Oakie's NW Corner...
I have been home in Oklahoma for a week now after my horses sent
me off to Parelli's horse camp, in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. I have
to say this because.... It has been hard concentrating on the murder
mystery I left hanging.
With my mind filled with new horse savvy, tools, and techniques...
I tend to eat, sleep and yes.... even dream horses. I can hardly
think or concentrate on anything else. That is why this newsletter
is so late this weekend.
We
left Pagosa Springs on Mother's Day and headed out towards Silverton,
Montrose, Lake City, Gunnison and spending the night in Salida,
Colorado. Monday morning we were on the road again and stopped and
did some photo shots, stretching around Royal Gorge near Canon City,
Colorado. That is where this mugshot was taken. Click the photo
to see a larger view of the Royal Gorge Bridge. They don't let you
drive across it anymore, but you can walk or ride the trolley across
to the other side. You can also ride a tram across. There is also
a little railway-type contraption that you can ride down to the
bottom of the gorge. To see more photos... Visit Oakie's
Webshots and check out Colorado - May 2002 and Parelli's
Horse Camp albums.
I know I'm rushing you all through this week's newsletter. Thanks
for your patience while I get back into the swing of things here.
Have a great weekend.

NW Mystery Corner...
When I got back the first part of this week, I picked up a copy
of N. L. Miller's testimony that the Oklahoma Department of Library
Archives had made me.
Just glancing through it... there are all sorts of hints and treasures
of some old businesses that were around the downtown square back
in 1910. I've even come closer to pin pointing some businesses that
were catty corner from the Old Opera House.
Such as -- The old opera house was catty-corner from Noels Livery
Stable. It sounds like that the old opera house was also on the
southside of the square, across from the republican headquarters
which was upstairs above the Union State Bank on the north side,
center of the square and across the street west was a pool hall
that N. L. Miller often frequented.
I don't have my Alva & Woods County books handy tonight as
I write this up, but if anyone out there has any information concerning
the Union State Bank, Noel's Livery Stable, please share that information
with us. I also found out from reading the transcript that there
was on the east side of the Old Opera House a veterinary. I can't
recall what the name of it is right now. As soon as the horses quit
gallouping through my brain of thoughts... maybe I can settled down
to exploring some of these Okie Legacies further.
Meanwhile, you can do some catching up and refreshing your memory
of Alva's First Homicide - 9 November 1910 (Old
Opera House Murder) and check out Miller's
Testimony.
