Go-Whoa... "Linda,
my daughter-in-law is from Carmen. When she gave me the Carmen centennial
roster a couple of weeks ago , I asked her what a "Whoa and Go"
was. She said she did not know, but would ask her parents who still
reside in Carmen. It is a race where you use a vehicle with the baldest
tires you can find and race to see who can start and stop the fastest.
Sounds like a fun thing." -- Lois G.
Hall
of Records - Yuba City... "It is attached to the Courthouse.
It is exactly as seen in the picture but it has been painted grey/white
to match and blend in with the Courthouse. If you look at the picture,
the present day Courthouse is attached to the left of the building."
-- Lou W.
Great Newsletter... "Well,
Linda, another wonderful newsletter. I just love reading the letters
from your readers saying they too are hooked on the murder mystery.
Told ya~!"
Parelli Horse Center... "The horse training
class you are going to sounds very interesting! Anyway, just wanted
to say I loved the link to the info on the class and hope you enjoy
yourself tremendously (heck, just being in Colorado would be a wonderful
thing right now.)"
Rationing Link... "I really loved the link
to the ration site! Listened to Bing Crosby and all! So the little
red token was Office of Price Adminstration, huh? Was amazed that
some rationing in other countries was continued until 1955 and my
husband told me something he had just found out that was very interesting
(all be it gross) the Japanese did. As in the Bing Crosby info, they
used rendered fat for explosives. Well, the Japanese collected URINE
from citizens to make explosives because they couldn't get any nitrates
(I think it was)! MERCY! What little we know about the world, huh?"
Mystery & Demurrer... "Okay, what is
a Demurrer? Is it an objection? Just never seen or heard that
term before. I loved the statement by the newspaper after saying the
president of the college would not allow students to attend the trial
without permission.... the part about 'and if the press of our city
would refrain from publishing every dirty little detail......' That
is Sooo funny! The readers take on the writings by the newspaper was
very true. Articles were written in a more personal nature instead
of cold and factual like today."

of Outlaws at Ingalls Killed Several Deputies... This news article
came from the Alva Review Courier, dated 8 December 1910 by way of
the a Guthrie, Okla., article dated Nov. 29, 1910... It was concerning

Tom Jones, who recalled to old timers in Oklahoma the memorable battle
with the Dalton and Doolin gangs of outlaws at Ingalls in 1893, which
resulted in the death of Deputy Marshals Dick Speed, Houston and Shadley."
Four
Quarts of Whiskey, Five Gallons of Beer,
only Permitted in Private Homes - 2 March, 1911, Alva Review Courier...
Back in 1911 a new prohibition bill, containing but three sections
and embodying only the most essential features of such a a law was
introduced in the Senate by Senator J. H. Langston, of Guymon -- "The
first section makes it unlawful for any person, association, club
society, co-partnership or of company 'to manufacutre, sell, barter,
give away, or otherwise furnish or dispose of any intoxicating liquor
of any kind, including ale, beer, wine or any mixed drink, beverage
or connection of an intoxicating character.' It is punishable
by fine of $50 to $500 and imprisonment of 30 days to six months,
together with disfranchisement for five years and disqualification
for holding office..... An exemption of the sort which caused so much
of a fight on the pending prohibition bill is contained in the third
section, which provides that 'the provisions of the act shall not
apply to the head of a family, who may keep not to exceed four quarts
of whiskey or wine or five gallons of beer in his home for the use
of the family for medical purposes.'"

These are the Links to the PDF files of Alva's 1909-1910
Rest Room Guestbook. When you get to the File #7, look on the
last page, notice the circled name & address -- A Mrs. Nettie
P. Self, 120 Barnes Ave., Alva, OK, phone No. 196 is circled. I do
NOT know if this was a guest who signed ... OR... a possible location
of the Rest Room. Do NOT think it was location, though. One of my
friends thought that it was located closer to the downtown square
where the Chamber of Commerce building is located now. I am still
searching for the Rest Rooms location... With your help.

Messageboard Post... Hey everyone I am a native 'Okie.'
My hubby and I are currently stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
I could use some help in finding some info... My mom is an educator
in Oklahoma and we are trying to locate some info about our state...
So here is the information we need... Why are Oklahoma's
state colors green and white -- What is their significance
-- Why were they chosen over the other colors? If you know
the answers to these questions or know of a link I can use to find
the answers please Email Kristy.
Thanks so much." -- Kristy
Demurrer... I
went to Lectric
Law Librarys webpage and did a search on Demurrer. This
is what I found
'DEMURRER - From the Latin demorari or old French
demorrer, to wait or stay. In pleading, imports that the objecting
party will not proceed with the pleading, because no sufficient statement
has been made on the other side; but will wait the judgment of the
court whether he is bound to answer. Demurrers are no longer available
in Federal and many state courts. In Federal Courts the equivalents
are often various motions pursuant to F.R.Civ.P. Rule 14.'

Is
Alva Improving? - 16 March 1911, Alva
Review Courier... According to the 1911 news article -- "That
is a question recently asked by a newcomer and easily answered by
just looking over our city. A large force of men are at work on the
$35,000 city hall. The new $10,000 German Lutheran church is being
rapidly pushed to completion. Foundations for the new bricks on the
north side are being put in. Finishing touches are being put on the
Monfort building, preparatory to occupancy. A force of men are paving
on Center Street. Barnes Avenue paving will be finished within the
next few months. A $10,000 wholesale grocery house is to be erected
at once. Besides this new residences are being erected in various
parts of our city. 'Is Alva improving,' well yes, and just
a little more rapidly than ever before."

Alva Rest Room Guestbook... I have re-scanned and scanned the
rest of the pages of the 1909-1910 Alva Rest Room Guestbook
that my grandmother Constance Warwick
McGill had saved in her memory box of family treasures. Some of
the pages were so light -- I hope these re-scanned PDF Files make
it easier viewing. See the Links for the seven (7) PDF (Adobe Acrobat
