Oakie's NW Corner...
Some of you already know that my focus this week from dawn to dusk
has been directed to learning all I can about becoming a partner,
communicating, gaining respect and becoming the Alpha horse with
my horses. I know that I haven't talked much about them lately since
I have been glued to Alva's First Homicide - 9 November 1910.
Parelli's Horse Training Center can absolutely make a difference
in your life about who, what, how handle your horses. It is completely
a natural savvy, safe way of communicating, gaining respect and
reinforcing in a positive mode instead of beating the spirit out
of your horses and traumatizing them. I know that I will be very
particular who handles my horses from now on. Parelli's horse training
center has been a GREAT learning experience that has impacted my
life in a positive, learning environment. I am still processing
all the information that I have swimming inside my head tonight
as these tired eyes and body sit here tonight (the last day of class).
We arrived Sunday (May 5, 2002, first day) at Pat
Parelli's Natural Horse-Man-Ship for orientation around 4:00
p.m. I leased one of Parelli's horses while I was there.
The Level 1 -Partnership... is mainly about educating the
human partner how to bond, communicate and gain respect from their
four-legged partner (the Horse). Enabling the human to become a
better trusted, alpha leader for their horse.
Our day began early Monday morning at dawn. Monday and Tuesday
seemed like four days total of lessons, games and working with our
horses. Sixteen students from all over the USA signed up for the
first Level 1 course held May 5 thru 10, 2002. It was like a positive,
extended support family made up of instructors and students... Each
giving their support, feedback and encouragement. It will be a week
I shall never forget and shall cherish. The students were of all
ages, young and old. We had a great group (or teamwork of individuals)
from New Mexico, Iowa, Wisconsin, Colorado, Conneticut, Louisiana,
South Carolina, Wyoming, Idaho, Pennsylvania, and Utah. The instructors,
personnel were from Australia.
Each student was responsible for seeing that their horse was fed,
watered. We each shovel shit and cleaned our horse's pen once a
day. The 7000+elevation in the SW Colorado Rocky mountains was a
bit breathless on this middle-aged horse lover. It had me panting
quite a bit Sunday. It was a little better after a few days of getting
acustom to working in it.
Our day began each day around 7:00 a.m. and ended around 9:00 p.m.
We were on our feet most of the day except for an hour breakfast,
lunch and dinner. Our last day of Friday, May 10, 2002 with a little
ceremony, a certificate stating that we attended the weeklong Level
1 course.
Now... I can't wait to get back home and begin with lesson 1 thru
21 on my three (maybe four) horses. I am hoping that my broodmare
Cindy will have her 2002 colt around Mother's Day.
By the way... Happy Mother's Day to all the mother's out there.
Don't forget your mother this Sunday, May 12, 2002.
I'm out of here for tonight and will return next week with more
pictures and continue with the murder mystery of November 1910,
in the Old Opera House. Thanks for having patience with me.

Editors Note... Due
to the full week focusing on becoming a partner with my horses...
This weeks newsletter will be somewhat short. I haven't had much
time online. Next week I will have some photos of the my fantastic,
impacting, experience of learning to communicate; becoming a better
leader for my horse; and gaining the mutual respect that comes
with that partnership.
Old
Opera House Murder
As to the Old Opera House Murder
-- the final chapters will continue next week. I the withdrawal
symptons are not too bad. Thanks for your under-standing while
I take this break to expand my horizons and learn something new.
