13 Days...

Speaking of memory jogs.... Can you remember what and where you were in Mid-October 1962?

Last weekend my husband and I went to see the  movie , "13 Days." The movie concerns the weeks evolving around the "Cuba Missile Crisis." It got me thinking back to where we were at that particular time in mid-October 1962.

What were you doing back then?

I was a shy 9th grader at Alva Jr. High, in Alva, Oklahoma. I had other things on my mind besides politics and current affairs. I remember seeing headlines and hearing the newscasters talk about those times, but didn't really absorb or take it all in back then.

I ask my husband what, where he was during that time. He said he had just left on retreat for two weeks with his class at a California College with NO news from the outside world.

Can you remember what you were doing and any reactions you might have had back then?

Geary, Oklahoma Request...

This is a request from another reader. Vernon is searching for 1938 Alumni of the Geary High School, in Geary, Oklahoma, Blaine County.

His question, "Do you have any readers in the Geary area? Your Uncle Alvin and I both graduated from Geary High school. He (Alvin) in 1935 or 1936 and I (Vernon) in 1938. I would love to hear from anyone that went to school there around that time. There may not be much of a chance because most of them have probably passed on to a better world. Each time we go through Oklahoma we visit the Geary Cemetery. Many of my classmates and old neighbors are buried there."

If anyone has any information on 1935, '36 and '38 Geary High School Alumni, please contact Vernon.

Oakie's Column...

This week started out as a warm, soggy, foggy February Winter in Oklahoma.

I spent the first half of the week making muddy moments with my stud colt and friends.

I did get to spend some quality time with my stud colt (Okie Moon). Moon and the other colts sloshed through the muddy coral over to the fence looking for a friendly nuzzle under the chin and on the forehead. They were also looking and sniffing the horse apple treats that I had stuck in my coat pockets.  Treats don't hurt! ;-)

Okie Moon is doing fine!  In the near future I will have Moon's horse genealogy up at OkieLegacy.org under "Quarterhorses ." I have not began on that section yet... So keep watch and check it out later.

Thanks for letting me know how the new format of the E-Zine is coming through on your end. I really appreciate the feedback.

I would like to hear from some of you AOL and Compuserve readers out there so we can make sure you are receiving a readable copy, also.   If your email browser doesn't support HTML, then you can always read the latest Vol. Issue of OHTH at OkieLegacy.

Another reader was telling me about some more Post Offices and Grocery Stores in the NW part of Oklahoma.  I hope to have some of those stories for you later.

Have you ever heard of Coy and Lookout? Send me some information, photos and stories of the the ghost town post offices and grocery stores in your area.

"Linda, Where was I in October '62?... Assigned to the 550 Strategic Missile Squadron at Schilling AFB, Kansas. As a member of a five man launch crew for the Atlas F missile. We were receiving intelligence briefings before it became 'news!' Possibly two days before the blockade was made public, we all went on alert, such that all the personnel living in Salina were ordered back to the base and the base was placed on a high state of alert. All missile crews, B47 and KC135 crews, were on 24 hour alert. Where we usually worked a 24 hour shift at a missile site every third day, our schedule became 24 hour shift every other day, with 'training' on the 'off day!' All missiles, as well as aircraft, were readied for launch. There was a joke circulated, that since we were targeted in the Soviet Union and the problems were in Cuba, we didn't have anything that would hit that close! Probably the most memorable thing about that time is how isolated we began to feel due to our contact with such a limited number of people and lack of contact with 'the outside world.' One thing which was discussed, but don't recall any follow up information was a possible 'spike in the birthrate in July '63!'" Marvin, figment1@htg.net

"Hi Linda, I too was from that same town of Alva. I was in the Air Force in '62, at a big SAC base in Texas. Nothing scary. Just an X-Ray tech in a hospital. No chance of seeing action, so it didn't scare me as bad as some of the guys on the base. Thanks again for the nice news letter!" Steve, snicholson@earthlink.net

"The eagle came through, soaring beautifully into the sky. Thanks for having me on your e-mail list." Lanie

"I use outlook express and see the eagle just fine. I do like the format! Keep up the good work." Steve

"Looking for information on an Emmett Harley Cox last known where abouts in or around Woods County around 1930's. Married a Margaret D. Baxter in Alva,OK on April 27,1931. Had one son James D. born 3/25/1932. Emmett and Margaret divorced in December 1933. I have been looking for Emmett for over a year now and have very little to go on, would really appreciate any information that I could receive on him." Brenda, mixonbda@aol.com.

"There are a couple of Post office towns out in NW Woods County that have disappeared. They were not actually towns just PO and Groceries. One of them was Coy and the other Lookout. I think I have a picture of Coy. I don't have a picture of Lookout. Just a lot of memories. I was born about 3 miles from there. I know you have to draw the line somewhere or it can overwhelm you. I could name a lot more of these little stores come to think about it. I guess they were our C-stores in those days. I will keep my eyes open for a picture of Augusta." Marty, lookout@akslc.net
