Mother of Exiles...

Who was the Mother of Exiles? What do you know about the history of the Statue of Liberty?

My search on Google.com found some interesting information concerning this special Mother of Liberty (a.k.a. Mother of Exiles).

According to NPS historical Handbook: Statue of Liberty, the Statue of Liberty enlightening the World was a gift to the United States from the people of France, conceived and designed as a symbol of a great international friendship.

Historical Notes... Construction of the Statue began in France in the year 1875, by sculptor Auguste Bartholdi. The final completion date of the individual sections was in June of 1884, and it stood in Paris until it was dismantled in early 1885 for shipping to the US. Engineering of the structure's assembly was done by Gustave Eiffel.
The French frigate "Isere" transported the Statue from France to the United States. In transit the Statue was reduced to 350 individual pieces and packed in 214 crates. The pedestal was designed by architect Richard M.Hunt in 1877. Construction of the pedestal began in 1883 and was completed in 1884, and final assembly of the statue & pedestal was completed in 1886. On October 28, 1886 President Grover Cleveland accepted The Statue on behalf of the United States and said in part, "We will not forget that liberty here made her home -- nor shall her chosen altar be neglected."

The poet Emma Lazarus... saw refugees from persecution arriving on a tramp steamer. In 1883, she wrote that the statue was "The New Colossus" or the "Mother of Exiles."

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch whose flame
Is imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips.
"Give me your tired your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

by -- Emma Lazarus (1849-1887)

Symbolism of the statue... The broken shackles of tyranny that are molded at the feet of Liberty spoke to generations of people fleeing tyranny -- The tablet in the statue's left hand, inscribed July 4, 1776, refers to the Declaration of Independence (telling all comers of the American ideal that "all men are created equal.") -- The torch, held high in her right hand, lights the way to freedom and liberty.

We should remember... And take to heart what President Franklin D. Roosevelt said in 1936, at the 50th anniversary of the unveiling of the Statue of Liberty -- "Millions of men and women . . . adopted this homeland because in this land they found a home in which the things they most desired could be theirs -- Freedom of opportunity, Freedom of thought, Freedom to worship God. Here they found life because here there was Freedom to live. It is the memory of all these eager, seeking millions that makes this one of America's places of great romance . . . It is fitting, therefore, that this should be a service of rededication to the liberty and the peace which this statue symbolizes. Liberty and peace are living things. In each generation -- if they are to be maintained -- they must be guarded and vitalized anew."

Unique NW Oklahoma Holiday Gift Ideas...

Do you need a unique, historical gift for that special history buff or just some stocking stuffers for the Holidays?

2002 Collectors CalendarI mentioned in last weeks eZine about Waynoka Historical Society's 2002 Collectors Calendar that is On Sale now. Waynoka (Oklahoma) publishes a calendar each year featuring photos of Waynoka's unique history. The cover for 2002 is very appropriate, with a patriotic theme, "Sweet Land of Liberty". The circa 1918 photo shows a group of World War I Dough Boys assembled at the Waynoka Harvey House and Santa Fe Depot. A large crowd is there, probably to see the soldiers off to war. Steam engines, Transcontinental Air Transport groundbreaking in 1929, a balloon lift-off in 1906, Hess' Rodeo and Picnic - a three-day event in the Aline area at the turn of the century, camels at Little Sahara and other great pictures are featured.

ORDER your 2002 Gift Calendars... For MORE Info on ordering, Contact Sandie @ waynokahs@hotmail.com and the Waynoka Historical Society, PO Box 193, Waynoka OK 73860. Cost is $5, plus 9% tax for Oklahoma residents. Postage and handling is $2 for any number sent to the same address. The Society also has reprints of the 1906 Woods County Atlas for $30, plus 9% tax, and $5 for mailing.

Oakie's NW Corner...

Last Weekend Shockers... OSU beats OU (16-13) during the Annual Bedlam Football Series in Norman, Oklahoma last Saturday. OU may have underestimated the OSU Cowboys when they rode into town. OSU left at sundown with bragging rights to last Saturday afternoon's defeat of the OU Sooners.

Tuesday, Wednesday Cold Shocker... Many Oklahomans across the state felt the chill to the bone with cold, Winter storms leaving it's snowy, icy, chilly marks across the SW,Central, Southern, Northern and Eastern areas of Oklahoma. Some experienced snow while the other parts of the state felt the chill of the winds. One of my sources says, "Temps fell to 5-below in NW Oklahoma." Needless to say, this Okie (stuck in OKC during that time) got out her long-johns and built a cozy fire in the fireplace to keep warm .

Let's have a Drawing... I purchased a few of Waynoka's Historical 2002 Collector Calendars for stocking stuffers for the holidays. I have a couple of those Historical 2002 Calendars to give away. All you need to do to get your name in the drawing for next week is... Send Oakie an Email (along with your mailing address) before next Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, 7:00pm -- I will draw out two names and announce the winners in next weeks newsletter, (Vol. III, Iss. 49).

Essemar Horse Farms - Bar-O BrandEssemar Farms... Last week Essemar Horse Farm received it's registered freeze-brand and certificate from Oklahoma's Brand Division. It is a variation of a brand that my paternal Grandmother, Constance Estelle Warwick McGill, used back in her early pioneer farming, ranching days in Woods County, Oklahoma. My registered brand is Bar-O (Bar-Circle) on the Left-hip. My grandmother used the O-Bar (turn my brand upside down for grandma's brand.).

Colorado Winter Weather Report... A reader in Colorado gave fair warning of what was headed our way last weekend (Sunday). He emailed this weather report in last Sunday... "It's snowing like crazy here at the farm. There`s about 6-inches on the ground so far. It started saturday night about 10:00pm and is still coming down at noon on Sunday. The wind is blowing out of the south about 15-20 mph but the snow seems to be to wet to drift. It looks pretty neat with all the mountains and hills covered in white. Last night I noticed something moving in the front yard . I went to the window to look and saw 4 deer eating the green grass in the front yard. I've seen three of the deer before. There's a doe with twins that hangs out near the house. I see them almost every day. My dog likes to chase them now and then, but they keep coming back. Must be some tasty grass. I'ts been getting pretty cold at night but I`m not sure the exact temp."

Uncle Sam... What year did we started using or associating "Uncle Sam" with the U. S.? Who was this Sam Wilson, anyway? Another mystery to unravel, huh?
Nellie Louella Callaway... "Nellie Louella Callaway was living 417 NW 12 St, Alva, OK in 1936. Any leads appreciated re her parents, siblings, husband, children, death, etc. I'm trying to give her great-grandchildren information about their ancestry. She may have had a connection to Winifred Huff who was born in Capron, OK. Is anyone willing to look up Nellie Luella Callaway and Winifred Huff in the 1920 census from Woods Co., OK to learn what their parents names were? I'd really appreciate it. I'm in CA if I can be of any help to anyone. I'm trying to give her great-grandchildren some family history.Thanks." -- Sey, Stangsey@aol.com
David Chesley Garrison... "Hello, I am researching Chesley Garrison born 1807 in TN. He was in Hardin Co., TN 1840, 1850 in Tishomingo Co., MS and in Drew Co., AR 1860 for remainder of his life. Because of the name, I am wondering if you have any knowledge of anyone who may be researching the family of the David Chesley Garrison in your genealogy. My Chesley had a son namd Leroy David. Thank you." -- Janell McCann, mackiejm@prodigy.net
Magill/McGill Search & Share Newsletter... " Judy Magill Davis of Portland, OR was researching her Magill family out of Augusta Co. VA ca 1749 to Lincoln Co. KY by the 1780's. A number of us were trying to unravel the Magill branches, and began to circulate a package of resources among each other. This package grew until Judy created the newsletter 'MAGILL/McGILL Search and Share.'
In the process of this research Judy contacted the Historical Society of Stanford, KY in 1984, and a woman in that town shared information from her family Bible.
The Bible showed that William MAGILL was born 18 Nov 1750, and died 1 Nov. 1813. He married Jean (no last name shown) 1 Oct 1772. Seven children were listed for this couple: John 3 Aug 1773, Susannah 28 Dec 1774, William 27 Feb 1777, Mary 10 June 1779, Sally 28 Apr 1783, Samuel (page torn, date of birth missing), James 2 Mar 1787.
Much information in the Bible is difficult to read because of age, stains, and shattered edges. There were two pages recording births, one for MAGILL, one for DAUGHERTY; one page each for marriages and deaths. The DAUGHERTY page listed children of Charles and Hannah B. DAUGHERTY, possibly a second generation DAUGHERTY family. Curiously there are no MAGILL/DAUGHERTY marriages shown in the Bible, although two of the daughters of William and Jean MAGILL married DAUGHERTY men and the marriages are recorded in Lincoln County.
If any of these folks are your family, write me privately." -- Nona Nunnelly, nanunnelly@aol.com
