been transcribing. I found a couple of NW
Oklahoma Obits stuck in the album. There were no dates with them,
but the they were in with the marriages of 1935-1936 dates. Let's
just say they date between 1930-1945 somewhere. Maybe someone out
there will recognize the Obits and write-in and let us know the
exact dates. Thanks!
Graveside Services Are Held for Alva Pioneer Resident
(after 1947) --
Graveisde services were held Monday
morning for Patrick O'Neil who was found dead in a chair in his
home at 1225 Santa Fe St., late Sunday afternoon. Requiem mass will
be read for the pioneer at the Sacred heart Catholic Church at 7:30
Tuesday morning by Father Leo Claus, pastor.
O'Neil was
born March 1, 1878 in County Cork, Ireland. He came to Oklahoma
in 1899 and resided on a farm northwest of Alva until he retired
in 1947 at which time he moved to town.
The body was found in a chair at
the home and the coroner pronouned O'Neil had died from natural
causes, presumably a heart attack, and that the had been dead 24
hours. It was apparent he had died in the night since, when was
found, the lights in his house were still on.
The pioneer Woods County farmer is
survived by a brother, Dan O'Neil and several nieces and nephews.
Following the graveside services burial was made in the Catholic
cemetery here.
Death Takes Mrs. F. Fash - Funeral To Be Held Sunday
(Dec. 24, 1942) --
The death of Mrs. Fred Fash long time resdient of Woods County and
retired school teacher, occurred at 4 a.m. today at her home, 1039
Eighth St. She had been ill for several months.
Mrs. Fash was born in 1877 near Iola,
Kans., and came to Woods County at the opening of the Cherokee Strip,
settling with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Hankins,
on a farm in what is now known as the Hankins District. She was
married in September, 1897.
The quiet, tameness of Oklahoma has this writer's mind filled with
few words this week. BUT... I did get some interesting email inquiries
and a few NEW subscriptions this week. The inquiries concern the
Alva Roller Mills and the 45th infantry Division Thunderbirds and
Battery B.
Does anyone out there have any information concerning the 45th
Infantry Division Thunderbirds & Battery "B"?
If you have information on the 45th Infantry Division Thunderbirds
and Battery 'B' or Tom Lewis that you would be willing
to share with World War II Recreation Association, please
Contact Eric in the Mailbag Corner below.
This next inquiry concerns the Alva Roller Mills during the late
1920s-30s. Barbara Walters Hodges is looking for, "Information
on a Richard Hart whose father was head of Alva Roller Mills in
the late '20s - early '30s. Richard's mother sold a baby bassinette
to my mother and every baby in our family since has used it."
So... You like my wildlife, bear stories, huh? Another reader wrote
of her wildlife experience in Colorado mountains and wished she
could have been there with me. If any more readers have some interesting
wildlife stories to share, please send them to Linda at paristimes@earthlink.net.
I am going to end here with this little Fall update... The tips
of the San Juan Mountains have been getting a light dusting of snow
this week. Have a cool, beautiful Fall weekend and week ahead. See
you next week.
