God Bless America... by Irving Berlin

Do you know these words to God Bless America?

"While the storm clouds gather far across the sea, Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free, Let us all be grateful for a land so fair, As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer...

God Bless America,
Land that I love.
Stand beside her, and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America,
My home sweet home."

Cherokee Celebrates Centennial ...

Cherokee Fireworks The local Cherokee paper reported thousands (2000 to 4000) siteseers helped this NW Oklahoma, Alfalfa County, community celebrate their 100th birthday bash held 19, 20, 21 October 2001.
Besides the fireworks, parade and other activities, I think the longhorn cattle drive from south part of town down the main street of Cherokee to the stockyard had to be one of my favorites. Somewhere in here I do have a shot of those long horned critters as they were amiably herded through downtown Cherokee, Oklahoma.

Oakie's NW Corner...

Cherokee Longhorn Drive thru Main St. of downtownThings have been hectic this week in NW Oklahoma. Cherokee, in NW Oklahoma had it's downtown streets filled to capacity for their 100th birthday celebration. I did get some movie pictures of the parade, cowboy poetry, Les Gilliam (Balladeer), the longhorn cattle drive and the fireworks Saturday evening. I've got some editing to do on it for later viewing. You can view the stills over at Oakie's Webshots under "Cherokee Centennial."

AND... I hope you don't get tired of seeing, hearing and me bragging about the progress of my horses (Moon & Cassie).

Black Moon GeldingThis Black Beauty to the left is my two year old gelding that I call "Moon." He is in the process of being broken and ridden regular every week. The trainer informs me that possibly in a couple of weeks this Oakie may be able to ride this "Midnight Black Moon." I may have to change his name to "Blackie," though. Over the last year he has made many changes in his coat and coloring.

As to my 2001 Filly... Classy Cassie is in the process of being weaned from her mother. Besides that... All she seems to be singing and wishing for Christmas is... "Her two front teeth!"

2001 Filly, Classy CassieToothless Cassie in the foreground to the right bit down on something hard this last Wednesday and had to have her upper baby teeth pulled the next day, Thursday. DARN! AND... NO one saved the baby teeth for me. I was thinking of putting them under her horse pillow or in her horse-baby book. Do horses have tooth fairies? Anyway... Cassie is well! She is recovering nicely back at the horse farm with her playmates after being weaned from her mother.

Have I left out anything? I know I surely have. I would like to thank Eric from Charlotte, North Carolina for sending me the panorama photo of the 101 Ranch last week. Thanks, Eric!

I'm going to try to cut it short here for this week and leave you with the following... Carmen's Odd Fellows Orphanage? -- and -- Do NOT Forget to set your clocks back to Standard Time this weekend sometime between Saturday & Sunday!

One More Thing... Will OU's Big Red rack havock when they meet for their annual football rumble with Nebraska this weekend in Nebraska?

Have a safe HALLOWEEN,
Oct. 31st, Wednesday!!!

HAPPY 31st BIRTHDAY, to our oldest son, Michael Wagner - born October 26, 1970, Alva, Oklahoma!
Cherokee, OK WWII Veterans This is a photo of 26 some WWII Veterans that rode and walked in Cherokee's Centennail Parade last Saturday (20 October 2001). Lloyd Henderson and Ben Patton walked close by wearing their original uniforms. As I get more time I will add more webshots of the "Cherokee Centennia" on Oakie's Webshots.
101 Ranch... "You did such a swell job on the research! And believe me, I had no idea what it was all about. I bet many of your readers in Oklahoma never knew about their Hollywood roots. I loved it when the guy who wrote the Smithsonian review said, 'As the Millers transmute history into showbiz. . .No amount of truth will ever deflate the Old West. Its fables are too integral to the American self-image to be gunned down by the introduction of mere facts.'"

Greenwood's - "God Bless the USA"
If tomorrow all the things were gone
I'd worked for all my life
And I had to start again
With just my children and my wife
I'd thank my lucky stars
To be living here today
Cause the flag still stands for freedom
And they can't take that away
And I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
But I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I gladly stand up
Next to you
And defend her still today
Cause there ain't no doubt
I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.

From the lakes of Minnesota
To the hills of Tennessee
Across the plains of Texas
From sea to shining sea
From Detroit down to Houston
And New York to L.A.
There's pride in every American heart
And it's time we stand and say

And I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I gladly stand up
Next to you
And defend her still today
Cause there ain't no doubt
I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.
And I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I gladly stand up
Next to you
And defend her still today
Cause there ain't no doubt
I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.

Stella Friends Academy (SFA)...
.
Stella Academy Pupils, 1904
I've had a request for info on the Stella Academy in Northwest Oklahoma school. I have gathered the info I have on this school with any pictures I have and stuck in it in the Alfalfa County Section, at Okie Legacy, under Stella Friends Academy.

Request for the SFA info... "I wonder if you have any knowledge about the Stella Acadamy? It was located on State Hwy. 11, East of the junction about 3-4 miles. My mother mentioned it, but it was no longer there, when I was quite small -- 1930's. I was under the impression that it was a outstanding place of higher education."

Bakers Depart. Store...
Cherokee, OK - Baker Dept. Store[This is a night view shot taken off of my camcorder using the nightshot function, 20 October 2001, Saturday.]

One of my readers sent me the following information concerning what he remembers of the Baker Department Store in Downtown Cherokee, Oklahoma --

"I remembered that C.H.Baker, owner of Baker's Department Store, in Cherokee, once worked for the 101 Ranch. He is now listed in the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, in Oklahoma City. He also owned a ranch out near the Fish Hatchery (near Byron, Oklahoma). It was called the T-Bone Ranch."

Conover Inquiry... "Hi! I wondering if my great-grandfather Irvin Nicholas Conover (born Feb 19, 1860, died 1947 in Farnam, NE) fits in with the Conovers listed on your site. He was the son of Cornelius T. and Mary L. Williams from somewhere in New Jersey. His siblings were: Samuel K. born in 1856, John C. 1865 , William Nelson about 1872, Julia 1858. Any information you could share would be appreciated." -- Cynthia Peterson
