Waynoka Collectors Calendars for 2002...

Do you need a Great, Historical, Stocking Stuffer for the Holidays?.... Then you need to check the Waynoka Historical Society's Collectors 2002 Calendar that is on Sale now. Waynoka (Oklahoma) publishes a calendar each year featuring photos of Waynoka's unique history.

The cover for 2002 is very appropriate, with a patriotic theme, "Sweet Land of Liberty". The circa 1918 photo shows a group of World War I Dough Boys assembled at the Waynoka Harvey House and Santa Fe Depot. A large crowd is there, probably to see the soldiers off to war. Steam engines, Transcontinental Air Transport groundbreaking in 1929, a balloon lift-off in 1906, Hess' Rodeo and Picnic - a three-day event in the Aline area at the turn of the century, camels at Little Sahara and other great pictures are featured.

Calendars may be ordered from Waynoka Historical Society, PO Box 193, Waynoka OK 73860. Cost is $5, plus 9% tax for Oklahoma residents. Postage and handling is $2 for any number sent to the same address. The Society also has reprints of the 1906 Woods County Atlas for $30, plus 9% tax, and $5 for mailing. Oakie's NW Corner...

Besides being with family, friends and stuffing ourselves with a harvest feast fit for a King this Thanksgiving, Thursday, 22 November... Did anyone think back to 38 years ago, 22 November 1963... What, Where and How were you feeling? Where were you, 22 November 1963?

As a freshmen in high school, at Alva High, I was sitting in class just after lunch when they came in and broke the news to us that President John F. Kennedy had been shot, in Dallas, Texas. Like now, everyone seemed shocked and glued to the television news broadcasts. Was it to make sure it was not a dream and finding out it really happened?

As to the Plymouth Thanksgiving Story... Have you ever wondered what really went on at Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts? According to the "Plymouth Thanksgiving Story"... If it had not have been for the Algonkian Indians befriending and helping the starving Pilgrims and showing them how to survive, Would we be celebrating Thanksgiving today?

Let's Talk Turkeys.... I don't know turkey, but have you ever heard of making a bed of chunked up apples to lay the baking turkey on to help keep it moist? I tried that this year. It turned out great! I bought a small turkey breast and laid it on a mound of cut-up red delicious apples cause I heard it helped retain the moisture in the turkey meat. I placed my favorite seasonings underneath the skin. As the drippings from the turkey, apples and seasonings started to gather -- I used my little basting probe thingy -- gathered the apple, seasonings flavor from the bottom and drenched the bird's breast really good as it cooked. I'm eating turkey sandwiches today, tomorrow and into the future.

Other than that... this is the report from the Chief of Weaselskin Creek, Thanksgiving day, "EIGHT (8), OCHO (8), inches of snow accumulated on on the Westbank of Weaselskin Creek. It took me 2 hours to get my chores done, including digging out my waterhose. I also dug a hole and planted my snowman snow measurer that Annie gave me for my birthday. But, I had to use my handy dandy measuring stick to measure how much snow was still on the ground when I finally got outside. I put together my scrape-snow-off-the-high-roof tool that I ordered last spring. It worked well and I can get it all the way up on the roof where the new bedroom roof meets the old second floor roof."

Oklahoma's weather made a drastic change today from a sunny, mild day to overcasts, rain towards the evening. Weaselskin must be sending some of that Winter weather Oklahoma's way, huh?

If you hear a loud rumbling coming from down in Norman, Oklahoma, it's just the two Oklahoma college annual rivalry and bedlam footballgoing on this weekend. It happens every year. May the best College football team come out the victor. Which will it be.... OU or OSU?

This may be a bit brief this week, but you can check out some family recipes in the "Mailbag" section amongst other goodies. Have I left anything out? Oh, Yeah! Has (or Does) anyone out there have any photos of Carmen, Oklahoma's Memorial? One of my readers was asking. Thanks! Have a great Thanksgiving weekend. See Y'all next weekend

All I want for Christmas is.... A World of Peace, Understanding and Respect!

Update on Drumm Ranch... "Wayne (Guffy) says the Headquarters for the Drumm Ranch was near the Medicine River south and east of Burlington and Driftwood. It was just a half mile east of where the gas plant is now on Highway 11 and 58. The plant is on 3rd section north of the Salt Fork bridge. The old Drumm land is now owned by Ronald Myers of Alva. They moved the Drumm Ranch monument to the Mc Claflin pasture because of river flooding. It stands in a pasture on section 6-27-10, a mile south and two plus miles east of where it used to rest. Wayne knows quite a bit more, but talks too fast for me to document all of what he says. LOL " - Lois

[Editor's note: Does anyone have a picture of the Drumm Ranch monument and area?]

Thanksgiving Quiz & Plymouth Story... "The Real Plymouth Thanksgiving Story? You be the judge. Very interesting. When you are finished reading jump over to my Thanksgiving Quiz. Here is some interesting info and part of a speech by one of the descendants of the Wampanoags, in 1970, at the Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts 350th Anniversary celebration. You can find the link to The Plymouth Thanskgiving Story on my puzzle page, also.

"Today is a time of celebrating for you -- a time of looking back to the first days of white people in America. But it is not a time of celebrating for me. It is with a heavy heart that I look back upon what happened to my People. When the Pilgrims arrived, we, the Wampanoags, welcomed them with open arms, little knowing that it was the beginning of the end. That before 50 years were to pass, the Wampanoag would no longer be a tribe. That we and other Indians living near the settlers would be killed by their guns or dead from diseases that we caught from them. Let us always remember, the Indian is and was just as human as the white people. Although our way of life is almost gone, we, the Wampanoags, still walk the lands of Massachusetts. What has happened cannot be changed. But today we work toward a better America, a more Indian America where people and nature once again are important."

Corporation for National & Community Service (CNS)... A new look and new leadership. Vice President swears in New head of CNS. Look who is heading up Homeland security. Crabby Ol' Aunt Dip (C.O.A.D.)
Veggie & Chip Dip...

    2 (6 oz) can/pkg of crab meat.
2 (8 oz) pkgs of cream cheese
2-4 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
           (without seeds)
    1/4 tsp celery seed
    1/4 cup finely-chopped green pepper
    1/4 cup finely-chopped green onion
1/8 tbsp of ground white, red, green, black peppercorns
    2 tbsp finely-chopped parsly
    1/2 tsp Thyme
    2 tbsp horseradish
    pinch of salt to taste

Simmer and reduce the LIQUID from 2 (6 oz) cans of crab meat, then cool. Reserve the crab meat and add to the dip after all other ingredients have been well blended.
In another bowl... Soften and stir cream cheese until fluffy, adding 2-4 tsps of lemon juice and the cooled, reduce liquid. Mince green pepper and thinly slice green onions. Some Chefs might add at least one Tbsp of finely minced parsley. Either poultry seasoning or thyme could be used.
Some of our Chefs use Kraft's Creamy Prepared Horseradish, but other brands may be available that are just as good.
Add a shake or more to taste of Tony Chacere's Creole Seasoning (or Zatarain's or other good Creole seasoning) for red pepper spiciness. If you use this, taste before adding any salt (Some chefs use kosher salt). Either Old Bay or Bookbinder's Seafood Seasoning are good flavorings.
When all the cheese, liquids and seasonings are well blended, gently stir in the crab meat so that it doesn't all break up.
Cover and refrigerate at least an hour. Let it warm up toward room temperature before tasting to adjust all the flavors.

Helena (OK) Memorial... "Very nice, I will stop and check it out next time I'm back that way. Does anyone have some pic's from the Carmen Memorial?"
Selenite CrystalsSelenite Crystals... "You reader speaks of the Selenite crystals as follows in part: '....They are hour glass shaped Selenite Crystals and are dug out of the sand at the crystal dig area located 3 mile south of Cherokee...' I am enclosing a picture of Selenite crystals which were dug approximately 10 years ago. The crystals are being constantly formed and those you may dig next years may not even be in existence yet. They are formed in the mineral laden sands of the Great Salt plains lake area. I feel that the crystals would be water soluble. The area is beautiful and is also a protected migratory bird sanctuary." -- Ernest
Fire Fighters Day for Ed Geraghty... "I lost my Dad on September 11th. He was Chief Edward Geraghty, Battalion 9, New York City Fire Department. He lost his life with many other heroes that day, victims of the terrorists.
Firefighters from all over have come to the aid and rescue of the tragedy in New York and Washington, D.C. Many firefighters have lost their lives to save someone else's. The truth of the matter is, they do this every single day. They truly are heroes. I know many people feel helpless, especially those who live far from NYC and D.C.
We all want to do something, show our appreciation, our support. I think we can...
In honor of the bravery, courage and determination of American firefighters, there should be a day in our nation to celebrate and appreciate their hand work and never-ending passion for saving lives.
I think we should honor all those other heroes who still live today. Please join me.
Let's start a petition for a National Firefighters Day. Will you help make every September 11th --- 'National Firefighters Day'? Please join me!Thank you." -- Connor Geraghty, 14, Rockville Centre, NY - (I Love u DAD!!)

MWag's Old Fashioned Pie Crust... "Okay. Here is the status of the home made crust. I don't have a food processor nor microwave because of the lack of counter top space and how much I hate cleaning extra appliances. Funny thing. While making this crust, I remembered making my first pecan pie with Grandma at back in the mid 80's. I also found that my experience cutting butter in to graham cracker crumbs for my semi-famous 'Sex-in-a-Pan' help me create this without a food processor. This must be the way that they made it back when some chefs were young (just kidding).

MWag's Old Fashioned Pie Crust
Dedicated to Grandma Vada McGill

1 tsp of sea salt (or kosher salt)
1/4 cup (1-1/2 sticks) chilled, unsalted butter

Slowly combine (with fork or food processor): 1/4 cup iced water (no ice cubes). Roll in a ball and flatten. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 1 hour. Let Dough soften to room temperature. Roll on floured surface into a 13-inch round. Carefully place in 9-inch pie pan. Trim and shape dough around the edge. Wrap crust in foil to prevent burning. Freeze for 10 minutes."
