Oakie's NW Corner...
What's going on this week? What winter-red wheat there is
to harvest in the northwest area of Oklahoma that farmers haven't
grazed, cut or plowed under is finding it's way to the grain elevators.
I do not know at this writing what the yields are, but they "ain't-high."
Usually before now you see lots of combines, farm trucks, and harvestors
on the country roads, but it has only been light traffic so far.
If some of you NW Okies out there find out what the wheat yields
are in your area, E-mail me the results to share with our readers.
Thanks!
This Friday I gave (and survived) a short demo and history
of The Okie Legacy and ParisTimes.com
at a forum in Tulsa on Preserving Your Heritage. I say survived...
Because... if you knew me very well -- you would know that I am
NOT one to get up in front of a group and speak. I would rather
write.
Anyway... they spoke about Genealogy on the Internet -- Making
Memory Boxes, sharing memories with grandparents, grandchildren
-- Storytelling as a unique way to preserve family heritage --Tombstone
Transcription Project that is in the works with OK Family community
Education clubs for a project for the State's 2007's birthday on
tombstone genealogy/family heritage implications. I was the next
to the last speaker -- speaking about my genealogy and Okie Legacy
pages. What I realized was... that my webpages incorporated everything
that the speakers before spoke about.
As I said earlier... I am not a speaker! I'm not comfortable upfront
doing the talking. BUT... I did come through without a scrape or
blemish! What I really like doing is... heading to the Oklahoma
Historical Society -- searching, reading through the old newspaper
archives they have collected from across the state. Then writing
about it!
Remember Beegle Bros. Drugstore... The grandson of Bert
Beegle had signed my guestbook and mentioned that he had read on
one of my Grandpa's Legacy
pages about a 1943 old Alva news article concerning a
Famous Throw where a ball cleared the street and hit on top
of the old Beegle Cafe on the south side of the square. If you Click
'43 Kings of Sports
scroll down to Famous Throw or use the Edit/Find on your
browser to find on the page... "old beegle cafe",
you will read the article that caught his eye..."The ball
cleared the street and hit on top of the old Beegle Cafe on the
south side. The cafe ws owned by the father of Andy and Bert Beegle
esteemed Alva druggists."
Anyway, I corresponded with John (son of Ralph and grandson
of Bert Beegle) to inquire about the location of the Beegle
Cafe on the southside of the square. I also checked out my Woods
County history book for any Beegle's mentioned in it. There was
Adam Beegle and his family mentioned on page
53 & page 54
of the Pioneers Footprints Across Woods County.
John wrote back and gave me some background on his family and also
mentioned that Bert ( a.k.a. John H. Beegle) and Andy Beegle
owned their own drug store known as Beegle Brothers Drug Store
which was on the north side of the square (he thinks). John
did remember a cafe called Pangburn's Cafe that ws owned
by friends of the family with maybe some family connections also.
The location of the Beegle Brothers Drug Store... According
to John, when they would come to Alva from Norman, they would drive
through Ponca City and on west to Alva. When they arrived in Alva
on highway 64 (Oklahoma Blvd) they would pass a college,
Northwestern (Castle
on the Hill), on the left -- turn right on College Avenue (6th
Street) heading north for a couple of blocks to the street named
after a tree (Locust) where his grandparents lived.
For those of you who don't know Alva's Streets... The East-West
streets crossing College Avenue (North-South street) as you
head North are... Maple, Locust, Church, Center, Barnes (southside
of square), Flynn (northside of square), Choctaw, Santa
Fe, Mill. The downtown square is located between 6th Street on the
west, 4th Street on the East.and Government Street. (Or... whatever
the name of that street that runs in front of the Post Office and
just east of Fifth Street.) Anyway it splits the square in half
with the Courthouse & Sheriff's office on the West end of the
square and the Post Office, City offices, Police and Fire Station
on the East end of square.
Back to Beegle's Drug Store... According to John's seven-decades
of memories, going to the square from his grandparents' house he
remembers arriving at the square -- passing Pangburn's Cafe
on the left -- turning right at the next street -- in the middle
of that block on the left was Beegle Brothers Drug Store.
He also mentioned... "It seems to me that the Opera
house was on or just off the south side of the square. If you stood
in front of the drug store and looked across the square slightly
to the left you would be looking in the direction of the opera house."
Another memory John had was that his father's brother, Horace,
was a history buff and quite a sports fan. Horace it seems reported
local sporting events for a paper there and at night he would work
as the night manager for a pool hall somewhere in Alva.
Pioneer Footprints - Beegle Info... The Pioneer Footprints
pages backup John's memories. So, John, if you are out there reading
this -- the following is what I put together from the story that
Adam Beegle's family had written and submitted....
"It was not long (after the run) before
the father and son had opened a restaurant on the south side of
the square....."
"After their father's restaurant no longer
required their help, Bert began working for the Share Brothers
general store, and Andy worked for Mr. Hatfield, setting type
for the early day newspaper printed by Mr. Hatfield. Later he
worked for J. W. Monfort, studying at nights to become a pharmacist.
After passing the state board he went to Blackwell, OK, to go
in partnership with Mr. Loomis and they operated the L & B
Drug."
"Bert had married only three years after
making the Run into Alva..... After Bert and Dell were married
in 1896 they lived in a house at the corner of Fifth and Center
and later built and moved to a new home on Locust Street."
"In 1907 Andy and Bert..... bought the Hess
and Gamble drug store on the south side of the square.....
The Beegle Brothers Drug Store operated under the name
of the Owl Drug Store for a time but changed the name to
Beegle's Drug Store when they moved to the north side
of the square."

NW Mystery Corner...
I have placed some legal terms that I found online in the "Mailbag
& Links Corner" for those who are interested. Meanwhile,
below are some filings made before, after the verdict of the jury
(12 Sept. 1911).
They are typed as written. The reason I did not scan these documents
because the copies were too light to scan to get a readable copy.
Keep in mind while reading these filings... Oklahoma was a young
State (4 years-old in 1911).
On the 11 September 1911... a Motion
& Request for Special Instructions (for Judge to
read to jurors) by Defendant, was filed in the District Court
of Woodward County, Oklahoma. It seems the Court refused to incorporate
defendant's instructions to the jury (E, G, H, I, J, K).
It appears that that E, G, H, and I attempted to cause the State's
expert testimony to have less weight than other testimony. As for
J... It tried to eliminate a motive in jurors deliberations.
On the 12th day of September 1911... Courts
Instructions to Jury were filed in the District Court of
Woodward County, Oklahoma.
On the 12th day of September 1911... a Verdict
was filed in the District Court of Woodward County, Oklahoma.
On the 13th day of September 1911... a Motion
for New Trial was filed in the district Court of Woodward
County, State of Oklahoma. The Defendant said the Court erred in
reading on the Instructions numbered 1, 8, 11, 12, 15. (Motion
New Trial was overruled, denied and refused, to which said judgment,
order, ruling and decision of the court the defendant at the time
excepted and saves an exception.)
On the 15th day of September 1911... a Final
Judgement and Sentence was filed in the District Court of
Woodward County, Oklahoma. In summary... N. L. Miller was charged
with the crime of murder in District Court, Woods County, Oklahoma
-- 6 Jan. 1911 Case No. 612 was filed in Woods County Court
-- 27 Feb. 1911 the defendant made application for a change
of venue and was granted application to Miller to the District Court
of Woodward County, Oklahoma -- 12 May 1911 a complete transcript
of all proceedings, pleadings and information with Order granting
change of venue was filed in the Woodward Court -- 6 Sept. 1911
the empanelling of a jury of peers of defendant was begun and completed
on 7 Sept. 1911 -- 12 Sept. 1911 after a full and
complete hearing of the evidence, instructions of the court and
argument of counsel the case was submitted to the jury and on that
same day the jury found a verdict of... "find the defendant
guilty as charged in the information and assess his punishment at
life imprisonment at hard labor. H. C. Thompson, Foreman" --
15 Sept. 1911 it was ordered, adjudged that Miller was guilty
of murder and the judgment, order and sentence of the court committed,
confined and imprisoned Miller in the state penitentiary in McAlester,
Oklahoma, at hard labor for the period of his natural life.
On the 15th day of September 1911... a Motion
and Arrest of Judgment was filed in the District Court of
Woodward County, State of Oklahoma. (Motion in Arrest of Judgment
and sentence was overruled, denied and refused, to which said judgment,
order, ruling and decision of the court the defendant at the time
excepted and saves an exception.) Order
Extending Time To Prepare and Serve Case Made.
On the 7th day of November 1911... an Application
for Extension of Time
was filed in the District Court of Woodward County, State of
Oklahoma. Defendant asking for 60 days extension to make and serve
a case-made, and that he be given until 1st day of March 1912 to
file his Petition in Error in the Criminal Court of Appeals.

This is just one of the 2002 li'l
filly colts that I have been bonding with this last week. My momma
mare (Cindy) has been letting, bringing her li'l stud colt
over my direction, also. I got to lay my hands on Doc's Li'l Al
(his name for now) like I did on Clark's li'l 2002 roan
filly colt.
The Mare & filly colt pictured
here belong to the Clark's Registered Quarterhorses, in NW Oklahoma.
Click on photo to view larger picture.
This sweet li'l roan filly below
is a curious li'l thing. When the momma mare says it is okay to
play... the li'l roan filly comes sniffing up to me and lets me
pet her nose, forehead, neck, body, hind-quarters, and even touch
the front of her legs. I even try a little of the porcupine game
and gentle nudge the colt along side in the direction I want it
to move.

Of course... We pay attention
to the momma mare and keep an eye out for her signals that it
is time to stop the playing around. For safety reasons on both
sides, of course. Do NOT want to worry that Momma Mare.
