Oakie's NW Corner...

I did not forget you last Friday night, July 5, 2002. After spending a glorious 4th of July, Independence Day Celebration on the Mall of Washington, DC, we were headed on the 5th of July towards Virginia Beach for the weekend of sun, sand and relaxation after a steamy, humid 4th in Washington, DC. It was all fantastic!

We even made a stop in Jamestown and Yorktown, Virginia to discovery how the first settlers made it from England and Yorktown where the final battle of the Revolutionary war was fought around 1781. I will gather all those notes together for next week's newsletter.

I did not bring my digital camera connector to connect my digital camera to my laptop, so the pictures of our trip to DC, Virginia Beach and Jamestown Settlement will follow in the next few weeks.

Tonight as I write this we are resting our weary bodies after traveling the Virginia and DC freeways today. Tonight we are in Georgetown at the Georgetown Inn, in DC. Tomorrow evening we catch our flight out of the DC airport back to Oklahoma via Cincinnati, Ohio. It will be good to get back home where I understand the traffic and have some open spaces to move more freely. I loved it all, though! Don't get me wrong there! I love a challenge and seeing new things, places, and people, cultures.

We have had some more memory jogs concerning the Alva Presbytarian Church Living Christmas Tree. Norman says, "The first row, second from left is the person formerly known as Fritz Snipple." You can view the picture over to the right with what we know so far.

I am out of here for the night to catch some rest before our flight tomorrow evening. I will be back next Friday, regular time with photos and stories of our trip. Thanks for hanging in there and being so understanding and having patience with this NW Okie.

Wiebener-Cowan-Day Reunion... Fern Lucille (Wiebener) Smith will be 90 on July 10, 2002. She was born near and raised, largely, in Alva. Her parents were Frederick, 'Fritz', Wiebener and Hazel Amanda (Cowan) Day. Her grandfather and greatgrandfather were among the cattlemen of the Eagle Chief Creek and Comanche Pool Cattle Company. A reception will be held in the old Alva POW Camp Gymnasium, now the Kiowa, Kansas, Community Center, on Saturday, July 13th, 2002 at 1- 4PM. Please come." -- Contact Tony Smith

4th of July Celebration... We had a fairly quiet day here; our fireworks were the night before, after the local ballteam's game. Their park is right down the street from us about 3/4 of a mile. I generally walk over a few houses to the GF Business machine co. and sit on their front steps to watch the fireworks because the tree nextdoor blocks a lot of the "lower hung" fireworks now. Years ago they had another company do them, they shot them way up high, and you could see them for miles, but the past 8-10 years the fireworks have been a lot lower when they exploded so I went down the street where there are no trees blocking the view." -- Betty

Historical Markers... "For the past two years I have been researching the historical markers of
Oklahoma. One particular marker that has been eluding me is the marker for The Battle of Turkey Creek. I came upon your newsletter as I was continuing my search and noticed you made reference to the battle. I hope that I am not imposing but would request any information that you might have on this marker. It would also help if I could also find the location. I am planning to visit each marker and site in the state sometime next
spring. So far I have located over 450 markers and have recorded the contents of approximately 375. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated." -- Contact Sam
Family Surnames: Briggs... "Just found this site maybe someone can help. Looking for Albert G. (A.G.) Briggs and or Cohn (Conn) to have been in Texas prior to 1880. Looking now for burial site of Martha A. Briggs died est 1879 in Lamar Co." -- Contact Gail
