Oakie's NW Corner...

This week in Oklahoma... The end of April and beginning of May came in hot, muggy with temps climbing to Summer type weather around the mid-90s to over 100 in the southern parts of the state. Thursday morning we did have a cool front come through and dropped the temps 25 degrees. So... It has been half way decent outside. I do NOT know if I am ready for Summer to take over quite yet, though.

I’ve been busy getting my newsletter ready for tonight to send out somewhere, sometime (on the road tonight) in Texas (Amarillo to be exact). For those of you who have gotten intrigued and hooked in the Old Opera House Murder, Chapter V is ready for viewing.

Besides writing on my newsletter and Murder Mystery this week, I’ve been gathering my clothes, cameras, horse equipment, saddle, pad, etc. that I’m going to take to a week long horse camp in Pagaosa Springs, Colorado (5th thru 12th may 2002).

Some of those items were a couple of journals (1 large, 1 pocket size ) to write in for Parelli's Level I Partnership training with your horse. I decided that instead of traveling, trailering my own horse 13 hours across statelines that it would be less stressful to just rent a horse at Parelli's Training Center for the week of May 5 thru 12, 2002.

I know this will be a great learning experience and another turning point in my life. Hopefully, with their permission, I can fill you in on what I learn during that week -- maybe some pictures, too.

Besides getting things organized for for my week at 'horse camp', my laptop has been going through some needed system updates, tuning-ups -- getting ready for its trip to SW Colorado.

Go-Whoa... I found out what a Go-Whoa was from one of my readers. Lois says, " It is a race where you use a vehicle with the baldest tires you can find and race to see who can start and stop the fastest." So... What do you think? You want to try that?

A Sunday Stroll in Downtown Alva... The 21st of April 2002 I took a Sunday stroll in sunny, downtown Alva (Oklahoma) with my digital camera to give you a view of what Sundays are like in this neck of the Woods (county) in Northwest Oklahoma. You can view some of the photos at Oakie's Webshots (Alva Downtown Square 2002).

Before I head out of here... Let me leave you all with an assignment! One of my webpage viewers left a message on OkieLegacy Messageboard with this question in mind -- "Why are Oklahoma's state colors green & white? What is their significance? Why were they chosen over the other colors?" I would also like to know the answer to this question. Can you help us out? Thanks!

NW Mystery Corner...

This is a brief summary of the case as it appeared in Renfrew's Record, dated 8 September 1911...

"Mabel Oakes left her home in the city (Alva, Okla.) about 10 o'clock a.m. to go downtown. As she did not return to dinner, her father, George Oakes, left home about one o'clock p.m., went down to look for Mabel. He first went to Justice N. L. Miller's office, in the old opera house, where Mabel had been employed as clerk by Miller for over a year, to see if she might not have stoped there, but the door was locked. Miss Oakes had quit Miller's employ some months before.

"Failing to find Mabel around the square, Mr. Oakes was returning, crossing the street south of Noel's Livery Barn, when Miller came out of his office and hailed him, asking him to come over there. Mr. Oakes went and Miller admitted him to the office, closing the door on a friend of Oakes', who was with him."

Mr. Oakes had made the rounds of the square looking for his daughter Mabel and was heading back towards the Old Opera House, crossing the street south of Noel's Livery Barn. Where was Noel's Livery Barn located? Was Noel's Livery Barn across the street and in same vicinity as the Old Opera House? it sounds like we are getting closer to the whereabouts of the Old Opera House. Is there anyone out there that can help us fill in some more pieces of this Old Opera House location puzzle? AND... Who was the other man that was with Mr. Oakes when they were hailed by Miller in front of Miller's office?

The Renfrew's Record, dated 8 Setpember 1911 also stated, "The defendant (N. L. Miller) filed a motion supported by affidavit that he was not ready for trial on account the absence of James Roller, who if here would testify that he saw N. L. Miller in front of Jackson's Cigar Store, getting election returns from 12:45p.m. to 1:45p.m. on the day of the murder."

Who was this James Roller that purported to be a witness to Miller's whereabouts between 12:45p.m. and 1:45p.m.? Where was Jackson's Cigar Store located in Alva, Oklahoma?

37 Years later, 115 Pilots Fly Over Himalayas Again

1980s article- Reunion of The Hump" WWII, Peking

Karel (from Tulsa, Okla.) shares this 1980s news article concerning the World War II "Hump" Pilots posing in front of Peking's forbidden city, during a reunion return to the city. The former pilots flew war supplies from Burma over the Himalayas during WWII. [Click on the article to view a larger version.]
Karel also mentioned that her dad flew the "Hump" during WWII. His last name was NICOLA and he was born and raised in Alva. He was only about 23 years old when he was flying the China-India-Burma theatre (The Hump). When you read what a treacherous place that was, it boggles the mind!
Did any of your fathers, brothers, friends, family members tell you any stories about the "Hump" during World War II?

Go-Whoa... "Linda, my daughter-in-law is from Carmen. When she gave me the Carmen centennial roster a couple of weeks ago , I asked her what a "Whoa and Go" was. She said she did not know, but would ask her parents who still reside in Carmen. It is a race where you use a vehicle with the baldest tires you can find and race to see who can start and stop the fastest. Sounds like a fun thing." -- Lois G.
Yuba city Hall of records, in 1909Hall of Records - Yuba City... "It is attached to the Courthouse. It is exactly as seen in the picture but it has been painted grey/white to match and blend in with the Courthouse. If you look at the picture, the present day Courthouse is attached to the left of the building." -- Lou W.
Great Newsletter... "Well, Linda, another wonderful newsletter. I just love reading the letters from your readers saying they too are hooked on the murder mystery. Told ya~!"
Parelli Horse Center... "The horse training class you are going to sounds very interesting! Anyway, just wanted to say I loved the link to the info on the class and hope you enjoy yourself tremendously (heck, just being in Colorado would be a wonderful thing right now.)"
Rationing Link... "I really loved the link to the ration site! Listened to Bing Crosby and all! So the little red token was Office of Price Adminstration, huh? Was amazed that some rationing in other countries was continued until 1955 and my husband told me something he had just found out that was very interesting (all be it gross) the Japanese did. As in the Bing Crosby info, they used rendered fat for explosives. Well, the Japanese collected URINE from citizens to make explosives because they couldn't get any nitrates (I think it was)! MERCY! What little we know about the world, huh?"
Mystery & Demurrer... "Okay, what is a Demurrer? Is it an objection? Just never seen or heard that term before. I loved the statement by the newspaper after saying the president of the college would not allow students to attend the trial without permission.... the part about 'and if the press of our city would refrain from publishing every dirty little detail......' That is Sooo funny! The readers take on the writings by the newspaper was very true. Articles were written in a more personal nature instead of cold and factual like today."
Parole Recalls Battle - Dalton and Doolin Gangs of Outlaws at Ingalls Killed Several Deputies... This news article came from the Alva Review Courier, dated 8 December 1910 by way of the a Guthrie, Okla., article dated Nov. 29, 1910... It was concerning an announcement -- "Governor Haskell had granted a parole to Tom Jones, who recalled to old timers in Oklahoma the memorable battle with the Dalton and Doolin gangs of outlaws at Ingalls in 1893, which resulted in the death of Deputy Marshals Dick Speed, Houston and Shadley."
Four Quarts of Whiskey, Five Gallons of Beer, only Permitted in Private Homes - 2 March, 1911, Alva Review Courier... Back in 1911 a new prohibition bill, containing but three sections and embodying only the most essential features of such a a law was introduced in the Senate by Senator J. H. Langston, of Guymon -- "The first section makes it unlawful for any person, association, club society, co-partnership or of company 'to manufacutre, sell, barter, give away, or otherwise furnish or dispose of any intoxicating liquor of any kind, including ale, beer, wine or any mixed drink, beverage or connection of an intoxicating character.' It is punishable by fine of $50 to $500 and imprisonment of 30 days to six months, together with disfranchisement for five years and disqualification for holding office..... An exemption of the sort which caused so much of a fight on the pending prohibition bill is contained in the third section, which provides that 'the provisions of the act shall not apply to the head of a family, who may keep not to exceed four quarts of whiskey or wine or five gallons of beer in his home for the use of the family for medical purposes.'"

When you get to the File #7, look on the last page, notice the circled name & address -- A Mrs. Nettie P. Self, 120 Barnes Ave., Alva, OK, phone No. 196 is circled. I do NOT know if this was a guest who signed ... OR... a possible location of the Rest Room. Do NOT think it was location, though. One of my friends thought that it was located closer to the downtown square where the Chamber of Commerce building is located now. I am still searching for the Rest Rooms location... With your help.

Demurrer... I went to ‘Lectric Law Library’s webpage and did a search on Demurrer. This is what I found… 'DEMURRER - From the Latin demorari or old French demorrer, to wait or stay. In pleading, imports that the objecting party will not proceed with the pleading, because no sufficient statement has been made on the other side; but will wait the judgment of the court whether he is bound to answer. Demurrers are no longer available in Federal and many state courts. In Federal Courts the equivalents are often various motions pursuant to F.R.Civ.P. Rule 14.'

Is Alva Improving? - 16 March 1911, Alva Review Courier... According to the 1911 news article -- "That is a question recently asked by a newcomer and easily answered by just looking over our city. A large force of men are at work on the $35,000 city hall. The new $10,000 German Lutheran church is being rapidly pushed to completion. Foundations for the new bricks on the north side are being put in. Finishing touches are being put on the Monfort building, preparatory to occupancy. A force of men are paving on Center Street. Barnes Avenue paving will be finished within the next few months. A $10,000 wholesale grocery house is to be erected at once. Besides this new residences are being erected in various parts of our city. 'Is Alva improving,' well yes, and just a little more rapidly than ever before."
